Multivariate statistical technique over QoS variables to analyze video quality metrics on IEEE 802.11ac networks
2017
[EN] We present the results from a measurementbasedperformance evaluation of wireless networks basedon IEEE 802.11ac standard in an indoor environment, withthe aim to analyze their performance under high definitionstreaming video applications. We focus our study on analyzingthe highest performance of these standards using off-theshelfequipment as well as the behavior of Quality of Servicevariables and how they affect to the video quality. Thus, wehave analyzed and measured these variables and have applieda multivariate statistical technique, called Factor Analysis, and finally discuss their behavior.
What should I do next? Using shared representations to solve interaction problems
2011
Studies on how “the social mind” works reveal that cognitive agents engaged in joint actions actively estimate and influence another’s cognitive variables and form shared representations with them. (How) do shared representations enhance coordination? In this paper, we provide a probabilistic model of joint action that emphasizes how shared representations help solving interaction problems. We focus on two aspects of the model. First, we discuss how shared representations permit to coordinate at the level of cognitive variables (beliefs, intentions, and actions) and determine a coherent unfolding of action execution and predictive processes in the brains of two agents. Second, we discuss th…
The Ground State Electronic Energy of Benzene.
2020
We report on the findings of a blind challenge devoted to determining the frozen-core, full configuration interaction (FCI) ground state energy of the benzene molecule in a standard correlation-consistent basis set of double-$\zeta$ quality. As a broad international endeavour, our suite of wave function-based correlation methods collectively represents a diverse view of the high-accuracy repertoire offered by modern electronic structure theory. In our assessment, the evaluated high-level methods are all found to qualitatively agree on a final correlation energy, with most methods yielding an estimate of the FCI value around $-863$ m$E_{\text{H}}$. However, we find the root-mean-square devia…
On the correction of conserved variables for numerical RMHD with staggered constrained transport
2015
Despite the success of the combination of conservative schemes and staggered constrained transport algorithms in the last fifteen years, the accurate description of highly magnetized, relativistic flows with strong shocks represents still a challenge in numerical RMHD. The present paper focusses in the accuracy and robustness of several correction algorithms for the conserved variables, which has become a crucial ingredient in the numerical simulation of problems where the magnetic pressure dominates over the thermal pressure by more than two orders of magnitude. Two versions of non-relativistic and fully relativistic corrections have been tested and compared using a magnetized cylindrical …
Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
2009
Bioinformatics is a new, rapidly expanding field that uses computational approaches to answer biological questions (Baxevanis, 2005). These questions are answered by means of analyzing and mining biological data. The field of bioinformatics or computational biology is a multidisciplinary research and development environment, in which a variety of techniques from computer science, applied mathematics, linguistics, physics, and, statistics are used. The terms bioinformatics and computational biology are often used interchangeably (Baldi, 1998; Pevzner, 2000). This new area of research is driven by the wealth of data from high throughput genome projects, such as the human genome sequencing pro…
Peer Group Mentoring Programmes in Finnish Higher Education––Mentors’ Perspectives
2014
Peer mentoring is one of the most important guidance practices for first-year students entering higher education and academic life. We are interested in mentors’ roles and apply the ideas of group counseling in order to increase the understanding of peer mentoring. Other aspects of guidance––content, methods, and collaboration––are approached on the basis of the holistic career guidance model. The data were gathered via an online questionnaire (n = 784) from 20 Finnish HE institutions. The results show that peer mentoring is a positive experience. The main emphasis is on the personal, psychosocial aspects of the student’s life. We identified four mentor types based on used activities. The e…
Concept Drift Detection Using Online Histogram-Based Bayesian Classifiers
2016
In this paper, we present a novel algorithm that performs online histogram-based classification, i.e., specifically designed for the case when the data is dynamic and its distribution is non-stationary. Our method, called the Online Histogram-based Naïve Bayes Classifier (OHNBC) involves a statistical classifier based on the well-established Bayesian theory, but which makes some assumptions with respect to the independence of the attributes. Moreover, this classifier generates a prediction model using uni-dimensional histograms, whose segments or buckets are fixed in terms of their cardinalities but dynamic in terms of their widths. Additionally, our algorithm invokes the principles of info…
Magnetic order in 2D antiferromagnets revealed by spontaneous anisotropic magnetostriction
2023
The temperature dependent order parameter provides important information on the nature of magnetism. Using traditional methods to study this parameter in two-dimensional (2D) magnets remains difficult, however, particularly for insulating antiferromagnetic (AF) compounds. Here, we show that its temperature dependence in AF MPS$_{3}$ (M(II) = Fe, Co, Ni) can be probed via the anisotropy in the resonance frequency of rectangular membranes, mediated by a combination of anisotropic magnetostriction and spontaneous staggered magnetization. Density functional calculations followed by a derived orbital-resolved magnetic exchange analysis confirm and unravel the microscopic origin of this magnetiza…
Quantum rescaling, domain metastability and hybrid domain-walls in two-dimensional CrI3 magnets
2020
Higher-order exchange interactions and quantum effects are widely known to play an important role in describing the properties of low-dimensional magnetic compounds. Here we identify the recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) CrI3 as a quantum non-Heisenberg material with properties far beyond an Ising magnet as initially assumed. We find that biquadratic exchange interactions are essential to quantitatively describe the magnetism of CrI3 but requiring quantum rescaling corrections to reproduce its thermal properties. The quantum nature of the heat bath represented by discrete electron-spin and phonon-spin scattering processes induced the formation of spin fluctuations…
Speeding up of microstructure reconstruction: II. Application to patterns of poly-dispersed islands
2015
We report a fast, efficient and credible statistical reconstruction of any two-phase patterns of islands of miscellaneous shapes and poly-dispersed in sizes. In the proposed multi-scale approach called a weighted doubly-hybrid, two different pairs of hybrid descriptors are used. As the first pair, we employ entropic quantifiers, while correlation functions are the second pair. Their competition allows considering a wider spectrum of morphological features. Instead of a standard random initial configuration, a synthetic one with the same number of islands as that of the target is created by a cellular automaton. This is the key point for speeding-up of microstructure reconstruction, making u…
