Domestic Homicide and Emotions from the Late Nineteenth Century to the 1920s

2020

Some scholars have suggested that a significant change in homicides and interpersonal violence occurred in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This new type of violence was characterised by strong feelings between the offender and their victim, and the change was connected to modernisation, changes in power balance between men and women, and individualism. Based on the Court of Appeal documents, we deduced that the murder of one’s spouse, father, or brother were the most prevalent homicides within families in Finland at the time. The Court documents, in conjunction with newspaper accounts, captured the trend of troubled family relationships and demonstrated that lethal family…

Liturgia domowa sprawowana przez małżonków w codzienności

2020

Knowledge Work, Working Time, and Use of Time Among Finnish Dual-Earner Families

2011

The industrial working-time regime is dissolving—not dramatically, but rather as a trend. A new trend is that those in dynamic sectors and in a good labor market position work long hours: Demanding knowledge work appears to require the marginalization of private life. This study investigates the family situation of knowledge workers, the concentration of knowledge workers into family, working time, and use of time in different family types. The analysis is based on the Finnish Use of Time data (1999-2000) using family(spouse)-level data. Compared with other categories of employment, the results suggest only minor quantitative differences between knowledge worker families in working time an…

Different coping patterns in the families of aphasic people

1987

Abstract Changes occurring in families as a result of aphasia are important to study as part of the rehabilitation process. It has been shown that the most common attitude in the families of aphasic people seems to be overprotection which increases mutual dependence between spouses (Biorn-Hansen 1957, Malone, Ptacek and Malone 1970, Kinsella and Duffy 1980). It has been suggested that behind this overprotective attitude are. perhaps, latent guilt feelings or prevalent problems and anxiety (Borden 1%2. Overs and Belknap 1967, Buck 1968. Mykyta, Bowling, Nelson and Lloyd 1976). Generalizations about coping mechanisms offamilies are difficult to make especially from small regional samples or, …

The Clip Approach : A Visual Methodology to Support the (Re)Construction of Life Narratives

2021

Major life changes may cause an autobiographical rupture and a need to work on one’s narrative identity. This article introduces a new qualitative interview methodology originally developed to facilitate 10 prostate cancer patients and five spouses in the (re)creation of their life narratives in the context of a series of interventive interviews conducted over a timespan of several months. In “The Clip Approach” the interviewees’ words, phrases, and metaphors are reflected back in a physical form (“the Clips”) as visual artifacts that allow the interviewees to re-enter and re-consider their experience and life and re-construct their narratives concerning them. Honoring the interviewees as …

Dialogue and Dominance in Couple Therapy for Depression: Exploring Therapists' Responses in Creating Collaborative Moments.

2019

Previous investigations have found specific communication patterns in couples dealing with depression, specifically when depression concurs with conjugal conflicts. The presence of these patterns can reflect couples' difficulties in engaging in collaborative communication during their sessions, posing a real challenge for therapists. This exploratory study uses a dialogical approach to examine issues of dominance and type of dialogue in two couples who differed in terms of their levels of dyadic adjustment. The therapists' reactions were explored in order to detect the kinds of responses that were most effective at engendering a collaborative attitude in therapy sessions. The method used to…
