Solar neutrino detectors as sterile neutrino hunters

2016

International audience; The large size and the very low radioactive background of solar neutrino detectors such as Borexino at the Gran Sasso Laboratory in Italy offer a unique opportunity to probe the existence of neutrino oscillations into new sterile components by means of carefully designed and well calibrated anti-neutrino and neutrino artificial sources. In this paper we briefly summarise the key elements of the SOX experiment, a program for the search of sterile neutrinos (and other short distance effects) by means of a (144)Ce-(144)Pr anti-neutrino source and, possibly in the medium term future, with a (51)Cr neutrino source.

Isocurvature Constraints on Portal Couplings

2016

We consider portal models which are ultraweakly coupled with the Standard Model, and confront them with observational constraints on dark matter abundance and isocurvature perturbations. We assume the hidden sector to contain a real singlet scalar $s$ and a sterile neutrino $\psi$ coupled to $s$ via a pseudoscalar Yukawa term. During inflation, a primordial condensate consisting of the singlet scalar $s$ is generated, and its contribution to the isocurvature perturbations is imprinted onto the dark matter abundance. We compute the total dark matter abundance including the contributions from condensate decay and nonthermal production from the Standard Model sector. We then use the Planck lim…

Toxics or Lures? Biological and Behavioral Effects of Plant Essential Oils on Tephritidae Fruit Flies.

2021

The family Tephritidae (Diptera) includes species that are highly invasive and harmful to crops. Due to globalization, international trade, and human displacement, their spread is continuously increasing. Unfortunately, the control of tephritid flies is still closely linked to the use of synthetic insecticides, which are responsible for detrimental effects on the environment and human health. Recently, research is looking for alternative and more eco-friendly tools to be adopted in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. In this regard, essential oils (EOs) and their main compounds represent a promising alternative to chemical insecticides. EOs are made up of phytoconstituents formed fro…

Novel RNA viruses producing simultaneous covert infections in Ceratitis capitata. Correlations between viral titers and host fitness, and implication…

2017

The Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata is a highly polyphagous pest, which infests multiple species of fruits and vegetables worldwide. In addition to the traditional control with chemical insecticides, sterile insect technique (SIT) has been implemented in integrated programs worldwide, and has become an essential measure for the control of this pest. A key issue for SIT is to release sterile males that are sufficiently competitive with males from the wild population. Using sequence information available in public databases, three novel picornaviruses infecting medflies were discovered and named as C. capitata iflavirus 1 and 2 (CcaIV1 and CcaIV2), and C. capitata noravir…

Role of bacteria-specific T cells in the immunopathogenesis of reactive arthritis.

1994

Reactive arthritis is a usually self-limited sterile inflammation of joints that follows certain bacterial gastrointestinal or urogenital infections. The immunopathogenesis involves CD4+ T cells, which mediate an antigen-specific TH1 response to bacterial constituents within the joint. Properties of the arthritogenic bacteria and the physicochemical characteristics of the bacterial antigens may contribute to the development of reactive arthritis.

Determination of the θ23 octant in long baseline neutrino experiments within and beyond the standard model

2018

The recent data indicate that the neutrino mixing angle θ 23 deviates from the maximal-mixing value of 45°, showing two nearly degenerate solutions, one in the lower octant (LO) ( θ 23 4 5 ° ). We investigate, using numerical simulations, the prospects for determining the octant of θ 23 in the future long baseline oscillation experiments. We present our results as contour plots on the ( θ 23 − 4 5 ° , δ )–plane, where δ is the C P phase, showing the true values of θ 23 for which the octant can be experimentally determined at 3 σ , 2 σ and 1 σ confidence level. In particular, we study the impact of the possible nonunitarity of neutrino mixing on the experimental determination of θ 23 in thos…

Statistical sensitivity of the nEDM apparatus at PSI to n − n′ oscillations

2018

The neutron and its hypothetical mirror counterpart, a sterile state degenerate in mass, could spontaneously mix in a process much faster than the neutron β-decay. Two groups have performed a series of experiments in search of neutron – mirror-neutron (n − n′) oscillations. They reported no evidence, thereby setting stringent limits on the oscillation time τnn′. Later, these data sets have been further analyzed by Berezhiani et al.(2009–2017), and signals, compatible with n − n′ oscillations in the presence of mirror magnetic fields, have been reported. The Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Collaboration based at the Paul Scherrer Institute performed a new series of experiments to further test…

Light Composite Higgs from Higher Representations versus Electroweak Precision Measurements -- Predictions for LHC

2005

We investigate theories in which the technifermions in higher dimensional representations of the technicolor gauge group dynamically break the electroweak symmetry of the standard model. For the two-index symmetric representation of the gauge group the lowest number of techniflavors needed to render the underlying gauge theory quasi conformal is two. We confront the models with the recent electroweak precision measurements and demonstrate that the two technicolor theory is a valid candidate for a dynamical breaking of the electroweak symmetry. The electroweak precision measurements provide useful constraints on the relative mass splitting of the new leptons needed to cure the Witten anomaly…

Supernova bounds on resonant active-sterile neutrino conversions

1997

We discuss the effects of resonant $\nu_e \to \nu_s$ and $\bar{\nu}_e \to \bar{\nu}_s$ ($\nu_s$ is a sterile neutrino) conversions in the dense medium of a supernova. In particular, we assume the sterile neutrino $\nu_s$ to be in the hot dark matter few eV mass range. The implications of such a scenario for the supernova shock re-heating, the detected $\bar\nu_e$ signal from SN1987A and for the r-process nucleosynthesis hypothesis are analysed in some detail. The resulting constraints on mixing and mass difference for the $\nu_e-\nu_s$ system are derived. There is also an allowed region in the neutrino parameter space for which the r-process nucleosynthesis can be enhanced.
