Millaista demokratiaa? : diskurssianalyysi tavoitellun kuntaliitoksen (Oulainen-Vihanti) keskusteluista vuosina 2011-2014

2014

Demokratian kehitys on huolestuttanut suomalaisia pitkään.

John Dewey’s notion of social intelligence

2019

This chapter focuses on Deweyan understanding of intelligence as fundamentally social. This understanding differs from the common conceptions of intelligence as a feature of an isolated individual and/or as a possession of an elite. Starting with a look at the relevance of reconceptualizing intelligence, the chapter continues by describing how, according to Dewey’s theory, intelligence forms, manifests and cumulates in interactions. It then discusses the presumable implications of Dewey’s theory in terms of the contextuality of intelligent action, the importance of taking relevant experience-based information into account, the use of a particular method of inquiry, and modification of educa…

How do early family systems predict emotion recognition in middle childhood?

2021

Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a fundamental element in human interaction. It begins to develop soon after birth and is important in achieving developmental tasks of middle childhood, such as developing mutual friendships and acquiring social rules of peer groups. Despite its importance, FER research during middle childhood continues to be rather limited. Moreover, research is ambiguous on how the quality of one's early social-emotional environment shapes FER development, and longitudinal studies spanning from infancy to later development are scarce. In this study, we examine how the cohesive, authoritarian, disengaged and enmeshed family system types, assessed during pregnancy and inf…

Scaffolding patterns of dialogic exchange in toddler classrooms

2021

The present study investigates how often episodes of dialogic exchange can be identified in educator–toddler interactions during play and emerging academic activities, what kind of scaffolding strategies educators use during the episodes of dialogic exchange and, ultimately, what kind of scaffolding patterns of dialogic exchange can be identified based on educators' use of scaffolding strategies. Educator–child interactions were video-recorded in seven European countries, in two toddler classrooms in each country. The video recordings of emerging academic and play activities were transcribed and analysed, combining the principles of theory and a data-driven content analysis. First, 69 episo…

Moral beings and becomings : children's moral practices in classroom peer interaction

2016

This study investigates children’s social and moral practices as they appear in everyday classroom peer interaction. Its focus is on the relations between children’s interaction and moral understandings in situ. Juxtaposing the most archetypal ways of addressing and investigating morality in mainstream educational psychology, this study approaches morality is as it handled and man- aged as part of everyday intersubjective interaction. Ethnomethodological approaches alongside with sociocultural views of thinking are employed as theoretical and analytical frameworks to delineate how children as moral agents use language and other semiotic resources to accomplish their local organization of mo…

Analyzing multidimensional movement interaction with generalized cross-wavelet transform

2021

Humans are able to synchronize with musical events whilst coordinating their movements with others. Interpersonal entrainment phenomena, such as dance, involve multiple body parts and movement directions. Along with being multidimensional, dance movement interaction is plurifrequential, since it can occur at different frequencies simultaneously. Moreover, it is prone to nonstationarity, due to, for instance, displacements around the dance floor. Various methodological approaches have been adopted for the study of human entrainment, but only spectrogram-based techniques allow for an integral analysis thereof. This article proposes an alternative approach based upon the cross-wavelet transfor…

Entrepreneurial choices depend on trust : Some global evidence

2022

Interpersonal trust and people’s trust in institutions are important components of social capital, which has been shown to have not only innate social value but also diverse direct and indirect positive social and economic impacts. Using data for an economically and globally diverse group of countries, we examine empirically how changes in interpersonal trust and trust in institutions affect entrepreneurship over time. Our findings suggest that (1) enhancing either type of trust leads to more entrepreneurial activity and (2) an increase in interpersonal trust causes a structural change in the composition of the TEA-type entrepreneurship. Increased trust reduces the share of relatively lower…

Information Technology–Supported value Co-Creation and Co-Destruction via social interaction and resource integration in service systems

2022

The paper develops a conceptual framework to study the constructs of information technology (IT)-supported value co-creation and co-destruction through shared processes of social interaction and resource integration as mediated by IT and embedded in interactive value formation practices. In particular, the elements of social interaction and resource integration are identified, and the role of IT is discussed. We conduct a systematic literature review and analyze the data using the service system perspective. Our research contributes by identifying the constructs of value-creating phenomena enabled by IT from the service system perspective and presenting a research agenda for further studies…
