Screening of antioxidant potentials and bioactive properties of the extracts obtained from two Centaurea L. species (C. kroumirensis coss. and C. sic…

2020

Herbal medicines, dietary supplements, or infusions with health promoting effects can note strong consumer demand. Hence, researchers and scientists have been increasingly focusing on the promotion of medicinal plants. In this respect, the present study has the evaluation of the biological properties of different extracts (hexane, chloroform, methanol, ultrasonic, essential oil, and supercritical) obtained from two Centaurea species (C. kroumirensis (Coss.) and C. sicula L. subsp sicula) as purpose. Antioxidative activities were assessed by in vitro assays including total phenolic content, free radical scavenging assay and ferric ion reducing power. Among the fourteen extracts examined, the…

Aktywność biologiczna Bacillus amyloliquefaciens wobec Fusarium spp. wyizolowanych z pędów szparaga (Asparagus officinalis L.)

2016

Patogeny roślin, takie jak Fusarium spp. to najważniejsze czynniki, które co roku powodują znaczne straty i/lub uszkodzenia produktów rolnych. Celem przeprowadzonych badań była ocena in vitro właściwości biologicznych B. amyloliquefaciens wobec F. proliferatum i F. oxysporum wyizolowanych z pędów bielonego szparaga odmiany Grolim. W badaniach uwzględniono: gęstość i wiek hodowli bakterii, rodzaj podłoża oraz wpływ płynu pohodowlanego. Ocenę właściwości antagonistycznych hodowli bakterii 6, 12, 24 i 48- godzinnych przeprowadzono w oparciu o wskaźniki: zdolność kiełkowania zarodników, tempo wzrostu liniowego i indeks tempa wzrostu grzybów z zastosowaniem podłoży PDA oraz szparagowego.

Could halophilic archaea improve the traditional salted anchovies (Engraulis encrasicholus L) safety and quality?

2010

Aims: The positive influence of two selected extremely halophilic archaea strains in the production of salted anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus, L., 1758) was highlighted. Methods and Results: Anchovies produced with salt artificially contaminated with halophiles exhibited lower loads of staphylococci, Enterobacteriaceae and lactic acid bacteria, and a reduced content of histamine as well as an improved organoleptic acceptance. Conclusions: The findings of this survey are expected to enhance the safety of salted anchovies, with regard to the histamine formation during ripening, and to improve the sensory attributes of this product. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study represents…

Vaccinium spp. ogu izspiedu ekstraktu pretiekaisuma īpašības

2020

Global warming “heating up” the ICU through Candida auris infections: the climate changes theory

2019

The most enigmatic aspect of the rise of Candida auris as a human pathogen is that it emerged simultaneously on three continents, with each clade being genetically distinct. Although new pathogenic fungal species are described regularly, these are mostly species associated with single cases in individuals who are immunosuppressed.

The burden of Candida species colonization in NICU patients: a colonization surveillance study

2017

Fungal infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The identifi-cation of specific risk factors supports pre-vention of candidemia in neonates. Effec-tive prophylactic strategies have recently become available, but the identification and adequate management of high-risk in-fants is still a priority. Prior colonization is a key risk factor for candidemia. For this reason, surveillance studies to monitor in-cidence, species distribution, and antifun-gal susceptibility profiles, are mandatory. Among 520 infants admitted to our NICU between January 2013 and December 2014, 472 (90.77%) were included in the study. Forty-eight out of 472 (…

Role of two co-occurring Mediterranean sea urchins in the formation of barren from Cystoseira canopy

2015

Abstract In the Mediterranean Sea the co-occurring sea urchins Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula are usually considered to share the same ecological role in the formation of barren from Cystoseira canopy. However, their foraging ability may vary due to feeding behavior and species-specific morphological traits. The relative effects of P. lividus and A. lixula on Cystoseira canopy was tested experimentally both in the laboratory, at a density of about 20 ind./m 2 , and in the field by gut content analysis. Field and laboratory results show that A. lixula is unable to affect Cystoseira spp. Furthermore, these results confirmed the great ability of P. lividus to consume Cystoseira canop…

Filopodia-like actin cables position nuclei in association with perinuclear actin in Drosophila nurse cells

2013

Summary Controlling the position of the nucleus is vital for a number of cellular processes from yeast to humans. In Drosophila nurse cells, nuclear positioning is crucial during dumping, when nurse cells contract and expel their contents into the oocyte. We provide evidence that in nurse cells, continuous filopodia-like actin cables, growing from the plasma membrane and extending to the nucleus, achieve nuclear positioning. These actin cables move nuclei away from ring canals. When nurse cells contract, actin cables associate laterally with the nuclei, in some cases inducing nuclear turning so that actin cables become partially wound around the nuclei. Our data suggest that a perinuclear a…
