Ecohydrological modelling of flow duration curve in Mediterranean river basins
2013
Abstract Flow duration curve provides an important synthesis of the relevant hydrological processes occurring at the basin scale, and, although it is typically obtained from field observations, different theoretical approaches finalized to its indirect reconstruction have been developed in recent years. In this study a recent ecohydrological model for the probabilistic characterization of base flows is tested through its application to a study catchment located in southern Italy, where long historical series of daily streamflow are available. The model, coupling soil moisture balance with a simplified scheme of the hydrological response of the basin, provides the daily flow duration curve. …
Short-term variability of mesozooplankton in a Mediterranean Coastal sound (Stagnone di Marsala, Western Sicily)
2001
Short-term variations in mesozooplankton were studied during four 24-h periods at one station in a Mediterranean coastal sound (Stagnone di Marsala, western Sicily) in May, July and October 1996 and March 1997. Zooplankton samples were collected every three or six hours with a plankton net (mesh size 125 µm) towed horizontally at the surface. Hydrometric data (height of tide, speed and direction of current) were also recorded to assess the influence of the hydrodynamic conditions on fluctuations in zooplankton abundance and changes in population structure. The zooplankton assemblages were markedly dominated by copepods and their naupliar stages, which consistently accounted for more than 95…
Las crecidas en ramblas valencianas mediterráneas
2001
This paper takes into account the characterisation of ephemeral stream hydrology from Mediterranean environments. The heavy floods that these countries suffer are due to firstly, the physical watershed features (steep slopes, scarced vegetation cover and thin soils) and, secondly, to the intense and variable rainfall. Large quantities of precipitation fall in a matter of hours, or even minutes, over very steep catchments, causing catastrophic flash-floods, with very pointed hydrographs and short time lags. Using hydrological daily data from the Rambla de la Viuda basin and five-minute data from both Barranc de Carraixet and Rambla de Poyo basins, we have analysed the rainfall- runoff proces…
Impact of Initial Soil Temperature Derived from Remote Sensing and Numerical Weather Prediction Datasets on the Simulation of Extreme Heat Events
2016
Extreme heat weather events have received increasing attention and has become of special importance as they can remarkably affect sectors as diverse as public health, energy consumption, water resources, natural biodiversity and agricultural production. In this regard, summer temperatures have become a parameter of essential interest under a framework of a hypothetical increase in the number of intense-heat conditions. Thus, their forecast is a crucial aspect bearing in mind a mitigation of the effects and impacts that these intense-heat situations could produce. The current work tries to reach a better understanding of these sorts of situations that are really common over the Western Medit…
Assessing surface sediment dynamics along the north-west coast of Marsa Dhouiba (Tunisia, southern Mediterranean)
2016
International audience; An investigation was conducted from summer 2012 to winter 2013 at 25 stations along the Tunisian coast near Kef Abbed at Marsa Dhouiba (north-east Mediterranean Sea) to analyse grain size, sediment mineralogy and currents. Particle-size analysis shows that sand deposits at shallow depths are characterised by S-shaped curves, indicating a degree of agitation and possible transport by rip currents near the bottom. At greater depths (between 10 and 30 m), the bottom is covered by coarse sand and gravel. A current was observed transporting sediment eastward along the coast; another seaward current was also noted. Generated by wind, swell and especially waves from west to…
X-stream CSD atbalsts Vērtspapīru uzskaites sistēmā
2015
Bakalaura darba mērķis ir novērtēt Vērtspapīru uzskaites sistēmas ziņojumu apmaiņas ar X-stream CSD sistēmas ieviešanas iespējamību, apskatīt ierobežojumus un ieviešanas prasības. Papildus nepieciešams novērtēt esošo situāciju un X-stream CSD atbalsta ieviešanas Vērtspapīru uzskaites sistēmā potenciālās priekšrocības un ieguvumus. Sekundārie bakalaura darba mērķi ir iegūt plašākas zināšanas par ISO 20022 standartu un NASDAQ OMX piedāvātā X-stream CSD risinājuma iespējām un metodēm, kuru izmantošana ļauj veikt atbalsta ieviešanu Vērtspapīru uzskaites sistēmā. Pēc darbā aprakstītās realizācijas ir jāspēj veikt X-stream CSD atbalsta ieviešanu Vērtspapīru uzskaites sistēmā.

Drug Resistance in Salmonella enterica ser. Typhimurium Bloodstream Infection, Malawi
2014
To the Editor: Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium is one of the most common causes of bloodstream infection in sub-Saharan Africa (1). Among adults, the principal risk factor for invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella (iNTS) disease is advanced HIV infection; up to 44% of HIV-infected patients experience bacteremic recurrence through recrudescence of the original infection (2,3). Epidemics of iNTS disease in sub-Saharan Africa have been associated with a novel genotype of S. enterica ser. Typhimurium of multilocus sequence type (ST) 313 that is rarely seen outside the region and is associated with multidrug resistance (MDR) to chloramphenicol, cotrimoxazole, and ampicillin (4,5). As a conse…
Bloodstream Infections in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
2021
Background: Little is known about the occurrence of bloodstream infections in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and the related clinical consequences. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the pooled occurrence of BSIs among hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and mortality of this patient population. Methods: A systematic search was performed on PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science from inception to 19 April 2021. The primary outcome was the occurrence of BSIs among hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The secondary outcome was mortality at the longest available follow-up. Results: Forty-six studies met the inclusion criteria, with a total of 42,694 patients e…
Mixture and Distribution of Different Water Qualities: An Experiment on Alternative Scenarios Concerning Vertical Structure in a Complex Market
2001
We set up a model of water management, which is inspired by the possibility of mixing water of different qualities. Water is supplied to two types of consumers with different preferences for water quality and quantity. A distributional knot may exist which optimally distributes the supplied water in the downstream market. Different scenarios compare experimentally the advantages of a centralized versus a decentralized resource management. We conducted experiments with 14 markets in three different settings, labelled as "upstream monopoly", "upstream duopoly" and "duopoly-monopsony". We find that a two-product monopoly performs better than the duopoly regarding social welfare and volatility …
