Ultrastructure of the subventricular zone in Macaca fascicularis and evidence of a mouse-like migratory stream.

Recent publications have shown that the lateral wall of the lateral ventricles in the Macaca fascicularis brain, in particular the subventricular zone (SVZ), contains neural stem cells throughout adulthood that migrate through a migratory pathway (RMS) to the olfactory bulb (OB). To date, a detailed and systematic cytoarchitectural and ultrastructural study of the monkey SVZ and RMS has not been done. We found that the organization of the SVZ was similar to that of humans, with the ependymal layer surrounding the lateral ventricles, a hypocellular GAP layer formed by astrocytic and ependymal expansions, and the astrocyte ribbon, composed of astrocytic bodies. Cellular composition and three-dimensional organization of the subventricular germinal zone in the adult mammalian brain.

The adult mammalian subventricular zone (SVZ) contains stem cells that give rise to neurons and glia.In vivo, SVZ progeny migrate 3–8 mm to the olfactory bulb, where they form neurons. We show here that the SVZ of the lateral wall of the lateral ventricles in adult mice is composed of neuroblasts, glial cells, and a novel putative precursor cell. The topographical organization of these cells suggests how neurogenesis and migration are integrated in this region. Type A cells had the ultrastructure of migrating neuronal precursors. Subventricular Zone Astrocytes Are Neural Stem Cells in the Adult Mammalian Brain

AbstractNeural stem cells reside in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the adult mammalian brain. This germinal region, which continually generates new neurons destined for the olfactory bulb, is composed of four cell types: migrating neuroblasts, immature precursors, astrocytes, and ependymal cells. Here we show that SVZ astrocytes, and not ependymal cells, remain labeled with proliferation markers after long survivals in adult mice. After elimination of immature precursors and neuroblasts by an antimitotic treatment, SVZ astrocytes divide to generate immature precursors and neuroblasts. Opposites detract: Middle school peer group antipathies

This study examines variability in patterns of peer group antipathy. Same-grade adolescent peer groups were identified from sociometric nominations of preferred affiliates in a community sample of 600 Finnish ninth-grade middle school students (mean age = 15.0 years). Hierarchical linear modeling determined characteristics of youths in actor groups (nominators) that predicted antipathy for youths in target groups (nominatees) on the basis of target group characteristics. Most antipathies were based on dissimilarity between groups representing the mainstream culture and groups opposed to it. In the brain of adult mammals, neuronal precursors are generated in the subventricular zone in the lateral wall of the lateral ventricles and migrate into the olfactory bulbs (OBs) through a well-studied route called the rostral migratory stream (RMS). Recent studies have revealed that a comparable neural stem cell niche is widely conserved at the ventricular wall of adult vertebrates. Psychological and physical well-being in hearing-impaired children

Summary Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychological and physical well-being in 6–11-year-old hearing-impaired children. Methods The cohort consisted of 70 boys and 61 girls who either attended a special school for deaf children ( n  = 78) or a mainstream school ( n  = 53). We used the FKSI (Frankfurt Self-Concept Scales for Children). Results Children in special schools saw themselves in a less favourable light than children in mainstream schools. They were less confident and less assertive. They reached lower scores in making friends, and were more anxious and sad.
