Abstract Within the framework of the Work Package Divertor, Subproject: Cassette Design and Integration (WPDIV-Cassette) of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by ENEA and University of Palermo to investigate the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system. A parallel splitting up method and its application to Navier-Stokes equations

A parallel splitting-up method (or the so called alternating-direction method) is proposed in this paper. The method not only reduces the original linear and nonlinear problems into a series of one dimensional linear problems, but also enables us to compute all these one dimensional linear problems by parallel processors. Instability and bistability during the growth of a corrosion scale on metals and alloys

This paper summarizes the main results for the interpretation of the self organized corrosion scales observed in oxidation or sulfidation of some metals or alloys. It consists also of a reconsideration of the classical theoretical concepts used in Reactivity of Solids. It proposes new theoretical tools that have been fruitfully utilized in other topics : non linear and coupled processes, stability analysis and bifurcation theory. Nonlinear Thermal Transport with Inertia in Thin Wires: Thermal Fronts and Steady States

Abstract In a series of papers we have obtained results for nonlinear heat transport when thin wires exchange heat non-linearly with the surroundings, with particular attention to propagating solitons. Here we obtain and discuss new results related to the propagation of nonlinear heat fronts and some conceptual aspects referring to the application of the second principle of thermodynamics to some nonlinear steady states related to non-propagating solitons.

Technical challenges in the construction of the steady-state stellarator Wendelstein 7-X

The next step in the Wendelstein stellarator line is the large superconducting device Wendelstein 7-X, currently under construction in Greifswald, Germany. Steady-state operation is an intrinsic feature of stellarators, and one key element of the Wendelstein 7-X mission is to demonstrate steady-state operation under plasma conditions relevant for a fusion power plant. Bidirectional laser cavity solitons

Cavity solitons in optical systems have been studied for two decades in a large variety of optical systems. In principle, bidirectional lasers can emit only unidirectionally in steady state, as the two-mode solution (non null steady state in the two possible emission directions) is an unstable solution (winner-takes-all competition prevents the bidirectional cw emission). But for a wide aperture cavity this is not necessarily true as, in different regions of the transverse (with respect to the propagation axis) direction, emission in different propagation directions could occur if the fronts separating these domains are stable. Steady state γ-ray radiation effects on Brillouin fiber sensors

International audience; Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensors offer remarkable advantages for the surveillance of the planned French deep geological radioactive wastes repository, called Cigéo1,2. In this work we study the performances of Brillouin distributed sensors in harsh environment. We evaluate the radiation tolerance of different sensor classes and their responses evolution during γ-ray exposition with 1kGy/h dose rate (to reach ~0.2MGy) and after 1, 3, 6 and 10 MGy accumulated doses.
