La tutela dell'ambiente come diritto della persona
2021
In this essay the author proposes a reconstruction of the environment as a right of the person and of environmental damage as an existential damage aimed at filling that void of protection in environmental matters denounced by the internal and European courts. In particular, in the Italian legal system, the absence of remedies that allow the individual affected person to obtain compensation protection reveals, on the basis of current legislation, within the Italian legal system, a dangerous vacuum of protection. According to the author, the legitimacy of the injured party could be derived from a parallel reconstruction of the environmental damage that, regardless of the legislative configur…
Particle size-related limitations of persistent phosphors based on the doped Y3Al2Ga3O12 system
2021
AbstractCo-doped Ce3+, Cr3+ and Pr3+ yttrium–aluminium–gallium garnet powders of various sizes were obtained by co-precipitation method. The microstructure and morphology were investigated by XRPD, TEM and gas porosimetry. The luminescence properties were studied by excitation and emission spectra, quantum yield and decay times. Thermoluminescence measurements were performed to evaluate the activation energy, traps redistribution and frequency factor. Limitation in the energy transfer between dopant ions in the small particles, traps depth and surface defects were considered and investigated as responsible for the quenching of persistent luminescence. The phosphors annealed at 1100 °C show …
Experimental characterization of the RFID STENTag for passive vascular monitoring
2012
The possibility to monitor biological process in evolution and in particular the state of implanted devices such as vascular stent, has been recently proposed as one of the most challenging and fascinating application of the RFID passive technology. However, several issues are still in question and need to be analyzed in order to evaluate the real medical and sensing effectiveness of the proposed implantable radio sensor. The aim of this work is to experimentally evaluate the robustness of the RFID platform, its accuracy and its reproducibility as well as the effectiveness of the proposed sensing approach in term of human variability and pathology evolution.
Pervasive body sensing: Implanted RFID tags for vascular monitoring
2010
Beside the common logistic usages of the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, one of the most innovative and promising applications is the possibility to process the backscattering signals to detect additional information about the target, such as its state and its evolution, without any specific embedded sensor or local power supply. The rationale of this idea lies in the clear dependence of the tag's input impedance and reflectivity on the physical and geometrical features of a real target. When the object where the tag is attached on undergoes some changes along with the time, the tag's electrical features also change and these variations can be remotely detected by the read…
Simultaneous occurrence of covert infections with small RNA viruses in the lepidopteran Spodoptera exigua
2014
Viral covert infections in invertebrates have been traditionally attributed to sublethal infections that were not able to establish an acute infection. Recent studies are revealing that, although true for some viruses, other viruses may follow the strategy of establishing covert or persistent infections without producing the death of the host. Recently, and due to the revolution in the sequencing technologies, a large number of viruses causing covert infections in all type of hosts have been identified. The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a worldwide pest that causes significant losses to agricultural and ornamental plant industries. In a previous project we used…
Contextuality Analysis of the Double Slit Experiment (With a Glimpse Into Three Slits)
2018
The Contextuality-by-Default theory is illustrated on contextuality analysis of the idealized double-slit experiment. The experiment is described by a system of contextually labeled binary random variables each of which answers the question: has the particle hit the detector, having passed through a given slit (left or right) in a given state (open or closed)? This system of random variables is a cyclic system of rank 4, formally the same as the system describing the EPR/Bell paradigm with signaling. Unlike the latter, however, the system describing the double-slit experiment is always noncontextual, i.e., the context-dependence in it is entirely explainable in terms of direct influences of…

The cognitive neuropsychology of recollection
2013
The recognition of whether someone, something or somewhere has been experienced before rests on a decisionmaking process. In humanmemory, information is not reproduced as it would be in a computer, but is a reflective, conscious process. This is more so the case when encountering the same scene, environment or idea for a second time. When we recognize something as having been encountered before we arguably make a comparison between what is represented in the cognitive system and what is currently perceived. Consider that somebody uses the word ‘loquacious’, a word which you have only just encountered recently, and up until then, you did not know its meaning, or even existence. When encounte…
Endoscopic treatment of intraluminal ureteral suture with holmium laser
2021
Although reconstructive surgery is the most accepted treatment for ureteral injury, there are reports of cases where endourologic treatment led to correct resolution of the problem. We present the case of a female patient aged 72-year-old who was previously underwent sacralcolpopexy because of anterior vaginal compartment prolapse. The patient underwent surgery to remove the mesh, due to the pain she had had since it was placed. A mid-line laparotomy was performed removing completely the mesh. At 48 hours after intervention, the patient started feeling an intense pain in the left renal fossa that was not relieved with anti-inflammatories and morphic drugs. In the diagnostic ureteroscopy, it…
Dataset of a globally relevant stock of soil nitrogen in the Yedoma permafrost domain
2022
This dataset merges nitrogen data from the Yedoma domain. It includes numerous fieldwork campaigns, which take place since 1998. In total 467 samples from the active layer (seasonally thawed layer), 175 samples from perennially frozen Holocene cover deposits, 479 samples from thermokarst deposits in drained thermokarst, 175 in-situ thawed, diagenetically (anaerobic microbial decomposition possible during unfrozen phase) altered Yedoma deposits (called Taberite), and 917 samples from frozen Yedoma deposits are included. Moreover it includes a NH4+ and NO3- quantification basing on of 658 samples, including 378 data points for NH4+ (active layer, 93; Holocene cover, 108; thermokarst sediment,…
