First-principles study of bulk and surface oxygen vacancies in SrTiO3 crystal

The structural and electronic properties of the neutral and positively charged oxygen vacancies (F and F + centres) in the bulk and on the (001) surfaces of SrTiO3 crystal are examined within the hybrid Hartree-Fock and density functional theory (HF-DFT) method based upon the linear combination of atomic orbital (LCAO) approach. A comparison of the formation energy for surface and bulk defects indicates a perceptible propensity for the segregation of neutral and charged vacancies to both SrO and TiO2 surface terminations with a preference in the latter case which is important for interpretation of space charge effects at ceramic interfaces. Origin of the substrate current after soft-breakdown in thin oxide n-MOSFETs

In this paper is presented an experimental investigation on the origin of the substrate current after soft-breakdown in n-MOSFETs with 4.5 nm-thick oxide. At lower voltages this current shows a plateau that can be explained with the generation of hole-electron pairs in the space charge region and at the Si-SiO2 interface, and to carrier diffusion between the channel and the substrate. At higher voltages the substrate current steeply increases with voltage, due to trap-assisted tunneling from the substrate valence band to the gate conduction band, which becomes possible for gate voltages higher than the threshold voltage. Abstract Phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes are perspective in lighting technologies due to high efficient electroluminescence. Not only phosphorescent dyes but also host materials are important aspect to be considered in the devices where they are a problem for blue light emitting phosphorescent molecules. Transparent amorphous memory cell: A bipolar resistive switching in ZnO/Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3/ITO for invisible electronics application

Abstract ZnO/Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (ZnO/PCMO) amorphous thin films were grown on an indium-tin-oxide (ITO)/glass by pulsed laser deposition at room temperature. Interestingly, a stable bipolar resistive switching behavior of the ITO/ZnO/PCMO/ITO cell can be longer than 2.5 × 103 cycles. The on/off ratio of switching behaviors is as high as 104. The structure of ITO/ZnO/PCMO/ITO exhibits a high average transparency of 79.6% in the visible range with a maximum transparency of 84.6% at 590 nm wavelength. The conductive mechanism during switching cycling in our structure can be described by a trapped-control space charge limited current behavior. Controlling the dynamic behavior of light emitting electrochemical cells

Abstract Light emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) present an attractive route towards cost efficient lighting applications. By utilizing ionic phosphorescent transition metal complexes, efficient electroluminescence can be realized from a single layer device using air stable electrodes. These devices achieve efficient charge carrier injection due to ion accumulation at the interface upon driving, resulting in a dynamic response upon device operation. How does a transition zone affect the electric field enhanced water dissociation in bipolar membranes?

The changes in the electric field in the space charge regions and the corresponding effect on the water dissociation rate when a transition zone exists between the layers of a bipolar membrane are theoretically studied. A quasi-equilibrium approach based on the Poisson-Boltzmann equation for the space charge interfacial regions is used. The transition zone acts to decrease significantly the water dissociation rate. However, for realistic values of the thickness δ of the transition zone and provided that the ohmic drop over δ be small, this decrease in the dissociation rate is not very dependent on δ. The results obtained give theoretical support to some recent experimental findings.

Electric field-assisted proton transfer and water dissociation at the junction of a fixed-charge bipolar membrane

Abstract Electric field-enhanced (EFE) water dissociation can occur at the interfacial space charge junction of both biological and synthetic fixed-charge bipolar membranes. This dissociation has so far been analysed on an electrochemical basis using modified second Wien effect and absolute rate theories. We propose a statistical thermodynamics model to describe the cooperative orientation of the water molecules by the electric field at the bipolar junction. Enhanced prediction of multipaction breakdown in passive waveguide components including space charge effects

An enhanced prediction software tool of multipaction breakdown effect in passive waveguide components is proposed in this work. For such purpose, the space charge field effects are included employing a particle-in-cell code and finite differences in time domain integration techniques. As a result, the novel prediction tool models all the physical effects derived from multipactor such as reflected power, noise and/or harmonics, thus improving the accuracy of the threshold predictions and providing very valuable additional information of the phenomena. Multipactor Discharges in Parallel-Plate Dielectric-Loaded Waveguides Including Space-Charge Effects

[EN] The objective of this paper is to study the time evolution of multipactor discharges in a parallel-plate dielectric-loaded waveguide. The electron discharge phenomena investigated in this paper include the effects of space charge, as well as the presence of time varying static fields. In order to perform the simulations presented in this paper, an approach considering simultaneously multiple effective electrons has been used. The results obtained demonstrate that multipactor discharges do turn off by themselves under certain circumstances when they occur in such dielectric-loaded structures.

Electric strength, space charge and surface discharge characterization of nanostructured epoxy-silicate insulating materials

A set of surface discharge ageing procedures, space charge observations and dielectric strength measurements has been implemented on a type of insulating nanofilled epoxy-resin (nanostructured by compatibilised synthetic layered silicates) and on its non-filled base resin. Promising improvements in the electrical behaviour of the nanofilled epoxy, particularly as concerns surface discharge endurance, were detected. Regarding space charge, it was found that its accumulation rate as a function of ageing time is lower for the nanostructured resin. Finally, the nanofilled material evidenced a highly homogeneous behaviour of the dielectric strength data distribution.
