Performance Analysis of Sweep-Spread Carrier (S2C) Modulation for Underwater Communications

2022

In the last decades, underwater acoustic communications have seen a growing development with a variety of research as well as commercial applications, dealing with channel distortions, multipath and Doppler effects typical underwater channels. A very robust modulation able to guarantee connectivity in harsh environments (where spectral efficient solutions such as OFDM can be prevented) is the so called sweep-spread carrier (S2C) modulation, which is based on the usage of a linearly time-varying carrier. Underwater modems based on S2C modulations have been patented and successfully adopted in real-world deployments. In this paper, we analyze the performance of S2C both in simulation and infi…

WhoSNext: Recommending Twitter Users to Follow Using a Spreading Activation Network Based Approach

2020

The huge number of modern social network users has made the web a fertile ground for the growth and development of a plethora of recommender systems. To date, recommending a new user profile X to a given user U that could be interested in creating a relationship with X has been tackled using techniques based on content analysis, existing friendship relationships and other pieces of information coming from different social networks or websites. In this paper we propose a recommending architecture - called WhoSNext (WSN) - tested on Twitter and which aim is promoting the creation of new relationships among users. As recent researches show, this is an interesting recommendation problem: for a …

Spread of tomato yellow leaf curl virus in Sicily: partial displacement of another geminivirus originally present.

2006

The geminivirus Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) was reported for the first time in Italy in 2002. We have followed its spread in Sicily, where Tomato yellow leaf curl Sardinia virus (TYLCSV), another tomato-infecting geminivirus, is endemic and has been causing severe crop losses since 1989. The presence of the two viruses was monitored in the main tomato growing area, the Ragusa province, analyzing samples with yellow leaf curling symptoms. At first (spring-summer 2002) both viruses were always found in mixed infections, but in 2003 and 2004 18-35% of plants were found infected by TYLCV alone and 8-28% by TYLCSV alone, with 41-69% carrying both viruses. TYLCV has spread quickly in th…

On Serving Cell Change Reliability in HSDPA Network

2009

In Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) networks the Signaling Radio Bearer (SRB) is transmitted downlink to inform the user i.a. when it needs to make a handover. When transmitting e.g. Voice over IP (VoIP) on High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) SRB is mapped on HSDPA user data channel, High-Speed Downlink Shared Channel (HS-DSCH) in order to maximize voice capacity. The lack of support for soft handover (SHO) of HS-DSCH may compromise the reception of SRB and thus also a possible incoming serving HSDPA cell change command especially at the cell borders. This can lead to serious VoIP service degradation due to prolonged camping on a poor cell and in the worst case even to c…

Experimental validation of a customized phase mask designed to enable efficient computational optical sectioning microscopy through wavefront encodin…

2017

In this paper, wavefront-encoded (WFE) computational optical sectioning microscopy (COSM) using a fabricated square cubic (SQUBIC) phase mask, designed to render the system less sensitive to depth-induced aberration, is investigated. The WFE-COSM system is characterized by a point spread function (PSF) that does not vary as rapidly with imaging depth compared to the conventional system. Thus, in WFE-COSM, image restoration from large volumes can be achieved using computationally efficient space-invariant (SI) algorithms, thereby avoiding the use of depth-variant algorithms. The fabricated SQUBIC phase mask was first evaluated and found to have a 75% fidelity compared to the theoretical desi…

Development of Slewing Mirror Telescope Optical System for the UFFO-pathfinder

2013

The Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) is the UV/optical telescope of UFFO-pathfinder. The SMT optical system is a Ritchey-Chretien (RC) telescope of 100 mm diameter pointed by means of a gimbal-mounted flat mirror in front of the telescope. The RC telescope has a 17 × 17arcmin2 in Field of View and 4.3 arcsec resolution (full width half maximum of the point spread function) The beam-steering mirror enables the SMT to access a 35 × 35degree region and point and settle within 1 sec. All mirrors were fabricated to about 0.02 wavelengths RMS in wave front error (WFE) and 84.7% average reflectivity over 200 nm ~ 650 nm. The RC telescope was aligned to 0.05 wavelengths RMS in WFE (test wavelength 63…

Complex adaptative systems and computational simulation in Archaeology

2017

Traditionally the concept of ‘complexity’ is used as a synonym for ‘complex society’, i.e., human groups with characteristics such as urbanism, inequalities, and hierarchy. The introduction of Nonlinear Systems and Complex Adaptive Systems to the discipline of archaeology has nuanced this concept. This theoretical turn has led to the rise of modelling as a method of analysis of historical processes. This work has a twofold objective: to present the theoretical current characterized by generative thinking in archaeology and to present a concrete application of agent-based modelling to an archaeological problem: the dispersal of the first ceramic production in the western Mediterranean.

COBieOWL, an OWL ontology based on COBie standard

2015

International audience; Building Information Modelling (BIM) standards have been recognized by construction and political actors as a highly promising tool for resolving issues of data dematerialization, notably in the field of Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Facility Management. Among worldwide-adopted BIM standards, there is COBie. COBie’s goals are to dematerialize building data and to enhance building information interoperability. Nevertheless, COBie data is available in static formats such as STEP or spreadsheet templates. Such formats lack logical formalisms and semantic features provided by languages such as OWL. Because of this, in this paper, we propose a method for sem…

Introduction et dispersion d'une espèce envahissante : le cas de l'ambroisie à feuilles d'armoise (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) en France

2011

National audience; Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. (common ragweed) was accidentally introduced into France in the 1860s. Its single vector of introduction in Europe was red clover seeds (Trifolium pratense L.), probably coming from Pennsylvania, United States at the time. A. artemisiifolia was later introduced into France in many places and at different times. This species has no natural or effective seed dispersal mechanisms and the spread of this weed in the territory is ensured by human activities that carry the seeds and create disturbed environments favourable to its development. It is now established in the Rhone Valley and a number of different factors (cropping system evolution, climate…

Predicting spread patterns of centrifugal fertiliser spreaders

2014

International audience; Nowadays farmers recognize the importance of a correct and precise fertiliser application: non-uniform spread patterns cause extra pressure on the environment and might result in economic losses for the farmer. In Europe most spreading is done by centrifugal fertilizer spreaders but their spreading process is not easy to monitor and to control. To perform a precise fertilising farmers need proper tools to determine and evaluate the spread pattern at farm level. Therefore the Flemish Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research (ILVO) is exploring and developing a fast and accurate technique for measuring the spread pattern of conventional centrifugal spreaders. …
