Quand le nom fait l’hérétique. Les mots de l’illuminisme castillan de 1525
2018
This article offers a short analysis of the different meanings and connotations of the three names given in 1525 by Toledo's Holy Office to the new Cas lian here cs-the « alumbrados », also called « dexados » and « perfects ». In order to be exhaustive, this taxinomic study of Castilian illuminism adds the name « recogidos » to this list, since those spirituals are often mentioned in the testimonies included in the trials. The comparison between the inquisitorial documents-the Toledo Edict, the minutes of the trials-and the pleas of the accused, along with some of the main contemporary spiritual books, reveals the discrepancy between the way the alumbrados called themselves and the name the…
Factor Structure and Measurement Invariance of the Spanish Burnout Inventory Among Professionals Across 17 Countries and Regions
2022
AbstractStudies on the prevalence of burnout in professionals in service organizations who work in direct contact with the clients or users of the organization have concluded that burnout is a serious health disorder that has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A significant advantage of the Spanish Burnout Inventory (SBI) over other instruments is that it provides a broader conceptualization of burnout by including feelings of guilt as a dimension of burnout to explain its development. However, the measurement invariance of the SBI across countries has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to test the measurement invariance of the SBI among professionals across 17 countr…
La alegoría de la ii República Española en el Guernica de Picasso
2018
In 1937, Pablo Picasso was chosen by the Republican Gov-ernment to be the artistic representative in the Spanish pavilion at the International Exhibition in Paris. The subject of the work was to be a denunciation of the Spanish Civil War. Picasso took his inspiration from the Guernica Tragedy, and the result was what is undoubtedly one of the most universally renowned paintings of the 20th century. As the artist never offered an interpretation of the painting, historians have since made an enormous variety of hypotheses. One of them suggests that the female figure carrying an oil lamp is the personification of the Republic.
Tres artistas en el exilio: Max Aub, Félix Candela y Josep Renau
2020
Three artists in exile focuses on the historical diaspora provoked by the Spanish civil war (1936- 1939), and how it influenced three prominent figures of the cultural scene of that period: the writer and typographer Max Aub Mohrenwitz (Paris, 1903-Ciudad de Mexico, 1972); the architect Félix Candela Outeriño (Madrid, 1910-Raleigh, US, 1977); and the artist Josep Renau Berenguer (Valencia, 1907-Berlín, 1982). They are the three protagonists of this article, who were simultaneously living in Mexico during the exile and who made notable contributions in the fields of arts and humanities (Max Aub), architecture (Félix Candela), and graphic design and photomontage (Josep Renau). While they were…
L’esperienza spagnola, dal terrorismo interno alla minaccia globale. Strumenti di difesa di una democrazia banco di prova
2017
The Spanish System represents a minor reality in a context in which Western European Democracies have opted to exclude from their Constitutions the preventive provision of the so‐called state of emergency and the specific case of terrorism. After all, the events that affected Spain are well‐known. Since many years, Spain has been active in the conflict against the Basque Terrorism and the democratic dilemmas, because of the presence in the Parliament of parties linked to the terrorist group Eta. And exactly the well‐known Ley organic sobre los partidos políticos 6/2002, which outlawed the Batasuna Party and other political organizations connected to the Eta group. Therefore, in the Spanish …

On subjective (and intensifier) I think (that) in parliamentary debate sessions
2018
This paper presents a behavioral analysis of the doxastic form creo (que) as a subjectification modal verb, specifically in its manifestation as a pragmatic intensifier device in a Spanish parliamentary debate. Previous work on creo (que) has suggested that it is indeed an intensifier (Fuentes 2010, Brenes 2015, Cuenca 2015), although many pragmatic approaches to these doxastic verbal forms, not only in the context of Spanish (Hennemann 2012; Albelda, Briz, Cestero, Kotwica y Villalba 2014) but also from other languages (Lakoff 1972; Hooper 1975; Lysvag 1975; Fraser 1975, 1980; Holmes 1984; Caffi 1999, 2004), have classified creo (que) as a marker of attenuation. The goal of this investigat…
Aproximadores y atenuadores en el español de Chile: el caso de 'como' y 'como que'
2019
This article analyses the use of the approximators como and como que in Chilean Spanish, and the link between their approximative semantic value and pragmatic mitigation. Previous works have given the marker como an approximative value (Mihatsch, 2009, 2010; Jørgensen and Stenstrøm 2009; Jørgensen, 2011; Holmvik, 2011; Kornfeld, 2013; Kern, 2014; Jiménez and Flores-Ferrán, 2018), and also a mitigating one (Puga, 1997; Briz, 1998; Jørgensen, 2011; Holmvik, 2011; Kornfeld, 2013, Panussis, 2016; Mondaca, 2017; Panussis and San Martín, 2017). Thus, the objective here is to analyze the relationship between semantic approximation and pragmatic mitigation through these particles, in order to estab…
The genotypes and virulence attributes of C. albicans isolates from oral leukoplakia
2021
Background There is a debate as to whether some types of oral leucoplakias (OL) are caused by Candida species, and whether they contribute to the malignant transformation, associated with a minority of such lesions. As no detailed population analysis of yeast isolates from OL is available, we evaluated the virulence attributes, and genotypes of 35 C. albicans from OL, and compared their genotypes with 18 oral isolates from healthy individuals. Material and Methods The virulence traits evaluated were esterase, phospholipase, proteinase, haemolysin and coagulase production, and phenotypic switching activity, and yeast adherence and biofilm formation. DNA from OL and control yeasts were evalua…
