Intraosseous anesthesia with solution injection controlled by a computerized system versus conventional oral anesthesia : a preliminary study
2011
Objective: To compare a computerized intraosseous anesthesia system with the conventional oral anesthesia techniques, and analyze the latency and duration of the anesthetic effect and patient preference. Design: A simple-blind prospective study was made between March 2007 and May 2008. Each patient was subjected to two anesthetic techniques: conventional and intraosseous using the Quicksleeper® system (DHT, Cholet, France). A split-mouth design was adopted in which each patient underwent treatment of a tooth with one of the techniques, and treatment of the homologous contralateral tooth with the other technique. The treatments consisted of restorations, endodontic procedures and simple extr…
Texture analysis in susceptibility-weighted imaging may be useful to differentiate acute from chronic multiple sclerosis lesions.
2020
To evaluate the diagnostic performance of texture analysis (TA) applied on non-contrast-enhanced susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) to differentiate acute (enhancing) from chronic (non-enhancing) multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions. We analyzed 175 lesions from 58 patients with relapsing-remitting MS imaged on a 3.0 T MRI scanner and applied TA on T2-w and SWI images to extract texture features. We evaluated the presence or absence of lesion enhancement on T1-w post-contrast images and performed a computational statistical analysis to assess if there was any significant correlation between the texture features and the presence of lesion activity. ROC curves and leave-one-out cross-validation…
Solid bone tumors of the spine: Diagnostic performance of apparent diffusion coefficient measured using diffusion-weighted MRI using histology as a r…
2017
Purpose To assess the diagnostic performance of mean apparent diffusion coefficient (mADC) in differentiating benign from malignant bone spine tumors, using histology as a reference standard. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences have good reliability in evaluating spinal bone tumors, although some features of benign and malignant cancers may overlap, making the differential diagnosis challenging. Materials and Methods In all, 116 patients (62 males, 54 females; mean age 59.5 ± 14.1) with biopsy-proven spinal bone tumors were studied. Field strength/sequences: 1.5T MR system; T1-weighted turbo spin-echo (repetition time / echo time [TR/TE], 500/13 msec; number of excitatio…
Cigarette smoking affects uterine receptiveness
2006
Background Cigarette smoking has long been known to have an effect on female fertility. The existence of an ovarian factor is clear when one considers that the mean age of the menopause is lower and IVF cycle outcome is worse in heavy smokers. The hypothesis of a concomitant uterine effect is raised by indirect evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies, but as yet, no direct evidence has been gained to confirm its existence. In this work, we analyse the association between smoking habit in oocyte recipients and cycle outcome. Methods We have retrospectively analysed the outcome of all oocyte donation cycles performed in our clinic from January 2002 to June 2005 from which there was availab…
Egg donation, surrogate mothering, and cloning: attitudes of men and women in Germany based on a representative survey
2009
Objective To determine opinions and attitudes of the German general population toward the treatment methods of reproductive medicine: egg donation, surrogate mothering, and reproductive cloning. Design Representative survey. Setting German general population: face-to-face interviews at home with 2,110 persons, aged 18–50 years. Patient(s) Patients were not included. Intervention(s) No interventions took place. Main Outcome Measure(s) Approval and disapproval of treatment methods of reproductive medicine and preimplantation genetic diagnosis were assessed by questionnaires regarding medical, age, reasons, or general. Result(s) Overall, the diverse treatment methods of reproductive medicine f…
Evidence of unilateral isolated utricular hypofunction
2010
The findings demonstrate that an enduring unilateral utricular dysfunction, possibly together with canal hypofunction, can occur after labyrinthine disease or injury. They also suggest that unilateral, isolated utricular dysfunction - or utricle paresis - can occur, representing a novel entity in the differential diagnosis of peripheral vestibular function. The occurrence of subjective visual vertical (SVV) asymmetry in the presence of symmetric vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) also confirms that the information from the utricles, rather than the saccules, dominates SVV estimation. To determine the incidence of unilateral utricular hypofunction. The retrospective clinical study d…
Global and regional cortical thinning in first-episode psychosis patients: relationships with clinical and cognitive features
2010
BackgroundThe thickness of the cortical mantle is a sensitive measure for identifying alterations in cortical structure. We aimed to explore whether first episode schizophrenia patients already show a significant cortical thinning and whether cortical thickness anomalies may significantly influence clinical and cognitive features.MethodWe investigated regional changes in cortical thickness in a large and heterogeneous sample of schizophrenia spectrum patients (n=142) at their first break of the illness and healthy controls (n=83). Magnetic resonance imaging brain scans (1.5 T) were obtained and images were analyzed by using brains2. The contribution of sociodemographic, cognitive and clinic…
Fragment reconstruction of coronary arteries using transesophageal echocardiography for coronary diagnostics
2008
Aims Ultrasound differs procedurally from the established methods for non-invasive coronary visualization and is therefore an interesting alternative for non-invasive diagnostics. In this study, fragment reconstruction of coronary arteries by transesophageal echocardiography (FRC-TEE) was investigated for the first time in a patient population being evaluated for coronary angiography. Methods and results Ultrasonic and angiographic findings were compared visually and using quantitative measurements in 50 patients. One hundred and seventy-one vessels were examined by FRC-TEE. The total lengths visualized were 9.6+ 1.7 cm for the right coronary artery, 7.0+ 1.1 cm for left circumflex, 3.9+ 1.…
Influence of age and sex on aortic distensibility assessed by MRI in healthy subjects
2010
International audience; Abstract: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is particularly well adapted to the evaluation of aortic distensibility. The calculation of this parameter, based on the change in vessel cross-sectional area per unit change in blood pressure, requires precise delineation of the aortic wall on a series of cine-MR images. Firstly, the study consisted in validating a new automatic method to assess aortic elasticity. Secondly, aortic distensibility was studied for the ascending and descending thoracic aortas in 26 healthy subjects. Two homogeneous groups were available to evaluate the influence of sex and age (with an age limit value of 35 years). The automatic postprocessing …
Mentally represented motor actions in normal aging: III. Electromyographic features of imagined arm movements.
2009
Abstract Motor imagery is a cognitive process during which subjects mentally simulate movements without actually performing them. Here, we investigated the temporal and electromyographic (EMG) features of imagined arm movements in healthy elderly adults. Twelve young (mean age: 24.0 ± 1.3 years) and 12 elderly (mean age: 67.0 ± 4.5 years) participants executed and mentally simulated, with their right and left arms and as fast and as accurately as possible, arm pointing movements between three targets located in the frontal plane. We used the mental chronometry paradigm as an indicator of the accuracy of the motor imagery process (i.e. isochrony between executed and imagined movements) and t…
