Information transfer and information modification to identify the structure of cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory networks

2017

To fully elucidate the complex physiological mechanisms underlying the short-term autonomic regulation of heart period (H), systolic and diastolic arterial pressure (S, D) and respiratory (R) variability, the joint dynamics of these variables need to be explored using multivariate time series analysis. This study proposes the utilization of information-theoretic measures to measure causal interactions between nodes of the cardiovascular/cardiorespiratory network and to assess the nature (synergistic or redundant) of these directed interactions. Indexes of information transfer and information modification are extracted from the H, S, D and R series measured from healthy subjects in a resting…

Quantitative contrast-enhanced myocardial perfusion magnetic resonance imaging: Simulation of bolus dispersion in constricted vessels

2009

Quantification of myocardial blood flow (MBF) by means of T 1 -weighted first-pass magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) requires knowledge of the arterial input function (AIF), which is usually estimated from the left ventricle (LV). Dispersion of the contrast agent bolus may occur between the LV and the tissue of interest, which leads to systematic underestimation of the MBF. The aim of this study was to simulate the dispersion along a simplified coronary artery with different stenoses. To analyze the dispersion in vessels with typical dimensions of coronary arteries, simulations were performed using the computational fluid dynamics approach. Simulations were accomplished on straight vessels wi…

Parietal Cortex Connectivity as a Marker of Shift in Spatial Attention Following Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation

2021

Non-invasive brain stimulation is a useful tool to probe brain function and provide therapeutic treatments in disease. When applied to the right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) of healthy participants, it is possible to temporarily shift spatial attention and mimic symptoms of spatial neglect. However, the field of brain stimulation is plagued by issues of high response variability. The aim of this study was to investigate baseline functional connectivity as a predictor of response to an inhibitory brain stimulation paradigm applied to the right PPC. In fourteen healthy adults (9 female, aged 24.8 ± 4.0 years) we applied continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) to suppress activity in the …

Spatial source phase : A new feature for identifying spatial differences based on complex-valued resting-state fMRI data

2019

Spatial source phase, the phase information of spatial maps extracted from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data by data‐driven methods such as independent component analysis (ICA), has rarely been studied. While the observed phase has been shown to convey unique brain information, the role of spatial source phase in representing the intrinsic activity of the brain is yet not clear. This study explores the spatial source phase for identifying spatial differences between patients with schizophrenia (SZs) and healthy controls (HCs) using complex‐valued resting‐state fMRI data from 82 individuals. ICA is first applied to preprocess fMRI data, and post‐ICA phase de‐ambiguity and den…
