Simulating the evolution of stakes on Réunion Island in a context of coastal risk

2017

This paper describes a model and a simulation tool which aim at help decision-makers and planners dealing with their processes for territorial prospective analysis. It is based on a practical study case, located on Réunion Island (France). This study has been carried out within the VULNERARE research program, granted by Foundation de France: one of VULNERARE aims is to estimate and assess Réunion's vulnerability in the next 30 years, in relation to coastal risk. This paper is specifically focussing on the dynamics and the future state of two important stakes: population and urban structures. Will urban development of littoral zones increase? How fast and which type of population will be exp…

Influence of design mistakes and material degradation on the collapse of a long-span RC roof in South Italy

2020

Abstract In 2004, during ordinary maintenance work, consisting in the waterproofing of a building located in the South of Italy, the long-span (14.50 m) in situ cast reinforced concrete (RC) roof partially collapsed. The building, constructed in 1950, was in service as a cinema up to 1967 and utilized as a school up to 1985. Finally, it was a hotel up to 2000. In 2004, when the building was not in service and underwent maintenance work, it partially collapsed under the dead load. After the collapse, which involved a large portion of the roof, several beams and two columns, the Court nominated a first Official Technical Consultant in order to investigate on the causes of failure and related …

Regulējums, risku vadības un tirgus apgūšanas veicināšanai jaunajiem ārvalstu uzņēmumiem, ienākot Ķīnas tirgū

2017

Technical issues in beginning violin: an exploratory study in the classroom with 4-5 years old preschoolers

2018

Temporal genetic structure in a poecilogonous polychaete: the interplay of developmental mode and environmental stochasticity

2014

Background: Temporal variation in the genetic structure of populations can be caused by multiple factors, including natural selection, stochastic environmental variation, migration, or genetic drift. In benthic marine species, the developmental mode of larvae may indicate a possibility for temporal genetic variation: species with dispersive planktonic larvae are expected to be more likely to show temporal genetic variation than species with benthic or brooded non-dispersive larvae, due to differences in larval mortality and dispersal ability. We examined temporal genetic structure in populations of Pygospio elegans, a poecilogonous polychaete with within-species variation in developmental m…

Kielitutkinnot ja muu laajamittainen kielitaidon arviointi Suomessa

2016

This paper describes the development, current state and expected future development of the assessment systems that most of the papers in the present volume cover. Our focus is on the systems serving general education, particularly the Matriculation Examination and national evaluations of educational achievement in languages, as well as the National Certificates of Proficiency aimed at adult language learners. We describe how changes in our understanding of what language proficiency is have affected these assessment systems and discuss the impact that some of them have been expected to have and what is known about that impact. We also discuss how the Common European Framework of Reference ha…

Expectations as Reference Points: Field Evidence from Professional Soccer

2015

We show that professional soccer players and their coaches exhibit reference-dependent behavior during matches. Controlling for the state of the match and for unobserved heterogeneity, we show on a minute-by-minute basis that players breach the rules of the game, measured by the referee’s assignment of cards, significantly more often if their teams are behind the expected match outcome, measured by preplay betting odds of large professional bookmakers. We further show that coaches implement significantly more offensive substitutions if their teams are behind expectations. Both types of behaviors impair the expected ultimate match outcome of the team, which shows that our findings do not si…

Analysis of the psicometric properties of a multiplication and division processes assessment scale

2019

The domain of multiplication and division operations depends on both algorithm management and the ability to identify the semantic structure of the problem and to translate it into mathematical language. Many students present difficulties in identifying the semantic structure of the problem but not applying the algorithm when the problem is presented numericaly. The aim of the study is to validate an assessment tool of the processes involved in multiplication and divisio…

Understanding beginners' mistakes with Haskell

2015

AbstractThis article presents an overview of student difficulties in an introductory functional programming (FP) course taught in Haskell. The motivation for this study stems from our belief that many student difficulties can be alleviated by understanding the underlying causes of errors and by modifying the educational approach and, possibly, the teaching language accordingly. We analyze students' exercise submissions and categorize student errors according to compiler error messages and then manually according to the observed underlying cause. Our study complements earlier studies on the topic by applying computer and manual analysis while focusing on providing descriptive statistics of d…
