Widespread pain among 11-year-old Finnish twin pairs

Objective To examine the prevalence of widespread musculoskeletal pain (WSP) symptoms in 11-year-old Finnish twins and to determine the relative role of genetic and environmental factors in the etiology of WSP. Methods Data on current pain items were collected from 1995 to 1998 from a national sample of Finnish families with 11-year-old twins born between 1984 and 1987. The presence of WSP was determined using a validated questionnaire method. Pairwise similarity was computed for 583 monozygotic (MZ) pairs, 588 same-sex dizygotic (DZ) pairs, and 618 opposite-sex DZ twin pairs. Understanding aroma release from model cheeses by a statistical multiblock approach on oral processing

For human beings, the mouth is the first organ to perceive food and the different signalling events associated to food breakdown. These events are very complex and as such, their description necessitates combining different data sets. This study proposed an integrated approach to understand the relative contribution of main food oral processing events involved in aroma release during cheese consumption. Electrophysiology and neuronal integrity following systemic arterial hypotension in a rat model of unilateral carotid artery occlusion.

Patients with carotid artery stenosis may be particularly susceptible to hypotension-associated cerebral ischemia and subsequent neurological sequelae. Effects of Cortical Spreading Depression on Cortical Blood Flow, Impedance, DC Potential, and Infarct Size in a Rat Venous Infarct Model

A cortical venous infarction model has been evaluated as to the degree of regional flow reduction and by studying effects of cortical spreading depression (CSD). Two adjacent cortical veins were occluded photochemically with rose bengal and fiberoptic illumination. Seven rats served to demonstrate effects on regional cortical blood flow using laser Doppler scanning. Calcium and increase excitability promote tolerance against anoxia in hippocampal slices.

We have previously demonstrated that anoxic preconditioning (APC) protects against a subsequent otherwise 'lethal' anoxic insult in hippocampal slices. Tested here are two hypotheses: (a) APC requires calcium to improve electrical recovery in hippocampal slices; and (b) mild excitation promotes preconditioning neuroprotection. Control hippocampal slices were given a single 'test' anoxic insult followed by reoxygenation. Haven on Earth? Dynamic Connections between Gold and Stock Markets in Turbulent Times

We find that exogenous structural shocks caused by terrorist attacks, wars, political turmoil and gold market specific events have a strong role to play in the analysis of dynamic relationships between gold and stock market returns. Our main finding is that the interaction between the gold market and stock market is much tighter than previously observed. Especially some of the gold market specific shocks have long lasting impacts also on the financial markets. Enhanced nonlinear spectral compression in fibre by external sinusoidal phase modulation

International audience; We propose a new, simple approach to enhance the spectral compression process arising from nonlinear pulse propagation in an optical fibre. We numerically show that an additional sinusoidal temporal phase modulation of the pulse enables efficient reduction of the intensity level of the side lobes in the spectrum that are produced by the mismatch between the initial linear negative chirp of the pulse and the self-phase modulation-induced nonlinear positive chirp. Remarkable increase of both the extent of spectrum narrowing and the quality of the compressed spectrum is afforded by the proposed approach across a wide range of experimentally accessible parameters.

The inclination effect on the performance of water-filled heat pipes

Abstract Heat pipes have been used in wide ranges of applications today including solar engineering. During this research study, the inclination dependent performance of water filled heat pipes was investigated both theoretically and experimentally for solar energy applications. The results showed that the performance of water-filled heat pipes are strongly dependent on the inclination and the heat source temperatures. As a general result, the heat transfer capability of water filled heat pipes is reduced dramatically below a 45° tilt angle.
