The chapter examines the juridical construction of working woman in Italian cities during the medieval to modern period. In fact, the world of work and production had been generally thought by medieval and early modern jurists to be a sphere best left to self-regulation by the interested parties, an autonomous field, if not quite extraneous to the grand systems of Roman and canon law. Modelling and analysing oriented fibrous structures

Abstract. A mathematical model for fibrous structures using a direction dependent scaling law is presented. The orientation of fibrous nets (e.g. paper) is analysed with a method based on the curvelet transform. The curvelet-based orientation analysis has been tested successfully on real data from paper samples: the major directions of fibrefibre orientation can apparently be recovered. Similar results are achieved in tests on data simulated by the new model, allowing a comparison with ground truth. peerReviewed

This article explores the development of the theme of the Life-giving Spring in Byzantine iconography. The path towards its establishment was initiated at the moment when a representation rule, an original convention was set. Thereafter, because of its diffusion in time and space, the theme became enriched by particular mentalities and sensibilities of the epochs and the communities that adopted it as a form of devotion for the Virgin Theotokos. The employment quality in the sector of home care services raises a number of questions. In this sector, job positions are hard to fill and they meet unattractive working conditions. Overall, the sector is suffering from a rather negative image. This article, through a qualitative study, identifies the differentiation factors of employee satisfaction in terms of employment quality, and the work motivation factors, in an environment that is not always favorable. Pro Bono Publico? Demand for Military Spending Between the World Wars

This article analyzes the demand for military spending in the 1920s and 1930s, based on variables arising from the international system and the selected countries. The main premise is that the military spending was an impure public good, implying that both public and private benefits drove the demand for this type of expenditure. Threats arising from the autocratic states in the 1930s increased these expenditures, and democracies overall tended to spend less. Moreover, the absence of clear international leadership by the USA or UK destabilized the international system and increased military spending, with alliances failing to produce a public good effect. In this dissertation, I study the observance of holy days among the peasantry in the early modern province of Savo, located on the eastern periphery of the Swedish kingdom (today Eastern Finland). I examine the practices, norms and meanings related to the observance of holy days both within and outside the Church, and analyse the changes and continuities in the post-reformation period. As the main sources of the study, I use district court records and visitation records mainly from the period 1639–1712.
