Attempts to re-colonise water insects in German brooks
2009
Attempts were made to reintroduce water insects (five stonefly species and one mayfly species) into several third order streams in Rhineland-Palatine and Hessen, Germany. All these streams had been strongly affected by waste water and rubbish and had lost most of their macroinvertebrates. As a consequence of the installation of several purification plants in the past three decades, water quality has improved. Since no stoneflies returned, 700–1300 eggs of three different species (Isoperla goertzi, I. oxylepis, and I. grammatica) were exposed in the Selz brook (1997). In February 1998 a few larvae and in 1999 about 10,000 eggs of Perla marginata were added in the Walluf brook, and in 1998, 5…
Two-Leg Squat Jumps in Water: An Effective Alternative to Dry Land Jumps
2009
The current study was designed to quantify and compare the kinetic parameters of two-leg squat jumps carried out on dry land, in water and in water using area devices that increase drag force. Twelve junior female handball players who had been competing at national level for the previous two years volunteered to participate in the study. Intensity of the two-leg squat jump was examined using a force plate (9 253-B11, Kistler Instrument AG, Winterthur, Switzerland) in three different conditions: on dry land, in water and in water using devices. An ANOVA with repeated measurements (condition) was applied to establish differences between the three jumps. The results show that peak impact force…
Subglacial bedforms of the Zemgale Ice Lobe, south-eastern Baltic
2015
Abstract Presented in this paper are the results of the mapping of ∼6600 subglacial bedforms of the Zemgale Ice Lobe (ZIL), their composition and internal structure in the south-eastern Baltic region. Topographic maps at scale 1:10,000 were mainly used to map bedforms in Latvia, while a digital elevation model with cell size of 5 m was used for North Central Lithuania. The ZIL operated during the deglaciation of the Late Weichselian Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS), at least in the Middle Lithuanian and North Lithuanian glacial phases, and created a subglacial landform assemblage consisting of glacial lineations such as drumlins, mega-flutings, Mega Scale Glacial Lineations (MSGLs) and transver…
CLIL classroom discourse
2013
Under the label of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) the teaching of curriculum subjects through the medium of a foreign language has become a widely accepted feature in mainstream education systems in Europe and other parts of the world. After contextualizing its subject matter in CLIL research as a whole, this article focuses on research into classroom discourse. In order to unravel the complexities involved, three different takes on CLIL classroom discourse are discussed as an evidence-base for (a) language learning, (b) language use and social-interactional aspects of L2-interaction, and (c) processes of knowledge construction in and through a second or foreign language. T…
Reconciling time, space and function: a new dorsal-ventral stream model of sentence comprehension.
2013
We present a new dorsal–ventral stream framework for language comprehension which unifies basic neurobiological assumptions (Rauschecker & Scott, 2009) with a cross-linguistic neurocognitive sentence comprehension model (eADM; Bornkessel & Schlesewsky, 2006). The dissociation between (time-dependent)syntactic structure-building and (time-independent) sentence interpretation assumed within thee ADM provides a basis for the division of labour between the dorsal and ventral streams in comprehension. We posit that the ventral stream performs time-independent unifications of conceptual schemata, serving to create auditory objects of increasing complexity. The dorsal stream engages in the time-depe…
Escuela y diversidad lingüística: estudio de las actitudes lingüísticas de los futuros docentes valencianos
2019
The article analyses the linguistic attitudes of future Valencian teachers in a bilingual speaking community characterised by mainstream contact between the Catalan and Spanish languages. This research focuses on the language attitudes of a group of speakers who share a specific set of traits: age, education, profession and socioeconomic status. Special attention is given to attitudes towards four linguistic varieties used by Valencian speakers in their regular interactions: standard Spanish (CS), colloquial Spanish – nonstandard – (CNS), standard Valencian (VS) and vernacular Valencian or apitxat (VNS).
The beginning of the modernist novel is been manifested by the increasing interest in t…
Translation Process Research as Interaction Research: From Mental to Socio-Cognitive Processes
2014
The main methodological approaches used in cognitive translation process research have hitherto been inspired by methods originally developed in the behavioural sciences, especially psychology. This article contends that mainstream experimental research in laboratory settings needs to be complemented with other methodological approaches such as qualitative, ethnographic research in order to be able to account for the situated, embedded and extended aspects of cognition – as described in current cognitive science approaches. In addition, it presents the empirical research design and initial results of an ethnographic field study into the socio-cognitive aspects of translation. The results sh…
Random, asynchronous, and asymmetric transcriptional activity of enhancer-flanking major immediate-early genes ie1/3 and ie2 during murine cytomegalo…
2001
ABSTRACT The lungs are a major organ site of cytomegalovirus (CMV) pathogenesis, latency, and recurrence. Previous work on murine CMV latency has documented a high load and an even distribution of viral genomes in the lungs after the resolution of productive infection. Initiation of the productive cycle requires expression of the ie1/3 transcription unit, which is driven by the immediate-early (IE) promoter P 1/3 and generates IE1 and IE3 transcripts by differential splicing. Latency is molecularly defined by the absence of IE3 transcripts specifying the essential transactivator protein IE3. In contrast, IE1 transcripts were found to be generated focally and randomly, reflecting sporadic P …
Mainstreaming gender in the EU-accession process: the case of the Baltic Republics
2005
Since the early 1990s, the Baltic states have gone through processes of economic transition and liberalization. Although various reports give an overview of gendered impacts of these economic reforms, they fail to elaborate on the more complex relations between gender, citizenship, and social exclusion. This article explores these relations in more detail. The first decade of reforms in the Baltic states resulted in a lack of economic prospects, in particular for women from minority groups and women working in low-pay sectors. This made them increasingly vulnerable to trafficking for sexual purposes: migration to Western Europe was an attractive alternative for those without work, whether …
