Our study data demonstrate the additional benefit derived from continued use of a contralateral hearing aid (HA) post-cochlear implantation for speech recognition ability in quiet and in noise. Dyslexia, a specific reading disability, runs in families. Therefore, the risk for a child to become dyslexic increases multifold if reading difficulties occur in the family. One risk factor for dyslexia is a deficit in speech perception. Using EEG, speech sound discrimination was found to be more demanding than non- speech discrimination in typical readers in Study I. In an associative recognition task, distractors generally consist of a rearrangement of the items composing the study pairs. This makes it possible that processing the distractors generates retroactive interference on memory for the study pairs. In Experiment 1, we explored this possibility in a yes/no recognition test concerning previously learned arbitrary associations between visual symbols and auditory syllables.
