Finite element simulation of diffusion into polycrystalline materials

Diffusion in polycrystalline materials is investigated by means of numerical finite element simulations for constant source conditions. The grain boundaries are assumed to provide fast diffusion paths. Main emphasis is put on situations that typically occur for nanocrystals, viz. on situations in which (i) the diffusion length is significant compared with grain size, (ii) the influence of boundaries that are parallel to the surface become important in addition to the perpendicular ones. Furthermore, we treat the influence of blocking space charge layers sandwiching the core pathways and thus channeling grain boundary diffusion.
Dielectric relaxation of space charges and polarons in ferroelectric perovskites

Abstract In all ferroelectric perovskites, intentionally introduced or “unwanted” point defects do play a role in the dielectric spectra and in the conductivity. Above room temperature, space charge relaxation at the electrodes interfaces are observed. This can be of interest in the context of the nowadays applications of ferroelectric thin films. At liquid helium temperatures much more localised dielectric relaxation occurs. Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are promising lighting devices in which the redistribution of ionic charges allows for double electronic carrier injection from air-stable electrodes. Uncertainties about the mode of operation are limiting the progress of these devices. Using fast (with respect to the current growth time) but resolutive electrical measurement techniques, the electronic transport mechanism in state-of-the-art sandwiched devices can be monitored as a function of the operation time. Ionic Space-Charge Effects in Solid State Organic Photovoltaics

The effect of mobile ions on the operation of donor-acceptor bilayer solar cells is studied. We demonstrate the large effect ions can have on the energetics of the solar cells, illustrated by (for instance) changing the output voltage of a cell in situ from 0.35 to 0.74 V. More importantly, it is shown ionic species do not obstruct the charge generating properties of the photovoltaic devices and ionic space charge can be used in situ to improve their efficiencies. Space charge limited current mechanism in Bi2S3 nanowires

We report on the charge transport properties of individual Bi2S3 nanowires grown within the pores of anodized aluminum oxide templates. The mean pore diameter was 80 nm. Space charge limited current is the dominating conduction mechanism at temperatures below 160 K. Characteristic parameters of nanowires, such as trap concentration and trap characteristic energy, were estimated from current-voltage characteristics at several temperatures.

The understanding of spin injection and transport in organic spintronic devices is still incomplete, with some experiments showing magnetoresistance and others not detecting it. We have investigated the transport properties of a large number of tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum-based organic spintronic devices with an electrical resistance greater than 5 MΩ that did not show magnetoresistance. Their transport properties could be described satisfactorily by known models for organic semiconductors. The strain response of piezoelectric multilayer actuators under combined action of electric field and in-plane uniform load

Abstract The driving field governed strain of lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric multilayer actuators have been made within the 107 N/m2 stress and the 3 · 106 V/m triangle-like upward-down-ward driving voltage. A slow strain component as well as a specific relaxation pattern are detected being additional to the periodic part and attributed to the trapped space charge effects favored by nonuniform electric field of the multilayer.
Review of acoustic methods for space charge measurement

In the last decade, due to the increased use of direct current, the space charge accumulation phenomenon has reached more interest. In this regard, several non-destructive measurement systems were used. In particular, for solid dielectrics, the acoustic methods have had greater success. This review presents a brief historical evolution of the Pulse Electro- Acoustic (PEA) method, describing the working operation, the thicknesses analyzed and the spatial resolution for the different configurations of the PEA cell. The Pressure Wave Propagation (PWP) method in both configurations Piezo-PWP and Laser Induced Pressure Pulse (LIPP) is also described.
