Right-handers and left-handers have different representations of their own hand
1998
The visual control of our own hand when dealing with an object and the observation of interactions between other people's hand and objects can be involved in the construction of internal representations of our own hand, as well as in hand recognition processes. Therefore, a different effect on handedness recognition is expected when subjects are presented with hands holding objects with either a congruent or an incongruent type of grip. Such an experiment was carried out on right-handed and left-handed subjects. We expected that the different degree of lateralisation in motor activities observed in the two populations [J. Herron, Neuropsychology of left- handedness, Academic Press, New York…
Evolution Characteristics of Delamination Damage in CFRP Composites Under Transverse Loading
2012
The initiation and subsequent progression of delamination in CFRP composite laminates is examined using finite element method. A 12-ply CFRP composite, with a total thickness of 2.4 mm and anti-symmetric ply sequence is simulated under three-point bend test setup. Each unidirectional composite lamina is treated as an equivalent elastic and orthotropic panel. Interface behavior is defined using cohesive damage model. Complementary three-point bend test on the specimen is performed at crosshead speed of 2 mm/min. The measured load–deflection response at mid-span location compares well with predicted values. Interface delamination accounts for up to 46.7% reduction in flexural stiffness from t…
Effect of the indentation process on fatigue life of drilled specimens
2015
Design and manufacture of mechanical elements are strongly influenced by the evaluation of the residual stresses due to their effects on the material strength. This paper presents numerical and experimental results performed on AW 6082-T6 aluminum alloy drilled specimens when the hole is created after a bilateral indentation process. The plastic deformation induced by the indenters creates a compressive residual stress field around the hole, which persists after the drilling operation. Several numerical analysis have been carried out in ANSYS APDL explicit solver for different indentation depths and hole diameters in order to evaluate the compressive circumferential stresses, optimal proces…
The irregularity strength of circulant graphs
2005
AbstractThe irregularity strength of a simple graph is the smallest integer k for which there exists a weighting of the edges with positive integers at most k such that all the weighted degrees of the vertices are distinct. In this paper we study the irregularity strength of circulant graphs of degree 4. We find the exact value of the strength for a large family of circulant graphs.
Fast and Simple Approximation of the Diameter and Radius of a Graph
2006
The increasing amount of data to be processed by computers has led to the need for highly efficient algorithms for various computational problems. Moreover, the algorithms should be as simple as possible to be practically applicable. In this paper we propose a very simple approximation algorithm for finding the diameter and the radius of an undirected graph. The algorithm runs in $O(m\sqrt{n})$ time and gives an additive error of $O(\sqrt{n})$ for a graph with n vertices and m edges. Practical experiments show that the results of our algorithm are close to the optimum and compare favorably to the 2/3-approximation algorithm for the diameter problem by Aingworth et al [1].
Attitude strength moderates adverse effects to questionnaire design
2018
The presentation and visual design of the “don’t know” category in rating scales on respondents’ behavior may have ambivalent effects. The hypothesis is that attitude strength toward the topic infl...

Effects of a low-frequency sound wave therapy programme on functional capacity, blood circulation and bone metabolism in frail old men and women
2009
Objective: To evaluate the effects of a low-frequency sound wave therapy programme on functional capacity, blood circulation and bone metabolism of the frail elderly. Design: Single-blind, randomized, controlled trial. Setting: Two senior service centres. Subjects: Forty-nine volunteers (14 males and 35 females) aged 62—93 years with up to 12 diagnosed diseases were allocated in either the intervention group (n = 30) or control group (n = 19). Intervention: The intervention group underwent sound wave therapy, 3—5 times a week for 30 minutes per session over a period of 6 months. The control group received no intervention. Main measurements: Blood pressure, functional capacity, mobility, bo…
Isometric endurance test of the cervical flexor muscles - Reliability and normative reference values.
2017
Abstract Objective To obtain reference values for the isometric endurance test (IET) of the cervical flexor muscles, investigate its reproducibility, and compare the results with the maximal isometric strength test (MIST) of the cervical flexor muscles. Design Cross-sectional non-comparative study with single group repeated measurements. Methods Altogether 219 healthy females aged 20–59 years volunteered to participate in the study. The IET was performed in the supine position and MIST seated. The reproducibility was evaluated by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and an analysis described by Bland and Altman. The relationship between the two measuring methods was evaluated by Pea…
An integrated methodological approach for optimising complex systems subjected to predictive maintenance
2021
Abstract The present paper addresses the relevant topic of maintenance management, widely recognised as a fundamental issue involving complex engineering systems and leading companies towards the optimisation of their assets while pursuing cost efficiency. With this regard, our research aims to provide companies with a hybrid methodological approach based on Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) capable to deal with the main failures potentially involving complex systems subjected to predictive maintenance. Such an approach is going to be integrated within the framework of traditional Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), whose strengths and weaknesses are considered. In pa…
