Energy losses of 252Cf fission fragments in thin foils

Abstract The stopping power of fission fragments from 252Cf(sf) has been measured in thin foils of C, Ni, Au, Al2O3 and Mylar as a function of fragment mass and energy. The chosen stopping materials are frequently used as the backing of sources and targets or entrance windows of gas detectors. The experimental setup allowed registration of velocities of two fission fragments and energy of one of them. In this way fragment masses could be unambiguously determined and the pulse-height defect of the silicon detector verified. Determination of electronic stopping powers of 0.05–1MeV/u 131Xe ions in C-, Ni- and Au-absorbers with calorimetric low temperature detectors

Abstract A new experimental system for precise determination of electronic stopping powers of heavy ions has been set up at the accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla. The new setup, combining an established B-ToF system and an array of calorimetric low temperature detectors (CLTDs), has been used for the determination of electronic stopping powers of 0.05–1 MeV/u 131Xe ions in carbon, nickel and gold. Thereby advantage of the improved linearity and energy resolution of CLTDs as compared to the previously used ionization detector was taken to reduce energy calibration errors and to increase sensitivity for the energy loss determination, in particular at very low energies. New experimental molecular stopping cross section data of Al2O3, for heavy ions

Abstract Molecular stopping cross section data of Al2O3, for heavy ions of 12C, 16O, 28Si, 35Cl, 79Br within the energy range of 0.01–1.0 MeV/nucleon were measured. Both direct transmission and bulk analysis methods were applied. Stopping cross sections were calculated both with the SRIM and MSTAR codes. Evaluation and intercomparison of the new data with the calculated and previously measured ones are reported in this paper.
Stopping power measurement of 48Ca in a broad energy range in solid absorbers

Abstract Stopping power of 48 Ca ions in C, Ni and Au was measured using TOF-E method. The results cover energy range from 0.1 to 5.3 MeV/u (5–250 MeV). The reliability of our experimental method was verified and confirmed by TOF–TOF measurements. The results are compared with theoretical (PASS) and semi empirical (SRIM2003) predictions.
Stopping powers of havar and effective charge for 1.4–3.2 MeV/u 127I-ions

Abstract Stopping powers of havar for 1.4–3.2 MeV/u 127 I-ions have been determined by the transmission technique using two geometrical arrangements. No previous data have been published for havar with this ion. The experimental data are compared with predictions obtained by using Bragg’s additivity rule with various parametrizations of the stopping power found in the literature. The values obtained by the parametrizations underestimate the experimental data by 5–11%. The empirical correction scheme of Thwaites yields values in rather good agreement with the present results, especially at energies above 1.9 MeV/u. Stopping powers of havar for 1.6, 2.3 and 3.2 MeV/u heavy ions

Abstract Stopping powers of havar for 28,30 Si-, 36 Ar-, 54,56 Fe- and 80,84 Kr-ions with energies of 1.6, 2.3 and 3.2 MeV/u have been determined by a transmission technique. Sample foils are exposed to the direct beams. No previous data for havar with these ions have been published. The obtained results are brought together with literature havar data for 1 H-, 4 He-, 7 Li-, 11 B-, 12 C-, 14 N-, 16 O- and 127 I-ions at the same ion velocity. The experimental data are compared with the values predicted by the SRIM-2000 parametrization using Bragg’s rule. Energy loss of 132Xe-ions in thin foils

Abstract The energy loss of 132Xe-ions in C, Al, Ni, Ag, Lu, Au, Pb and Th foils was measured in the energy range from 0.1 to 5 MeV/u using the TOF-E method. The results are compared with previously published data and with the predictions of several computer codes. They include theoretical codes: PASS, CASP, semi-empirical programs: SRIM, LET and the Hubert table predictions.

Search for magnetic monopoles with the MoEDAL forward trapping detector in 2.11 fb −1 of 13 TeV proton–proton collisions at the LHC

We update our previous search for trapped magnetic monopoles in LHC Run 2 using nearly six times more integrated luminosity and including additional models for the interpretation of the data. The MoEDAL forward trapping detector, comprising 222 kg of aluminium samples, was exposed to 2.11 fb−1 of 13 TeV proton–proton collisions near the LHCb interaction point and analysed by searching for induced persistent currents after passage through a superconducting magnetometer. Magnetic charges equal to the Dirac charge or above are excluded in all samples. The results are interpreted in Drell–Yan production models for monopoles with spins 0, 1/2 and 1: in addition to standard point-like couplings, …
Potentially inappropriate prescribing in institutionalised older patients in Spain: the STOPP-START criteria compared with the Beers criteria

Objective: The aims of this study were to identify potentially inappropriate prescribing using the Beers and STOPP criteria. The START criteria were applied to detect prescription omission in the geriatric population. We compared the utility of these criteria in institutionalised older people. Methods: Descriptive study reviewing the medication and clinical records of 81 residents (aged 65 years and more) by pharmacists in a nursing home in the Lleida region (Spain). Results: The mean patients´ age was 84 (SD=8) years, with an average of 5 drugs per resident (total prescriptions: 416 medicines).
