Developing a metatheoretical framework for second language development : a cultural-historical theory and dynamic systems theory perspective

The main aim of this article-based dissertation is to construct and articulate a dialectical metatheoretical architecture for the study of second language development termed Purposive-Historical Systems Theory (PHiST) invoking, inter alia, the axiomatic imperatives of dynamic systems theory (DST), Vygotskian cultural-historical theory (CHT), and Pepperian root metaphor theory (RMT). Creaky voice and utterance fluency measures in predicting perceived fluency and oral proficiency of spontaneous L2 Finnish

While utterance fluency measures are often studied in rela tion to perceived L2 fluency and proficiency, the effect of creaky voice remains ignored. However, creaky voice is frequent in a number of languages, including Finnish, where it serves as a cue for phrase-boundaries and turn-taking. In this study we inves tigate the roles of creaky voice and utterance fluency measures in predicting fluency and proficiency ratings of spontaneous L2 Finnish (F2) speech. In so doing, 16 expert raters participated in assessing narrative spontaneous speech samples from 160 learn ers of Finnish. Lexical Substitution and Paraphasia in Advanced Dementia of the Alzheimer Type

Abstract The paper presents the case study of lexical selection in Alzheimer-type dementia. Lexical substitutions in poem recitation and conversations of a Russian speaker, who suffered Alzheimer-type dementia, were analyzed on the background of the lexical retrieval and slip-of-the-tongue phenomena. The classification of the substitutions is worked out on the basis of the links between a target word and its substitutions. The current context plays an essential role as natural priming for a substitution in a poem recitation. This study assesses the interaction of the postural control system and the production of expressive vocal behavior during speech and singing. In particular, we focus on the head, whose motions have been implicated for both postural control and spoken language production. How does head motion behavior simultaneously serve posture control and linguistic communication during vocalization? This study examines the interaction of these two subsystems by measuring the effects of different levels of vocal effort (loudness) on speech and singing. W wyniku co najmniej dwóch istotnych procesów społecznych (migracje z Ukrainy oraz rozwój współpracy międzynarodowej w obszarze szkolnictwa wyższego) znacząco wzrosła liczba obcokrajowców w raczej monokulturowej do tej pory Polsce. Questo contributo esamina, nella consolatio ad parentes che chiude il logos epitaphios, il modo in cui Pericle propone di superare il lutto che ha colpito alcuni padri nel primo anno di guerra, invitandoli in primo luogo a generare altri figli. Ciò consentirebbe a quei padri di superare la potenziale aporia tra l’agire nell'interesse strettamente individuale e l’agire nell’interesse della grandezza della polis, obliando il dolore privato con la procreazione di altri figli e con l’onore garantito dalla memoria pubblica: verrebbe così ripristinato l’equilibrio necessario tra partecipazione democratica, condizione di rischio condivisa e adeguatezza del processo deliberativo.
