Comparison of isotope ratio mass spectrometry and nondispersive isotope-selective infrared spectroscopy for 13C-urea breath test.

The 13C-urea breath test (UBT) is a sensitive and noninvasive method to diagnose Helicobacter pylori infection, but mass spectrometry (IRMS) is very expensive. The aims of this study were to compare the new low-priced infrared spectroscopy with IRMS in detecting the infection and to assess the influence of feeding on test accuracy.One hundred thirty-four patients with dyspeptic symptoms were recruited. Of these, 74 were infected and 60 uninfected on the basis of both CLO-test and histology. This study compares sonographical, histopathological, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and electromyographical (EMG) findings following acute muscle denervation. We performed an experimental denervation of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles on 35 New Zealand white rabbits by segment resection of the suprascapular nerve. The sonographical appearance of the supraspinatus muscle was followed and documented at short time intervals within a 2-month follow-up period. The sonographical, histopathological, and MRI changes due to denervation suggest a regular pattern. Experimental autoimmune hepatitis: Disease induction, time course and t-cell reactivity

This study describes a murine model of autoimmune hepatitis: experimental autoimmune hepatitis. Experimental autoimmune hepatitis could be induced most effectively in male C57BL/6 mice by intraperitoneal immunization with the 100,000 g supernatant of syngeneic liver homogenate (S-100) in complete Freund's adjuvant. BALB/C and C3H mice were less susceptible than C57BL/6 mice. Experimental autoimmune hepatitis could not be induced in Lewis rats. Intraperitoneal immunization was more effective than intramuscular or subcutaneous injections, and the amount of protein administered above a threshold was of little influence. NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) is commonly used as a histochemical marker for the neuronal form of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). A recent biochemical study showed that in broken-cell preparations NADPH-d activity did not fully represent NOS and that NOS-unrelated NADPH-d activity was suppressed during fixation. Objective— Many gene products involved in oxidation and inflammation are implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We investigated paraoxonase 2 (PON2), 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), and 5-LO activating protein (FLAP) expression and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in carotid lesions to assess their involvement in plaque formation. Objective To evaluate the efficacy of combined pulse oximetry (POX) and perfusion index (PI) neonatal screening for severe congenital heart defects (sCHD) and assess different impacts of screening in tertiary and nontertiary hospitals. Study design A multicenter, prospective study in 10 tertiary and 6 nontertiary maternity hospitals. Sequence variation in couch potato and its effects on life-history traits in a northern malt fly, Drosophila montana

Abstract Couch potato ( cpo ) has previously been connected to reproductive diapause in several insect species including Drosophila melanogaster , where it has been suggested to provide a link between the insulin signalling pathway and the hormonal control of diapause. In the first part of the study we sequenced nearly 3.6 kb of this gene in a northern Drosophila species ( Drosophila montana ) with a robust photoperiodically determined diapause and found several types of polymorphisms along the sequenced area.
