Prior research indicates that when we shared a part of a social identity with others, we tend to include or exclude them from our in-group depending on their success and failure. In this research, we investigated the extent to which this strategy (i.e., MOATing, “moving others away/toward the in-group”) is used for self-enhancement as compared to self-protection. Our experiment included a stereotype measure that assessed whether others were perceived as more typical of the in-group or the out-group. The results generally replicate those of prior research and suggest that MOATing primarily serves a self-enhancement function. We discuss theoretical and methodological implications.

W artykule nakreślono możliwe reperkusje większej obecności przedstawicieli islamu w Europie na początku XXI stulecia . Odsetek muzułmanów w Europie wzrósł z 2% w 1950 r. do 6% w 2020 roku. W recepcji nowej fali napływu muzułman na Stary kontynent przedstawiono przewidywalne konsekwencje. Rozważono zaistnienie dwu scenariuszy. Desde finales de los años 50 hasta la crisis del petróleo en 1973, el desarrollo económico de Alemania precisó de una enorme afluencia de mano obrera inmigrante. El paro y la pobreza llevaron a muchos españoles a buscar mejores condiciones de vida en la emigración a Europa, fomentados además desde las instancias oficiales. El encuentro entre ambas culturas frecuentemente iba acompañado de un complicado proceso de adaptación a los países receptores e hizo aflorar diversos prejuicios, estereotipos y autoestereotipos que esta ponencia pretende analizar con la ayuda de material documental.
