The effects of a roundtrip trans-American jet travel on physiological stress, neuromuscular performance, and recovery.
2016
The purpose was to examine the effects of a round trip trans-American jet travel on performance, hormonal alterations, and recovery. Ten matched pairs of recreationally trained men were randomized to either a compression group (COMP) ( n = 10; age: 23.1 ± 2.4 yr; height: 174.8 ± 5.3 cm; body mass: 84.9 ± 10.16 kg; body fat: 15.3 ± 6.0%) or control group (CONT) ( n = 9; age: 23.2 ± 2.3 yr; height: 177.5 ± 6.3 cm; weight: 84.3 ± 8.99 kg; body fat: 15.1 ± 6.4%). Subjects flew directly from Hartford, CT to Los Angeles, CA 1 day before a simulated sport competition (SSC) designed to create muscle damage and returned the next morning on an overnight flight back home. Both groups demonstrated jet…
Indication Variability in Degenerative Lumbar Spine Surgery: A Four-nation Survey.
2017
Electronic survey. The aim of this study was to identify the international nuances in surgical treatment patterns for severals lumbar degenerative conditions, specifically, to identify differences in responses in each country groupand different treatment trends across countries.Significant variations in treatment of lumbar degenerative conditions exist among spine surgeons, related to the lack of established consensus in the literature. An online survey with preformulated answers was submitted to 52 orthopedic surgeons, 50 neurosurgeons from four different countries (United States, France, Spain, and Germany) regarding five vignette-cases. Cases included: multilevel stenosis, monolevel stenos…
Mature Survival Data for 176 Patients Younger Than 60 Years With Primary Myelofibrosis Diagnosed Between 1976 and 2005: Evidence for Survival Gains i…
2009
In the past 20 years, management of primary myelofibrosis (PMF) has incorporated new treatment approaches, but survival benefits have not been confirmed in controlled studies. This retrospective study includes 176 consecutive patients younger than age 60 years in whom PMF was diagnosed during a 30-year period (1976-2005). Median age at diagnosis was 50 years (range, 18-59 years), and 98 patients (55%) were men. At the time of this report, 99 patients (56%) had died; the 77 surviving patients were followed up for a median of 8 years (range, 4-24 years). Overall median survival was 9.2 years, and 15- and 20-year survival rates were 32% and 20%, respectively. According to the Dupriez Prognosti…
Is there a relationship between chocolate consumption and symptoms of depression? A cross-sectional survey of 13,626 US adults
2019
Objective: To examine associations between chocolate consumption and depressive symptoms in a large, representative sample of US adults. Methods: The data were from 13,626 adults (≥20 years) participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2007–08 and 2013–14. Daily chocolate consumption was derived from two 24-hr dietary recalls. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), with scores ≥10 indicating the presence of clinically relevant symptoms. We used multivariable logistic regression to test associations of chocolate consumption (no chocolate, non-dark chocolate, dark chocolate) and amount of chocolate consumption (grams/…
Declining exposures to lead and cadmium contribute to explaining the reduction of cardiovascular mortality in the US population, 1988-2004.
2017
Background Lead and cadmium exposures have markedly declined in the USA following the implementation of large-scale public health policies and could have contributed to the unexplained decline in cardiovascular mortality in US adults. We evaluated the potential contribution of lead and cadmium exposure reductions to explain decreasing cardiovascular mortality trends occurring in the USA from 1988-94 to 1999-2004. Methods Prospective study in 15 421 adults ≥40 years old who had participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1988-94 or 1999-2004. We estimated the amount of change in cardiovascular mortality over time that can be independently attributed to the intermedia…
Recent Trends in Survival of Patients With Pancreatic Cancer in Germany and the United States
2016
Objectives Survival improvement for pancreatic cancer has not been observed in the last 4 decades. We report the most up-to-date population-based relative survival (RS) estimates and recent trends in Germany and the United States. Methods Data for patients diagnosed in 1997 to 2010 and followed up to 2010 were drawn from 12 population-based German cancer registries and the US SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results) 13 registries database. Using period analysis, 5-year RS for 2007 to 2010 was derived. Model-based period analysis was used to assess 5-year RS time trends, 2002-2010. Results In total 28,977 (Germany) and 34,793 (United States) patients aged 15 to 74 years were analyze…
Are negative mood states associated with cognitive function in newly diagnosed patients with epilepsy?
2000
Summary: Purpose: The association of self-reported subclinical depressive symptoms and negative mood states with cognitive functioning was evaluated in 51 consecutive newly diagnosed adult persons with epilepsy. Methods: Emotional state was assessed with Profile of Mood States (POMS) and Brief Depression Scale (BDS) and was correlated with a battery of neuropsychological tests. Results: Patients with epilepsy reported more depressive symptoms in BDS than in controls. They also had more feeling of bewilderment and less vigor on POMS. Higher scores in BDS and in POMS inefficiency scale were associated with slower nondominant hand tapping, but emotional state did not correlate with cognitive m…
Prevalence and characterization of cardiac involvement in Hunter syndrome.
2011
To assess the prevalence of cardiovascular signs and symptoms in a large group of patients with Hunter syndrome, an X-linked metabolic disorder caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme iduronate-2-sulfatase.The Hunter Outcome Survey was established to characterize the natural history of Hunter syndrome and to assess the response to enzyme replacement therapy. Echocardiographic and electrocardiographic examination results were available for 102 patients who were enzyme replacement therapy-naïve in the Hunter Outcome Survey (median age at examination, approximately 8 years) as of Jan 23, 2009.The most common cardiovascular finding was valve disease, which was present in 63% of patients.…
Corpus callosum area in patients with bipolar disorder with and without psychotic features: an international multicentre study
2015
Background Previous studies have reported MRI abnormalities of the corpus callosum (CC) in patients with bipolar disorder (BD), although only a few studies have directly compared callosal areas in psychotic versus nonpsychotic patients with this disorder. We sought to compare regional callosal areas in a large international multicentre sample of patients with BD and healthy controls. Methods We analyzed anatomic T-1 MRI data of patients with BD-I and healthy controls recruited from 4 sites (France, Germany, Ireland and the United States). We obtained the mid-sagittal areas of 7 CC subregions using an automatic CC delineation. Differences in regional callosal areas between patients and contr…
Trends in Sexual Activity and Associations with All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality Among US Adults
2020
Abstract Background Sexual activity can be referred to as a health behavior and may also act as an indicator of health status. Aim To evaluate temporal trends in sexual activity and to examine associations of sexual activity with all-cause and cause-specific mortality risk. Methods We examined the trends and prevalence of sexual activity and association of sexual activity with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in a nationally representative sample using data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2016 and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2014 Linked Mortality File (through December 31, 2015). Outcomes All-cause, cardiovascular…
