The effects of treated effluents on the intensity of papillomatosis and HSP70 expression in roach.

2008

Epidermal papillomatosis in fish has been proposed as an indicator of environmental stress but experimental evidence of connection between contaminants and papillomatosis in fish is scarce. We studied changes in the intensity of epidermal papillomatosis and the expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in roach, Rutilus rutilus, exposed to treated pulp mill and municipal effluents. In male roach, the increase in papillomatosis intensity was higher in fish exposed to 15% than in fish exposed to 1.5% concentration of municipal effluent. No differences were observed in papillomatosis development in females, or in HSP70 expression. In all the experiments conducted, the increasing effect of ef…

THE REHABILITATION THROUGH EXTERNAL PRESTRESSING OF HISTORICAL REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGES WITH REDUCED PERFORMANCE: A CASE STUDY

2022

Many existing reinforced concrete bridges exhibit behaviour at the Service Limit State and the Ultimate Limit State which can be considered unsatisfactory with respect to the current provisions of Codes, but which are actually deficiencies deriving from obsolete calculation methods, structure age, material degradation, diffuse or localized corrosion and increased loads. Among these, cantilever bridges with half-joints may present a decrease in global safety coefficients for the most stressed current sections of the deck or in the local ones, that affect the performance of elements sensitive to degradation, such as Gerber saddles. In these cases, simple strengthening interventions through ex…

Sleep-time physiological recovery is associated with eating habits in distressed working-age Finns with overweight: secondary analysis of a randomise…

2021

Background Association of physiological recovery with nutrition has scarcely been studied. We investigated whether physiological recovery during sleep relates to eating habits, i.e., eating behaviour and diet quality. Methods Cross-sectional baseline analysis of psychologically distressed adults with overweight (N = 252) participating in a lifestyle intervention study in three Finnish cities. Recovery measures were based on sleep-time heart rate variability (HRV) measured for 3 consecutive nights. Measures derived from HRV were 1) RMSSD (Root Mean Square of the Successive Differences) indicating the parasympathetic activation of the autonomic nervous system and 2) Stress Balance (SB) indica…

Coping with technostress: when emotional responses fail

2017

In this study, we develop two new perspectives for technostress mitigation from the viewpoint of coping. First, we examine users’ emotional coping responses to stressful IT, focusing specifically on distress venting and distancing from IT. As these mechanisms may not always be effective for individuals’ well-being, we extend our approach to self-regulation in coping, which concerns general stress-resistance. Thus, we specifically study how IT control moderates the effect of emotional coping responses to stressful situations involving IT use. We test the proposed model in a cross-sectional study of IT users from multiple organizations (N=1,091). The study contributes to information systems l…

Mitigating technostress is not easy, but it’s doable

2021

Although personal use of digital technologies is often characterised as fun and voluntary, technostress is anything but. Floods of push notifications and information from personal devices and the constant pressure to be available online can contribute to poor well-being, fatigue, and concentration problems. Markus Salo, Henri Pirkkalainen, Cecil Chua and Tiina Koskelainen explain how technostress develops over time and how users can mitigate it. nonPeerReviewed

Äidin huolet lapsensa koulunkäynnistä : mikä selittää?

2014

Longitudinal study on reciprocity between personality traits and parenting stress

2014

Reciprocal associations between the Big Five personality traits and parenting stress—including both parents’ feelings of their distress and perception of their incompetence as parents—were studied with 248 participants (49% of which were males). Longitudinal data, collected at ages 33/36, 42 and 50 years, were used. Cross-lagged path analysis revealed that in case of both mothers and fathers, neuroticism at age 33 predicted high parenting stress, and extraversion at age 33 predicted low parenting stress at age 42. Also, parenting stress at age 36 predicted high neuroticism and low extraversion at age 42. From age 42 to 50, only high parenting stress contributed to low neuroticism. Thus, mo…

Toward an understanding of a healthy organizational change process : A three-wave longitudinal study among university employees

2019

This study aimed to improve our understanding of what constitutes a healthy organizational change process among university employees. Positive attitudes and proactive participation toward organizational change were presumed to affect and be affected by personality resources measured via core self-evaluations and work-related motivational well-being (vigor). The study used 3-wave longitudinal data collected in 2 large Finnish universities during their recent process of organizational change (N = 926). Structural equation modeling was used to establish the direction of the relationships between the variables. The results showed that high levels of both core self-evaluations and vigor were ass…

Sublethal Pyrethroid Insecticide Exposure Carries Positive Fitness Effects Over Generations in a Pest Insect

2019

AbstractStress tolerance and adaptation to stress are known to facilitate species invasions. Many invasive species are also pests and insecticides are used to control them, which could shape their overall tolerance to stress. It is well-known that heavy insecticide usage leads to selection of resistant genotypes but less is known about potential effects of mild sublethal insecticide usage. We studied whether stressful, sublethal pyrethroid insecticide exposure has within-generational and/or maternal transgenerational effects on fitness-related traits in the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) and whether maternal insecticide exposure affects insecticide tolerance of offspring…
