Relationship between carotid intima-media thickness and non valvular atrial fibrillation type.
2015
OBJECTIVE: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is a surrogate marker of subclinical atherosclerosis and it is able to predict both coronary and cerebral vascular events. No data exist on the association between cIMT and non valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) type. We conduct this study with the aim to analyze the association between abnormal cIMT and NVAF type. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of the "Atrial fibrillation Registry for Ankle-brachial index Prevalence Assessment-Collaborative Italian Study (ARAPACIS)" has been performed. Among 2027 patients enrolled in the ARAPACIS, 673 patients, who underwent carotid ultrasound examination to assess cIMT, were included in the study. RESULT…
Association between asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis and degenerative aortic stenosis.
2012
OBJECTIVE: Degenerative aortic stenosis shows similarities with atherosclerosis. To confirm the hypothesis that aortic stenosis is an "atherosclerosis-like" disease, we investigated the association between degenerative aortic stenosis and atherosclerosis of carotid arteries. METHODS: We studied 270 consecutive patients, 135 with degenerative aortic stenosis (trans-aortic peak velocity ≥ 2 m/sec) and other 135 subjects without aortic valve disease. All patients underwent echocardiography and ultrasound scan of the supra-aortic trunks to assess the presence of plaque and/or intima-media thickening (IMT). RESULTS: Atherosclerosis of carotid arteries (IMT and plaque) was significantly more freq…
Changes in ultrasound-assessed carotid intima-media thickness and plaque with a Mediterranean diet: a substudy of the PREDIMED trial.
2014
OBJECTIVE - : The Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea (PREDIMED) trial showed that a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) supplemented with either extra virgin olive oil or 30 g/d of mixed nuts reduced incident cardiovascular events compared with a control (low fat) diet. The mechanisms of cardiovascular protection afforded by MedDiets remain to be uncovered. We assessed the effect of both supplemented MedDiets on internal carotid intima-media thickness (ICA-IMT) and plaque height, the ultrasound features that best predict future cardiovascular events, in subjects at high cardiovascular risk. APPROACH AND RESULTS - : In a PREDIMED subcohort (n=175), plaque height and carotid IMT of 3 prespecified seg…
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) predicts cardio and cerebrovascular events in a twenty years follow-up. A prospective study.
2012
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors, considered as emerging and promoting atherosclerosis. This study aimed at the evaluation of the influence of MetS on the prediction of cerebro and cardiovascular events during a 20 years follow-up period in an asymptomatic population of middle-aged subjects. METHODS: We evaluated 529 asymptomatic persons through a prospective study. Study population was divided into two subgroups: patients with and without MetS. Echo-color-Doppler was used in order to assess the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis. A 20 years follow-up study was carried out in order to estimate the incidence of cerebro and car…
Application of the star-product method to the angular momentum quantization
1992
We define a *-product on ℝ3 and solve the polarization equation f*C=0 where C is the Casimir of the coadjoint representation of SO(3). We compute the action of SO(3) on the space of solutions. We then examine the case of non-zero eigenvalues of C, in order to find finite-dimensional representations of SO(3). Finally, we compute \(\sqrt C *\sqrt C \) as an asymptotic series of C. This gives an explanation of the use of the star square root of C in a paper by Bayen et al. instead of its natural square root.
Mixed-ligand copper(ii)–sulfonamide complexes: effect of the sulfonamide derivative on DNA binding, DNA cleavage, genotoxicity and anticancer activity
2013
Four ternary complexes, [Cu(L1)2(bipy)] (1) [HL1 = N-(6-chlorobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide], [Cu(L2)2(bipy)] (2) [HL2 = N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide], [Cu(L3)2(bipy)]·1/2H2O (3) [HL3 = N-(5,6-dimethylbenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide] and [Cu(L4)2(bipy)] (4) [HL4 = N-(5,6-dimethylbenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide], were prepared and then characterized by X-ray crystallography, spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. Whereas the molecular structure of 1 and 2 consists of a discrete monomeric copper(II) species with a distorted square planar geometry, that of 3 and 4 consists of two independent molecules. In 3, both molecules pre…
Generalized centro-invertible matrices with applications
2014
Centro-invertible matrices are introduced by R.S. Wikramaratna in 2008. For an involutory matrix R, we define the generalized centro-invertible matrices with respect to R to be those matrices A such that RAR = A^−1. We apply these matrices to a problem in modular arithmetic. Specifically, algorithms for image blurring/deblurring are designed by means of generalized centro-invertible matrices. In addition, if R1 and R2 are n × n involutory matrices, then there is a simple bijection between the set of all centro-invertible matrices with respect to R1 and the set with respect to R2.
A Rational Design for Imidazolate-Bridged Linear Trinuclear Compounds from Mononuclear Copper(II) Complexes with 2-[((Imidazol-2-ylmethylidene)amino)…
2001
Two mononuclear copper(II) complexes with the unsymmetrical tridentate ligand 2-[((imidazol-2-ylmethylidene)amino)ethyl]pyridine (HL), [Cu(HL)(H2O)](ClO4)2.2H2O (1) and [Cu(HL)Cl2] (2), have been prepared and characterized. The X-ray analysis of 2 revealed that the copper(II) ion assumes a pentacoordinated square pyramidal geometry with an N3Cl2 donor set. When 1 and 2 are treated with an equimolecular amount of potassium hydroxide, the deprotonation of the imidazole moiety promotes a self-assembled process, by coordination of the imidazolate nitrogen atom to a Cu(II) center of an adjacent unit, leading to the polynuclear complexes [[Cu(L)(H2O)](ClO4)]n (3) and [[Cu(L)Cl].2H2O]n (4). Variab…
Diffusion of colloids in one-dimensional light channels
2004
Single-file diffusion (SFD), prevalent in many chemical and biological processes, refers to the one-dimensional motion of interacting particles in pores which are so narrow that the mutual passage of particles is excluded. Since the sequence of particles in such a situation remains unaffected over time t, this leads to strong deviations from normal diffusion, e.g. an increase of the particle mean-square-displacement as the square root of t. We present experimental results of the diffusive behaviour of colloidal particles in one-dimensional channels with varying particle density. The channels are realized by means of a scanning optical tweezers. Based on a new analytical approach (Kollmann 2…
Crystal and molecular structure and electronic properties of [Cu(phen)2(HL)] · (phen)0.5 · 7H2O (H3L = 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione), a nove…
1998
Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of [Cu(phen)2(HL) · (phen)0.5 · 7H2O (H2L = 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione) has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The structure is built up of neutral [Cu(phen)2(HL)] entities (which are associated to form dinuclear units through hydrogen bonds involving the cyanurate ions), uncoordinated phenanthroline and crystallisation water molecules. The copper atom is involved in a CuN5 chromophore, with an stereochemistry near to a compressed trigonal bipyramid (TBP) but with a significant degree of distortion towards the square pyramidal (SP) topology. The EPR spectrum is indicative of a mixed d z 2 d x 2 −y 2 ground state for the copp…
