The Association Between Smoking Status and Depression in the General Population of Latvia

2015

Introduction Tobacco dependence is the most common substance use disorder in people with mental illness. Smoking and depression are firmly associated and both represent major health problems. Aim The aim of the study was to assess association between smoking status and 12-months depression in representative sample of the general Latvian population. Methods The study was a part of health monitoring survey, a collaborative project between Baltic States and Finland, which monitors health related behaviours; the questionnaire included structured interview and depressive module of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Descriptive statistics and binary regression model were applied. …

PNPLA3 polymorphism influences liver fibrosis in unselected patients with type 2 diabetes

2011

Context: Recently, it has been shown that an allele in the adiponutrin (PNPLA3) gene was strongly associated with increased liver fat content (LFC) and liver fibrosis independent of visceral adiposity and insulin resistance. Objective: In this study, we set out to determine whether the PNPLA3 rs738409 polymorphism was associated with liver fibrosis in unselected patients with type 2 diabetes. Design, setting and participants: Two hundred and thirty-four patients with type 2 diabetes were included in this study. Main outcome measures: LFC was evaluated using 1H-MR spectroscopy; fibrosis was measured using the non-invasive FibroTest®. Results: Advanced liver fibrosis (stage F2 or above) was o…

Obesity, Adipokines and Metabolic Syndrome in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

2012

The complex mechanisms linking fat excess to metabolic syndrome are not well understood, but several experimental studies have shown that altered production of adipokines plays a main role in development and progression of this disorder. In particular, reduced secretion of adiponectin has a crucial role in inducing insulin resistance but also in determining the clustering of elevated triglycerides and small, dense LDL particles. Increased leptin secretion may be responsible for sympathetic nervous system overactivity and hypertension, while reduced omentin may have an important permissive role in the development of atherogenic processes. Finally, cytokines and other adipokines (resistin, vi…

P-0023 Gastric Cancer in Latvia in 1980 – 2010

2012

ABSTRACT Introduction According to GLOBOCAN 2008 data gastric cancer currently is the fourth most common cancer worldwide and the second most common cause of cancer death. The objective of this study was to get comparable data on gastric cancer for 30 years period, to analyze the trends of incidence and mortality in Latvia and to compare with situation in other countries. Methods Incidence and mortality data from 1980 to 2010 in Latvia were obtained from the National Health Service. IARC (GLOBOCAN 2008) database was used for international comparisons. Incidence and mortality rates were age standardized to the World Standard Population and expressed per 100,000 population. Results There were…

P3.281 Gonorrhoea on the Rise in Latvia - Diagnostics and Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance

2013

Background The emergence and international spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Neisseria gonorrhoeae has compromised the treatment and public health management of gonococcal infections. Appropriate diagnostics and surveillance of AMR are critical for controlling infections and in guiding international and national treatment guidelines to ensure appropriate patient management. Methods A questionnaire-based survey regarding the diagnostics and AMR surveillance of N. gonorrhoeae in Latvia was conducted by the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and Infectology of Latvia. Telephone interviews were carried out among the 73 biggest medical laboratories in Latvia. Results In 2011, a …

Resistance training for chronic low back pain in the elderly: A systematic review

2021

Chronic low back pain is a musculoskeletal pathology with a considerably high prevalence in the elderly. This condition increases disability and negatively affects the quality of life. Muscular resistance training is being used as a cornerstone in interventions for elder people due to the numerous benefits associated with physical and functional health. For this reason, the purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature on the main characteristics of resistance training programs in the elder population with chronic low back pain. A literature search in five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Sports Discuss, and Cochrane Library) was carried out. Inclusion-exclusio…

Changes in the Expression of Tachykinin Receptors in the Rat Uterus During the Course of Pregnancy1

2001

In the mammalian female reproductive tract, tachykinin neuropeptides, such as substance P (SP), are localized to a population of sensory fibers and their precise physiological role is still unknown. The aim of the present study was to characterize the population of tachykinin receptors in the pregnant rat uterus and to assess their regulation during the course of pregnancy and after delivery. The expression of the tachykinin NK(1) receptor (NK(1)R), the tachykinin NK(2) receptor (NK(2)R), and the tachykinin NK(3) receptor (NK(3)R) in uteri from rats at different stages of pregnancy and on Day 1 postpartum was investigated by using a semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain re…

Mitochondria as a Target for Future Diabetes Treatments

2015

Diabetes mellitus is rapidly becoming the world’s most dangerous serial killer. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a currently incurable autoimmune disease marked by progressive, and eventually exhaustive, destruction of the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) describes the combination of insulin resistance in peripheral tissue, insufficient insulin secretion from the pancreatic beta cells, and excessive glucagon secretion from the pancreatic alpha cells. T1D as well as severe cases of T2D are treated with insulin replacement, which can merely be considered as life support for the acute phases of the disease. Islet replacement of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells repr…

Glutathione, GlutathioneS-Transferase α and π, and Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Content in Relationship to Drug Resistance in Ovarian Cancer

1997

Glutathione, glutathione S-transferases alpha and pi, and aldehyde dehydrogenase are associated with resistance to carboplatin and/or cyclophosphamide in cell lines. Therefore, we examined whether the expression of these factors in ovarian cancer tissue specimens is associated with resistance of the patients to combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide/carboplatin. Ovarian cancer tissue specimens were taken intraoperatively from 139 patients and frozen in liquid nitrogen, and the contents of glutathione S-transferases alpha and pi, total glutathione, and aldehyde dehydrogenase activity were determined. No association between the levels of glutathione S-transferases alpha and pi or alde…

Insulin resistance and polycystic ovary syndrome.

2008

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in humans, affecting approximately 7-8% of women of reproductive age. Despite the criteria adopted, PCOS is considered to be a predominantly hyperandrogenetic syndrome and the evaluation of metabolic parameters and insulin sensitivity is not mandatory. Most women with PCOS also exhibit features of the metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance, obesity and dyslipidaemia. While the association with type 2 diabetes is well established, whether the incidence of cardiovascular disease is increased in women with PCOS remains unclear. Acknowledging the strong impact of insulin-resistance in the genesis of PCOS co…
