Blood Volume Substitutes in Emergency Care

1985

Volume substitutes for restoring circulating blood volume are eminently important for emergency care. In addition to side effects, the intravascular volume effect immediately after infusion and the duration of this volume effect are determining factors for the selection of volume replacement solutions available on the market today. Therefore, we controlled the intravascular volume effect of 16 test solutions, immediately as well as 90 and 240 min after the end of infusion.

Low back pain in workers. Occupational risk and related variables

2019

ABSTRACT Introduction: Low back pain is a prevalent condition with health, social and occupational impact. The aim of this study is to assess the influence of social and occupational factors on worker patients with low back pain. Method: A descriptive study was conducted on 349 subjects with low back pain. The main independent variable was being a manual or non-manual worker. Other social-occupational and lifestyle variables were also considered. The level of disability was established according to the Oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire, and the association between the type of job and the test was evaluated using multiple linear regressions. Results: Manual workers are heavier …

Emotional status and fear in patients scheduled for elective surgery during COVID-19 pandemic: a nationwide cross-sectional survey (COVID-SURGERY)

2021

Abstract Background Fragmented data exist on the emotional and psychological distress generated by hospital admission during the pandemic in specific populations of patients, and no data exists on patients scheduled for surgery. The aim of this multicentre nationwide prospective cross-sectional survey was to evaluate the impact of pandemic on emotional status and fear of SARS-CoV-2 contagion in a cohort of elective surgical patients in Italy, scheduled for surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results Twenty-nine Italian centres were involved in the study, for a total of 2376 patients surveyed (mean age of 58 years ± 16.61; 49.6% males). The survey consisted of 28 total closed questions, in…

Epidemiological Characterization and Determination of TP53 and IGHV Mutational Status of a Large Series of Previously-Untreated Chronic Lymphocytic L…

2021

Abstract Introduction: Among the genetic lesions described in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), TP53 and IGHV mutational status are well-established prognostic biomarkers. While mutations resulting in dysregulation of TP53 are associated with chemo-resistance, mutated IGHV (IGHV-M) identifies a good prognosis and unmutated (IGHV-UM) is associated with an aggressive clinical outcome. Thus, molecular assessment of TP53 and IGHV mutational status is recommended to make treatment decisions. Moreover, 30% of CLL patients have a highly homologous complementarity-determining region 3 (CDR3), allowing their classification in subsets based on the stereotypical B-cell receptor immunoglobulins (BcR …

Incidence of mandibular fractures in eastern Libya

2009

The objective of this retrospective study is to evaluate the incidence of mandibular fractures in the eastern part of Libya and to present our experience in treating this type of facial fracture. We analyzed factors such as the incidence of age, sex, time distribution, cause and site of the fracture and the associated injuries in 493 patients presenting a total of 666 mandibular fractures. These patients were treated at Al-Jala Trauma Hospital, Benghazi-Libya between 2000 and 2006. The results were obtained from 432 males and 61 females, for which the ages ranged from 8 months to 72 years. The maximum number of the patients was recorded in 2004, and the busiest month was May. The most commo…

237 Selected global health assessment tools significantly predict postoperative clinical outcome in elderly patients with ovarian cancer

2021

Introduction/Background* This study evaluated the impact of the global health status on the rate of postoperative clinical complications in patients with ovarian cancer (OC) older than 60 years. Methodology Selected global health status assessment tools were retrospectively determined in a cohort of OC patients older than 60 years, treated at our institution between 2008 and 2019. The primary outcome was the incidence and type of postoperative clinical complications in accordance with the Veteran Affairs’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). Differences in binary and ordinal variables between independent groups were analyzed by the chi-square test. Furthermore, rank correl…

“Small Volume Resuscitation” as Treatment of Cerebral Blood Flow Disturbances and Increased ICP in Trauma and Ischemia

1996

“Small volume resuscitation” (SVR) is a promising concept for the treatment of shock and trauma patients. SVR utilizes the fast infusion of a small volume of hypertonic saline to mobilize intraendothelial and parenchymal water to expand and restitute intravascular volume. Therefore it seems warranted to also consider SVR for the treatment of disturbances of the cerebral circulation and of increased intracranial pressure (ICP). The current study uses a rabbit model of global cerebral ischemia combined with mild hemorrhage to test SVR. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) serve as a short-term outcome parameter. The data demonstrate a beneficial effect on ICP, a better reperfusion, and an i…

The Cost of Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) in Europe and USA: The GAIN Study

2019

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common chronic liver disorders. The progressive form of NAFLD, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), leads to cirrhosis in a proportion of patients and so is associated with a substantial socio-economic burden which, coupled with a steadily rising prevalence, is becoming a growing public health challenge. The Global Assessment of the Impact of NASH (GAIN) study is a socioeconomic, prevalence-based burden of illness study across Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) and the United States to determine the socio-economic burden of NASH in the real-world. Methods: GAIN was a retrospective, cross-sec…

Nutritional Support After Surgery of the Esophagus

2019

Surgery of the esophagus may be indicated for benign and malignant pathologies. Esophageal cancer represents the most frequent indication for surgical treatment, and the important nutritional concern arisen in relationship between cancer, surgery, and nutritional status of operated oncological patients has been explored by a vast scientific literature. Among benign pathologies indicating surgery involving the esophagus, achalasia has been largely studied, with surgery representing one of several effective therapeutic options.
