On rural development of NUTS 2 and 3: a non parametric approach of distribution dynamics analysis

2008

This work presents a study about dynamics of territorial gaps in agriculture between EU NUTS 2 and 3 from three perspectives: agricultural production model, rural development and productivity. Our choice of methodology is driven by two considerations. First of all, different performances in agriculture of EU areas may lead to multimodal distributions of indicators, and this implies that no significant average behaviour a parametric estimates refers to can be identified. Secondly, even if one wants to highlight multimodality within distributions, techniques like univariate density estimates can not catch intra-distribution dynamics which lead to the formation of "poles" of units showing a "s…

Modelling Bacterial Dynamics in Food Products: Role of Environmental Noise and Interspecific Competition

2013

In this paper we review some results obtained within the context of the predictive microbiology, which is a specific field of the population dynamics. In particular we discuss three models, which exploit tools of statistical mechanics, for bacterial dynamics in food of animal origin. In the first model, the random fluctuating behaviour, experimentally measured, of the temperature is considered. In the second model stochastic differential equations are introduced to take into account the influence of physical and chemical variables, such as temperature, pH and activity water, subject to deterministic and random variations. The third model, which is an extended version of the second one, negl…

Effects of solar irradiance noise on a complex marine trophic web

2022

AbstractThe analysis of experimental data of the solar irradiance, collected on the marine surface, clearly highlights the intrinsic stochasticity of such an environmental parameter. Given this result, effects of randomly fluctuating irradiance on the population dynamics of a marine ecosystem are studied on the basis of the stochastic 0-dimensional biogeochemical flux model. The noisy fluctuations of the irradiance are formally described as a multiplicative Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, that is a self-correlated Gaussian noise. Nonmonotonic behaviours of the variance of the marine populations’ biomass are found with respect to the intensity and the autocorrelation time of the noise source, ma…

Effective target arrangement in a deterministic scale-free graph

2010

We study the random walk problem on a deterministic scale-free network, in the presence of a set of static, identical targets; due to the strong inhomogeneity of the underlying structure the mean first-passage time (MFPT), meant as a measure of transport efficiency, is expected to depend sensitively on the position of targets. We consider several spatial arrangements for targets and we calculate, mainly rigorously, the related MFPT, where the average is taken over all possible starting points and over all possible paths. For all the cases studied, the MFPT asymptotically scales like N^{theta}, being N the volume of the substrate and theta ranging from (1 - log 2/log3), for central target(s)…

Bond-based 3D-chiral linear indices: Theory and QSAR applications to central chirality codification

2008

The recently introduced non-stochastic and stochastic bond-based linear indices are been generalized to codify chemical structure information for chiral drugs, making use of a trigonometric 3D-chirality correction factor. These improved modified descriptors are applied to several well-known data sets to validate each one of them. Particularly, Cramer's steroid data set has become a benchmark for the assessment of novel quantitative structure activity relationship methods. This data set has been used by several researchers using 3D-QSAR approaches such as Comparative Molecular Field Analysis, Molecular Quantum Similarity Measures, Comparative Molecular Moment Analysis, E-state, Mapping Prope…

Hadamard NMR imaging with slice selection

1996

Stochastic NMR imaging is one of the less common NMR imaging techniques. Nevertheless, stochastic rf excitation is characterized by some remarkable features: the rf excitation power is at least two orders of magnitude lower in comparison to conventionally pulsed NMR imaging schemes. Thus, the technique is of interest for imaging of large objects. The systematic noise inherent in images obtained with random noise excitation has been eliminated by using pseudorandom noise together with Hadamard transformation for data evaluation. Data acquisition times are comparable to those of ultrafast imaging techniques. For slice selection, z magnetization is destroyed outside the slice region with speci…

Experimental and numerical study of noise effects in a FitzHugh-Nagumo system driven by a biharmonic signal

2013

Using a nonlinear circuit ruled by the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations, we experimentally investigate the combined effect of noise and a biharmonic driving of respective high and low frequency F and f. Without noise, we show that the response of the circuit to the low frequency can be maximized for a critical amplitude B of the high frequency via the effect of Vibrational Resonance (V.R.). We report that under certain conditions on the biharmonic stimulus, white noise can induce V.R. The effects of colored noise on V.R. are also discussed by considering an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. All experimental results are confirmed by numerical analysis of the system response.

Adaptive sparse representation of continuous input for tsetlin machines based on stochastic searching on the line

2021

This paper introduces a novel approach to representing continuous inputs in Tsetlin Machines (TMs). Instead of using one Tsetlin Automaton (TA) for every unique threshold found when Booleanizing continuous input, we employ two Stochastic Searching on the Line (SSL) automata to learn discriminative lower and upper bounds. The two resulting Boolean features are adapted to the rest of the clause by equipping each clause with its own team of SSLs, which update the bounds during the learning process. Two standard TAs finally decide whether to include the resulting features as part of the clause. In this way, only four automata altogether represent one continuous feature (instead of potentially h…

A stochastic interspecific competition model to predict the behaviour of Listeria monocytogenes in the fermentation process of a traditional Sicilian…

2008

The present paper discusses the use of modified Lotka-Volterra equations in order to stochastically simulate the behaviour of Listeria monocytogenes and Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) during the fermentation period (168 h) of a typical Sicilian salami. For this purpose, the differential equation system is set considering T, pH and aw as stochastic variables. Each of them is governed by dynamics that involve a deterministic linear decrease as a function of the time t and an "additive noise" term which instantaneously mimics the fluctuations of T, pH and aw. The choice of a suitable parameter accounting for the interaction of LAB on L. monocytogenes as well as the introduction of appropriate nois…
