Spectroscopic studies of Cr3+ ions in natural single crystal of magnesium aluminate spinel MgAl2O4
2021
Abstract The natural spinel crystal MgAl2O4 containing the Cr3+ ions was studied experimentally and theoretically in this paper. The absorption and emission spectra at room and low temperatures were recorded. The experimental spectroscopic results were aided with the crystal field calculations, which returned the energy level schemes of the Cr3+ ions at the Al sites with the local D3d symmetry. Effects of the trigonal crystal field were clearly seen in the calculated results, which were compared with the experimental spectra to yield a good agreement between both data sets.
Effect of coatings on long term behaviour of a commercial stainless steel for solid oxide electrolyser cell interconnect application in H2 /H2O atmos…
2014
Abstract K41X (AISI 441) stainless steel evidenced a high electrical conductivity after 3000 h ageing in H 2 /H 2 O side when used as interconnect for solid oxide electrolyser cells (SOEC) working at 800 °C. Perovskite (La 1 − x Sr x MnO 3 − δ ) and spinel (Co 3 O 4 ) oxides coatings were applied on the surface of the ferritic steel for ageing at 800 °C for 3000 h. Both coatings improved the behaviour of the steel and give interesting opportunities to use the K41X steel as interconnect for hydrogen production via high temperature steam electrolysis. Co 3 O 4 reduced into Co leading to a very good Area Specific Resistance (ASR) parameter, 0.038 Ω cm 2 . Despite a good ASR (0.06 Ω cm 2 ), La …
Ordering kinetics in synthetic Mg(Al,Fe3+)2O4 spinels: Quantitative elucidation of the whole Al-Mg-Fe partitioning, rate constants, activation energi…
2014
A novel procedure, based on the application of the kinetics simulator Gepasi, has been successfully applied for modeling the cation ordering process in two synthetic Mg(Al2-yFe3+y)O4 spinels (y~ 0.39 and 0.54, samples F39 and F54, respectively). The kinetic profiles suggested a two-stage mechanism, with rapid inter-site exchange of Fe3+ with Mg followed by slow exchange of Al with Mg. The trial to apply the classical approaches, based on the explicit solutions of the differential equations corresponding to single-cation (Sha-Chappel model) or two-cation (Müller model) exchange reactions, proved not feasible in the whole time range, thus implying a lack of information about the exchange proc…
Pressure-induced structural and semiconductor-semiconductor transitions in Co0.5Mg0.5Cr2O4
2018
The effect of pressure on the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of Mg-doped Cr bearing spinel $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{o}}_{0.5}\mathrm{M}{\mathrm{g}}_{0.5}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ was studied up to 55 GPa at room-temperature using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, electrical transport measurements, and ab initio calculations. We found that the ambient-pressure phase is cubic (spinel-type, $Fd\overline{3}m$) and underwent a pressure-induced structural transition to a tetragonal phase (space group $I\overline{4}m2$) above 28 GPa. The ab initio calculation confirmed this first-order phase transition. The resistivity of the sample decreased at low pressures …
Reaction Sequence in the Preparation of NiAl2O4 Spinel-Mullite Composites by Sol-Gel
2005
NiAl 2 O 4 spinel-mullite composites were prepared by simultaneous replacement of Al by Ti and/or Ni in 3:2 stoichiometric mullite. Specimens having nominal compositions 3(Al 2-2x Ni x Ti x O 3 ).2SiO 2 (x = 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.2) and 3(Al 2-x M x O 3) .2SiO 2 (M = Ni 2+ or Ti 4+ and x = 0.05) were synthesized by sol-gel techniques, which provide homogeneous gels in the SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 system. Gel structures investigated by infrared (IR) spectroscopy revealed the formation of Al-O-Si bonds in dried gels. The reaction sequence of gel-derived glasses, previously obtained by preheating gels at 750°C for 3 h, was evaluated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectro…
Hydrothermal synthesis of nanostructured inorganic powders by a continuous process under supercritical conditions
2005
Abstract In this study, using a prototype of hydrothermal synthesis in subcritical and supercritical water working in a continuous way, nanometric ceramic precursors with perfectly defined composition are produced: spinel ferrites such as Fe2CoO4, TiO2 with anatase structure and also perovskite structures such as BaZrO3. The as-prepared powders are fully characterized by complementary experiments: X-ray diffraction, electron microscopies, EDX spectrometry, surface area measurement, etc. Thus, particles size, morphology, aggregation state, crystal structure, composition are investigated. Moreover, magnetic properties of the ferrites products are studied. The powders obtained are pure phases …
Garnet and spinel lherzolite assemblages in MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 and CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2: thermodynamic models and an experimental conflict
2012
The recent publication of an updated thermodynamic dataset for petrological calculations provides an opportunity to illustrate the relationship between experimental data and the dataset, in the context of a new set of activity–composition models for several key minerals. These models represent orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and garnet in the system CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 (CMAS), and are valid up to 50 kbar and at least 1800 °C; they are the first high-temperature models for these phases to be developed for the Holland & Powell dataset. The models are calibrated with reference to phase-relation data in the subsystems CaO–MgO–SiO2 (CMS) and MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 (MAS), and will themselves form the basis o…
Up-conversion and Photoluminescence in Er3+ Single Crystal MgAl-spinel
2015
Abstract Traditional and up-conversion luminescence of MgAl 2 O 4 single crystal doped with erbium ions obtained by the Verneuil method has been investigated. The time resolved spectral measurements of the green and red up-conversion luminescence bands show that a build-up part is present in the up-conversion luminescence kinetics. This means that energy transfer process is involved in the creation of the luminescence. Considering rather small concentration of Er 3+ in the material (0.12 mass %), the expected up-conversion mechanism should be excited state absorption since the average distance between erbium ions is high. The above-mentioned considerations suggest that clustering of the act…
Lattice dynamics of ZnAl2O4 and ZnGa2O4 under high pressure
2010
In this work we present a ¿rst-principles density functional study of the vibrational properties of ZnAl2 O4 and ZnGa2 O4 as function of hydrostatic pressure. Based on our previous structural characterization of these two compounds under pressure, herewith, we report the pressure dependence on both systems of the vibrational modes for the cubic spinel structure, for the CaFe2 O4-type structure (Pnma) in ZnAl2 O4 and for marokite (Pbcm) ZnGa2 O4. Additionally we report a second order phase transition in ZnGa2 O4 from the marokite towards the CaTi2 O4-type structure (Cmcm), for which we also calculate the pressure dependence of the vibrational modes at the ¿ point. Our calculations are comple…
