Deep diving mammals have developed strategies to cope with limited oxygen availability when submerged. These adaptations are associated with an increased neuronal hypoxia tolerance. Brain neurons of the hooded seal Cysto- phora cristata remain much longer active in hypoxic condi- tions than those of mice. To understand the cellular basis of neuronal hypoxia tolerance, we studied neuroglobin and cy- tochrome c in C. cristata brain. Neuroglobin, a respiratory protein typically found in vertebrate neurons, displays three unique amino acid substitutions in hooded seal. Corynosoma acanthocephalans in their paratenic fish hosts in the northern Baltic Sea

En 1996-1997, nous avons etudie les stages cystacanthes de trois especes de Corynosoma (Acanthocephala), C. strumosum et C. semerme, ainsi qu'une nouvelle espece C. magdaleni parasite du chabot a quatre cornes (Myoxocephalus quadricornis) dans le golfe de Bothnie. Age-associated DNA damage is accelerated in the senescence-accelerated mice

We investigated how the DNA status correlates with the aging process in organisms, in different organs and in tissues using two inbred strains of mice, which are genetically related but have different senescence patterns. The SAMP1 mice belong to an accelerated senescence-prone and short lived strain, the other, SAMR1 mice are from an accelerated senescence-resistant and long lived strain. Using the alkaline filter elution technique, pieces of tissues from six organs: lung, intestine, liver, brain, muscle, and heart have been examined for DNA damage, mainly DNA single strand breaks. Diagnosis of flavobacteriosis by direct amplification of rRNA genes

A broad-range bacterial PCR method with universal 16S rDNA targeting primers and bacterial cultivation was used to identify the putative pathogen in flavobacterial outbreaks. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis and sequencing of the partial 16S rDNA PCR products of 10 skin samples and 10 representative isolates derived from the same fish specimens revealed differences between direct molecular and cultivation-based analysis. Sequencing of the complete 26S rRNA genes of all Dekkera/Brettanomyces species colonizing different beverages revealed the potential for a specific primer and probe design to support diagnostic PCR approaches and FISH. The nucleotide and partial amino acid sequences of rat fetuin. Identity with the natural tyrosine kinase inhibitor of the rat insulin receptor.

Fetuins are among the major plasma proteins, yet their biological role has remained elusive. Here we report the molecular cloning of rat fetuin and the sequence analysis of a full-length clone, RF619 of 1456 bp with an open reading frame of 1056 bp encoding 352 amino acid residues. The coding part of RF619 was identical with the cDNA sequence of the natural inhibitor of the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase from rat (pp63) except for four substitutions and a single base insertion causing divergence of the predicted protein sequences. The nucleotide sequences of two Escherichia coli genes, dcuA and dcuB (formerly designated genA and genF), have been shown to encode highly homologous products, M(r) 45,751 and 47,935 (434 and 446 amino acid residues) with 36% sequence identity (63% similarity). These proteins have a high proportion (approximately 61%) of hydrophobic residues and are probably members of a new group of integral inner membrane proteins. We have isolated and sequenced one intergenic region and a small part of the flanking regions (18S and 26S rRNA coding regions) of the rRNA-encoding genes (rDNA) from the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. This region is about 3.8 Kb long. Northern blot hybridizations and S1 mapping experiments demonstrated the presence of a partially processed 21S rRNA precursor while has the same 5' terminus as the 32S primary precursor, also in developmental stages characterized by a low rate of rRNA synthesis.

Two changes of the same nucleotide confer resistance to diuron and antimycin in the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of Schizosaccharomyces pombe

AbstractDiuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) and antimycin, both inhibitors of mitochondrial respiration, block electron flow between cytochromes b and c1. Mutants resistant to either drug have been selected using Schizosaccharomyces pombe strains with an extrachromosomally inherited mutator. In analogy to Saccharomyces cerevisiae these mutational sites were assumed to map in the cytochrome b gene.
