Conformationally rigid molecular and polymeric naphthalene-diimides containing C6H6N2 constitutional isomers
2021
Organic thin films based on naphthalenediimides (NDIs) bearing alkyl substituents have shown interesting properties for application in OLEDs, thermoelectrics, solar cells, sensors and organic electronics. However, the polymorphic versatility attributed to the flexibility of alkyl chains remains a challenging issue, with detrimental implications on the performances. Aryl analogues containing C6H6N2 constitutional isomers are herein investigated as one of the possible way-out strategies. The synthesis of molecular and polymeric species is described, starting from naphthaleneteracarboxyldianhydride with isomeric aromatic amines and hydrazine. The materials are fully characterized by spectrosco…
Stability improvement of PMMA and Lumogen® coatings for hybrid white LEDs
2014
Hybrid white LEDs employing perylene-based dyes for the frequency down-conversion of blue light, generated by a standard inorganic source, suffer from colour rendering variations due to the degradation of the organic molecule under prolonged irradiation. To avoid such inconvenient, proper encapsulation of the dyes in resins or other polymer matrices can prevent their accelerated ageing; nevertheless, embedding polymers can also exhibit significant bleaching caused by chemico-physical agents. Among all, polymethyl methacrilate (PMMA) is one of the most used materials for the fabrication of hybrid LEDs' colour conversion coatings, therefore its stability needs to be investigated.
Electrodes for GaOHPc:PCBM/P3HT:PCBM bulk heterojunction solar cell
2012
Abstract The bulk heterojunction approach appears to be one of the most promising concepts of creating efficient, low cost and easily producible organic solar cells. For this purpose one of the best materials was regioregular poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT), which is widely used as a donor molecule and a hole transporter, with soluble fullerene derivative (PCBM) as an acceptor and electron transporter. The main drawback of this highly efficient blend is its limited spectral range, covering only a 350–650 nm spectral interval. So the main aim of the present work was to extend the spectral range of the cell up to 850 nm by adding a second bulk heterojunction layer of complementary absorption spe…
Quantitative evaluation of the preferential orientation ofpara-phenylene vinylene pentamers in polystyrene films by optically detected magnetic reson…
2007
The morphology of drop-casted and spin-coated films of blends ofpara-phenylene vinylenederived pentamers with polystyrene is investigated by means of X-band optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) of the triplet excited states. Adapting an electron spin resonance simulation program to ODMR, the orientation distribution function of the oligomers in the films could be quantified. After drop casting or spin coating the pentamers from a solution, the oligomers tend to lie with their backbones in the plane of the film. The parameters of film preparation and the type of pentamer strongly influence the orientation distribution function. Also, the study of preferentially oriented films allows …
Supra-aggregates of fiber-forming anisotropic molecules.
2006
In this paper, the self-organization of fiber-forming anisotropic molecules is inspected both theoretically and experimentally. In the first part, a theoretical model which extends the de Gennes theory of thin films to assemblies of strongly anisotropic molecules is reported. The model predicts that solid supported thin films made up of fiber-forming discotic molecules can grow with both tangential and radial arrangement of the fibers, respectively leading to the formation of compact and holed supra- aggregates. These last systems form according to the following picture. The tangential growth minimizes the number of unfavorable free ends but introduces elastic strain especially in the centr…
Enhanced Mechanical Properties in Organofluorosilica Thin Films
2008
Fluorinated hybrid organic-inorganic silicates (ORMOSIL) thin films display exceptional mechanical properties in terms of both hardness and elastic modulus that can be finely tuned by varying the angular velocity of the spin coating process. Hence, as traditional alkyl-modified silica xerogels generally show poor mechanical behavior, these materials offer a solution to a major limitation to applicability of ORMOSIL-based films.
<title>Irradiation effects in lead zirconate thin films</title>
2003
Lead zirconate PbZrO3 (PZ) and PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT) sol-gel films with a thickness of up to 1.5 μm were deposited on TiO2/Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by spin coating technique and heterostructures of the same composition as well as on Pb0.92La0.08 (Zr0.65Ti0.35)O3 (PLZT-8) (with a thickness of 0.4 μm) were pulse laser deposited (PLD) on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si. Observation of a typical antiferroelectric (AFE) double hysteresis loop in obtained PZ heterostructures at room temperature was attributed to the superior dielectric strength in case of thin film materials. The thermal behavior of dielectric permittivity e of PZ film reveals a maximum near 225°C on heating and 219°C on cooling. The higher res…

Self-organization and nanostructural control in thin film heterojunctions.
2013
In spite of more than two-decades of studies of molecular self-assembly, the achievement of low cost, easy-to-implement and multi-parameter bottom-up approaches to address the supramolecular morphology in three-dimensional (3D) systems is still missing. In the particular case of molecular thin films, the 3D nanoscale morphology and function are crucial for both fundamental and applied research. Here we show how it is possible to tune the 3D film structure (domain size, branching, etc.) of thin film heterojunctions with nanoscale accuracy together with the modulation of their optoelectronic properties by employing an easy two-step approach. At first we prepared multi-planar heterojunctions w…
PV effect of fullerene/poly(3-hexylthiophene) blend sensitized by phthalocyanine having infrared absorption CT band
2008
An attempt was made to extend the photosensitivity spectral range of fullerene/poly(3-hexylthiophene) blend to NIR region by adding extra electron donor — hydroxygallium phthalocyanine (GaOHPc) with a strong and wide intermolecular charge transfer (CT) band around 830 nm. Multilayer cells of ITO/PEDOT: PSS/6 GaOHPc/P3HT: C61(CO2Et)2 have been prepared by spin coating with vacuum evaporated Al or In top electrodes. Significant photosensitivity of the cells was in 370–900 nm spectral range. However charge carrier photogeneration efficiency was 3 times higher for illumination in P3HT absorption band as compared with the GaOHPc CT band at 830 nm. But when GaOHPc was mixed in the blend forming P…
