Abstract Traditionally, megaspores have supplied the most relevant character for the taxonomy of Isoetes at several systematic levels, including discriminant features usually used in species identification and diagnosis. Isoetes histrix Bory is a terrestrial circum-Mediterranean quillwort characterized by dark, shiny, and persistent phyllopodia with megaspore sporangia completely covered by a velum and tuberculate megaspores. The objective of this thesis is to develop a method based on the acquisition of excitation-emission matrices of fluorescence (EEMF) coupled with the use of fluorescence lifetime measurement in spectroscopy and microscopy (FLIM). These techniques have great potential due to their speed, low sample volume required for analysis, non-destructive sample analysis, and low cost. This chapter deals with induction of haploidy via parthenogenesis in Persian walnut and via microspore embryogenesis in almond and hazelnut. Haploid induction through in situ parthenogenesis using pollination with irradiated pollen to stimulate the embryogenic development of the egg cell, followed by in vitro culture of the immature haploid embryos. Microspore embryogenesis allows the induction of immature pollen grains (microspores), to move away from the normal gametophytic developmental route in the direction of the sporophytic one, yielding homozygous organisms (embryos in this case). Abstract The paper presents the results of combined effects of an extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (50 Hz) (ELF EMF) and SiO2 nanoparticles on fluorescence of plant gametic cells (immature microspores). The data were recorded by a BD FACSJazz® cell sorter after cell irradiation by blue laser (488 nm). A significant difference of fluorescence was observed between gametic cells after 1 hour incubation in suspension of SiO2 nanoparticles and the control gametic cells. This review discusses the effects of ethanol on the inhibition of growth and germination of fungi and on the inactivation of fungal spores. After a brief survey on the impact of spoilage fungi on the economy and food quality, the major applications of ethanol in controlling fruit decay and extending the shelf-life of food products are reviewed. Many parameters including minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and D-values for various moulds are included. The thermodynamic relationship between the liquid phase and the headspace and the mode of action of ethanol on fungi are explained. Due to their promising use as a fumigant, special attention is paid to ethanol vapours.

Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) is an important species for European fisheries and aquaculture. Recently, the myxosporean Henneguya zschokkei has been observed to infect the muscles of whitefish in fish farms. Plasmodia of H. zschokkei prevent marketing of the fillet and cause economic losses. The factors associated with occurrence of the parasite in fish farms have not been investigated previously. We studied age-dependence, seasonality, and within-host distribution of H. zschokkei plasmodia in farmed whitefish by examining a total of 1599 fish. Food contamination with heat-resistant fungi (HRF), and their spores, is a major issue among fruit processors, being frequently found in fruit juices and concentrates, among other products, leading to considerable economic losses and food safety issues.
