Herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been associated with various neurological disorders. In contrast, HSV infection is very rarely found in acute polyneuroradiculitis. In this report, a patient is described with a severe course of Guillain-Barr¿ syndrome (GBS). HSV IgM-specific antibodies and a rise of complement-fixation antibodies were detected. During the acute phase of neurologic syndrome, a nerve biopsy showed myelin damage and IgM deposits on the inner layer of the perineurium. Plasma exchange, in combination with immunosuppression, was successfully applied as a treatment in the relapsing course of GBS. Finally, after recovery, HSV-specific IgM antibodies disappeared.

Infection of murine hepatocyte cultures by herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 and 2

A study was undertaken of the interaction between liver cells and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) in vitro. Hepatocytes were obtained from HSV-resistant (C57/B16) and from HSV-susceptible (BALB/c, A/J, C3H) mouse strains and cultured according to standard methods. Each culture was infected with several strains of HSV-type 1 or of HSV-type 2, respectively. The multiplicity of infection was 5. After experimental treatment of rats with clofibrate or ciprofibrate, two peroxisomes proliferators with hypolipidemic activity, RNAs were prepared from liver, kidney, heart and brain; hybridization was done with DNA probes for c-myc and c-Ha-ras oncogenes and for cyanide insensitive Acyl CoA oxidase, a peroxisomal protein. c-myc mRNA is highly abundant in liver and at a lower extent in kidney, especially after treatment with ciprofibrate; clofibrate also allows a c-myc mRNA increase, but at a lower extent. c-Ha-ras, which is already expressed in all tested tissues from control animals, is stimulated by clofibrate and ciprofibrate treatments. Real-world sounds like speech or traffic noise typically exhibit spectro-temporal variability because the energy in different spectral regions evolves differently as a sound unfolds in time. However, it is currently not well understood how the energy in different spectral and temporal portions contributes to loudness. The most potent of these, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-rho-dioxin (TCDD), is highly lipophilic, leading to bioaccumulation. White adipose tissue (WAT) is a major site for energy storage, and is one of the organs in which TCDD accumulates. Pharmacologic pupil dilation as a predictive test for the risk for intraoperative floppy-iris syndrome.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of α1-adrenergic receptor antagonists (α1-ARAs) on pupil diameter and determine whether the diameter predicts intraoperative floppy-iris syndrome (IFIS). SETTING: Ophthalmology Section, Palermo University, Palermo, Italy. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: Male outpatients taking tamsulosin, α(1)-ARAs, or no α(1)-ARAs having phacoemulsification were recruited.
