Raman spectroscopy of the high- and low-spin states of the spin crossover complex Fe(phen)2(NCS)2: an initial approach to estimation of vibrational c…

2000

Abstract Raman spectra of the spin-crossover complex Fe(phen)2(NCS)2 in the solid state have been recorded at 785 nm as a function of temperature to investigate the contribution of intramolecular vibrations to the entropy change, ΔS, associated with spin crossover. The modes of major interest for estimating the contribution lie in the range 100–500 cm−1, where the largest qualitative changes with temperature in the Raman spectra were observed. Analysis of these data, with the working assumption of an average frequency in this range as representative of the 15 distortion modes of an idealised FeN6 octahedron, leads to the conclusion that the intramolecular vibrations represent a primary cont…

Spin-crossover in the [Fe(abpt)2(NCX)2] (X=S, Se) system: Structural, Magnetic, calorimetric and photomagnetic studies

1999

[EN] The compounds [Fe(abpt)(2)(NCS)(2)] (1) and [Fe(abpt)(2)(NCSe)(2)] (2) with abpt = 4-amino-3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole have been synthesized. The X-ray structures have been determined at 293 K. 1 and 2 are isostructural and crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with Z = 2, a = 8.538(8), b = 10.246(8), c = 16.45(2) Angstrom, beta = 93.98(9)degrees for 1 and a = 8.623(2), b = 10.243(3), c = 16.585(3) Angstrom, beta = 93.19(2)degrees for 2. In both complexes, the coordination core has a similar pseudo-octahedral geometry with the NCS- (1) and NCSe- (2) groups in the trans-position. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data give evidence for a low-spin (LS)high…

Light induced excited spin state trapping in the binuclear spin crossover compound [Fe(bpym)(NCS)2]2(bpym) exhibiting a high-spin ground state

2008

Abstract A photo-magnetic effect is evidenced using near-infrared light in the binuclear complex [Fe(bpym)(NCS) 2 ] 2 (bpym). This compound has a 5 T 2g – 5 T 2g ground state and exhibits no thermal spin crossover – in contrast to the analogous [Fe(bpym)(NCSe) 2 ] 2 (bpym). The estimated photo-conversion ratio is ca. 30%. By means of magnetic susceptibility measurements as well as Raman and infrared absorption spectroscopies, the nature of the photo-induced phase was established as the 5 T 2g – 1 A 1g state, which means that only one iron center is converted to low-spin. The photo-induced state was completely converted back to the ground state either by visible light excitation or by heatin…

Magnetic behavior control in niccolite structural metal formate frameworks [NH2(CH3)2][Fe(III)M(II)(HCOO)6] (M = Fe, Mn, and Co) by varying the dival…

2010

By changing template cation but introducing trivalent iron ions in the known niccolite structural metal formate frameworks, three complexes formulated [NH(2)(CH(3))(2)][Fe(III)M(II)(HCOO)(6)] (M = Fe for 1, Mn for 2, and Co for 3) were synthesized and magnetically characterized. The variation in the compositions of the complexes leads to three different complexes: mixed-valent complex 1, heterometallic but with the same spin state complex 2, and heterometallic heterospin complex 3. The magnetic behaviors are closely related to the divalent metal ions used. Complex 1 exhibits negative magnetization assigned as Neel N-Type ferrimagnet, with an asymmetric magnetization reversal in the hysteres…

The Use of Polyoxometalates in the Design of Layer‐Like Hybrid Salts Containing Cationic Mn 4 Single‐Molecule Magnets

2013

Herein, we describe the combination of polyoxometalates (POMs) with a polynuclear metallic cluster Mn4 {Mn4 = [Mn4(OAc)2(pdmH)6]2+, (pdmH = deprotonated pyridine-2,6-dimethanol; C7H8NO2)} for the construction of ionic crystals with layered architectures. Choosing a POM with the appropriate charge and size not only allows for the fine tuning of the stacking periodicity, but it also allows modifying the in-plane packing motif and density of the cationic metallic clusters. The isolation of differently layered hybrid crystals with the same Mn4 single-molecule-magnet (SMM) system allowed for the direct comparison of the magnetic properties of such materials. The variation of the slow relaxation …

Structure and mixed spin state of the chloroiron(III) complex of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaphenyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin, Fe(dpp)Cl

2002

Abstract The chloroiron(III) complex Fe(dpp)Cl (1) of the peripherally crowded 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaphenyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin or dodecaphenylporphyrin (dpp), has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, normal-coordinate structural decomposition analysis (NSD), EPR and Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The dpp ligand present in the crystal structure of this molecule is predominantly saddle-shaped. It is also ruffled and slightly domed according to an analysis of the out-of-plane distortions performed by using NSD. This saddle deformation is significantly smaller than those observed in the chloroiron(III) complexes of the β-p…

A Computational Study of Two-State Conformational Changes in 16-Electron [CpW(NO)(L)] Complexes (L=PH3, CO, CH2, HCCH, H2CCH2)

1999

International audience; High-spin and low-spin [CpW(NO) (L)] complexes are calculated to be remarkably close in energy. Several critical conformational changes in the singlet compounds are predicted to proceed more readily by spin crossover to the triplet hypersurface. The relationships between spin state, π bonding, ligand orientation, and geometry at W are explored.

Inside Cover: Bidirectional Chemo-Switching of Spin State in a Microporous Framework (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 26/2009)

2009

Bidirectional chemo-switching of magnetism occurs in a microporous coordination polymer containing spin-crossover subunits, as described by M. Ohba, J. A. Real, S. Kitagawa, and co-workers in their Communication on page 4767 ff. In situ magnetic measurements reveal that most guest molecules transform the framework spin state from diamagnetic low spin (red) to paramagnetic high spin (yellow), whereas the guest CS2 stabilizes the low-spin state. These induced spin states are retained as a memory effect after the release of the guest.

A family of enneanuclear iron(II) single-molecule magnets.

2008

Complexes [Fe 9 (X) 2 -(02CMe)8{(2-py) 2 CO 2 } 4 ] (X - = OH (1), N 3 - (2), and NCO- (3)) have been prepared by a route previously employed for the synthesis of analogous Co 9 and Ni 9 complexes, involving hydroxide substitution by pseudohalides (N 3 - , NCO-). As indicated by DC magnetic susceptibility measurements, this substitution induced higher ferromagnetic couplings in complexes 2 and 3, leading to higher ground spin states compared to that of 1. Variable-field experiments have shown that the ground state is not well isolated from excited states, as a result of which it cannot be unambiguously determined. AC susceptometry has revealed out-of-phase signals, which suggests that these…

Enantioselective Guest Effect on the Spin State of a Chiral Coordination Framework

2015

The diversity of spin crossover (SCO) complexes that, on the one hand, display variable temperature, abruptness and hysteresis of the spin transition, and on the other hand, are spin-sensitive to the various guest molecules, makes these materials unique for the detection of different organic and inorganic compounds. We have developed a homochiral SCO coordination polymer with a spin transition sensitive to the inclusion of the guest 2-butanol, and these solvates with (R)- and (S)-alcohols demonstrate different SCO behaviours depending on the chirality of the organic analyte. A stereoselective response to the guest inclusion is detected as a shift in the temperature of the transition both fr…
