Improving a traffic operator interface using an ontology and intelligent rules

2007

The Transportation and traffic domain is cross-disciplinary; Different areas must be covered to solve complex problems. It also involves the use of different systems for monitoring, visualization, information distribution, control, communication, etc. All of these systems are implemented using different levels of technology. In most cases the control of these systems is handled by [graphic] user interfaces. In the past years the number of systems has grown substantially and because of their "monolytic" design, they have different and in most cases not-compatible user-interfaces. A generic interface would be useful to improve not only the different processes but also the efficiency of the op…

Comparing Tangible and Fully Virtual Haptic Systems for HMI Studies in Simulated Driving Situations

2019

International audience; The contribution of tangible and intangible feedback is compared for virtual tactile car Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) design, to measure their performance both in static conditions and while driving. A subjectively calibrated transparent glass provides tangible passive haptics, and visual cues are used to study sensory substitution-based intangible interactions. The results show that the performance of the subjects was significantly improved in driving conditions as they interacted faster, more accurately and with a higher satisfaction. In addition, our findings highlight that the contribution of tangible systems is significantly lower in driving conditions, raisin…

Identification of differential risk hotspots for collision and vehicle type in a directed linear network

2019

Traffic accidents can take place in very different ways and involve a substantially distinct number and types of vehicles. Thus, it is of interest to know which parts of a road structure present an overrepresentation of a specific type of traffic accident, specially for some typologies of collisions and vehicles that tend to trigger more severe consequences for the users being involved. In this study, a spatial approach is followed to estimate the risk that different types of collisions and vehicles present in the central area of Valencia (Spain), considering the accidents observed in this city during the period 2014-2017. A directed spatial linear network representing the non-pedestrian ro…

Deep Learning-Based Real-Time Object Detection in Inland Navigation

2019

International audience; Semi-autonomous and fully-autonomous systems must have knowledge about the objects in their environment to ensure a safe navigation. Modern approaches implement deep learning techniques to train a neural network for object detection. This project will study the effectiveness of using several promising algorithms such as Faster R-CNN, SSD, and different versions of YOLO, to detect, classify, and track objects in near real-time fluvial domain. Since no dataset is available for this purpose in literature, we first started by annotating a dataset of 2488 images with almost 35 400 annotations for training the convolutional neural network architectures. We made this data s…

An Embedded Real-Time Automatic Lane-Keeping System

2007

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are safety systems capable of identifying an unavoidable dangerous scenario and reacting coherently. An automatic lane-keeping system is designed to prevent dangerous events when the driver left inadvertently his/her own lane. In this paper a real-time automatic lane-keeping system is proposed. The main features of the system are the lane markers location process as well as the generation of the vehicle's steering angle. The system has been prototyped using the Celoxica RC203 board, equipped with a Xilinx Virtex II FPGA, for real-time processing of real motorway scenes coming from a CCD camera on a moving vehicle. The required processing time is 25,…

Incomplete 3D motion trajectory segmentation and 2D-to-3D label transfer for dynamic scene analysis

2017

International audience; The knowledge of the static scene parts and the moving objects in a dynamic scene plays a vital role for scene modelling, understanding, and landmark-based robot navigation. The key information for these tasks lies on semantic labels of the scene parts and the motion trajectories of the dynamic objects. In this work, we propose a method that segments the 3D feature trajectories based on their motion behaviours, and assigns them semantic labels using 2D-to-3D label transfer. These feature trajectories are constructed by using the proposed trajectory recovery algorithm which takes the loss of feature tracking into account. We introduce a complete framework for static-m…

PV-Alert: A fog-based architecture for safeguarding vulnerable road users

2017

International audience; High volumes of pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users (VRUs) have much higher casualty rates per mile; not surprising given their lack of protection from an accident. In order to alleviate the problem, sensing capabilities of smartphones can be used to detect, warn and safeguard these road users. In this research we propose an infrastructure-less fog-based architecture named PV-Alert (Pedestrian-Vehicle Alert) where fog nodes process delay sensitive data obtained from smartphones for alerting pedestrians and drivers before sending the data to the cloud for further analysis. Fog computing is considered in developing the architecture since it is an emer…

A multi-agent system for obtaining dynamic origin/destination matrices on intelligent road networks

2012

Dynamic Origin/Destination matrices are one of the most important parameters for efficient and effective transportation system management. These matrices describe the vehicle flow between different points inside a region of interest for a given period of time. Usually, dynamic O/D matrices are estimated from link traffic counts, home interview and/or license plate surveys. Unfortunately, estimation methods take O/D flows as time invariant for a certain number of intervals of time, which cannot be suitable for some traffic applications. However, the advent of information and communication technologies (e.g., vehicle-to-infrastructure dedicated short range communications — V2I) to the transpo…

An optimization approach for communal home meal delivery service

2009

Abstract: This paper is the first to discuss the communal home meal delivery problem. The problem can be modelled as a multiple travelling salesman problem with time windows, that is closely related to the well-studied vehicle routing problem with time windows. Experimental results are reported for a real-life case study from Central Finland over several alternative scenarios using the SPIDER commercial solver. The comparison with current practice reveals that a significant savings potential can be obtained using off-the-shelf optimization tools. As such, the potential for supporting real-life communal routing problems can be considered to be important for VRP practitioners.
