Role of the tear film in the optical quality of the human eye.

This paper reviews recent studies of the role of the tear film in the optical quality of the eye. Recent investigations focus on the dynamics of the tear film after a blink and its important role in the optical quality of the eye. The results in this review were used in an attempt to understand the optical and visual impact of tear-film breakup in normal eyes and dry eyes. It was noted that patients with dry-eye syndrome have large optical aberrations compared with those in normal eyes, which may be the cause of blurry vision associated with the syndrome. Intravascular ultrasound is a new diagnostic modality which, for the first time, provides high resolution images of the vessel wall. 91 intraluminal ultrasound studies were performed in 50 patients during the course of 55 diagnostic and therapeutic catheterizations. A F-6 ultrasound catheter (20 MHz) was used. The method is an easily and rapidly performed addition to angiography. Changes in vessel walls (arteriosclerosis, dissection, tumour infiltration) can be readily diagnosed and their extent can be accurately described. The ability to determine luminal cross sectional area is particularly helpful for planning and performing therapeutic interventions.

Graft rinse prior reperfusion in liver transplantation (LT) is believed to reduce the incidence of postreperfusion syndrome and improve clinical outcome. A MEDLINE search was performed to obtain a comprehensive review of the published literature dealing with graft rinse in LT. Moreover, all thirty-four LT centers in the Eurotransplant (ET) region were invited to participate in an online survey to whether or not graft rinse is performed and whether further research in the field is needed.
