In the present study, silver ions were incorporated into a poly-(l-lactide) (PLA) matrix by a solvent casting technique using different solvents and glycerol as plasticizer. The effect of the different formulations on the morphology, thermal, mechanical and color properties were first evaluated. Additionally, a thorough study of the silver ions release to an aqueous environment was also monitored over time by anodic stripping voltammetry and correlated with the antimicrobial performance against S. enterica. Development of microwave gas sensors

Abstract This work presents a novel approach in gas detection by an original method of microwave transduction. The design of the sensor includes a coplanar grounded wave guide with a gas sensing material to study its sensitivity to ammonia in argon flux. The sensing material can play the role of the substrate or can be deposited as a thin layer on a microstrip structure used in electronics. Honeycomb supported Co3O4/CeO2 catalysts for CO/CH4 emissions abatement: effect of low Pd-Pt content on the catalytic activity

Abstract A structured Co3O4–CeO2 composite oxide, containing 30% by weight of Co3O4, has been prepared over a cordieritic honeycomb support. The bimetallic, Pd–Pt catalyst has been obtained by impregnation of the supported Co3O4–CeO2 with Pd and Pt precursors in order to obtain a total metal loading of 50 g/ft3. CO, CH4 combined oxidation tests were performed over the catalyzed monoliths in realistic conditions, namely GHSV = 100,000 h−1 and reaction feed close to emission from bi-fuel vehicles. Abstract Thermolytic reverse electrodialysis heat engine (t-RED HE) has been recently proposed as a technology for converting low-temperature waste heat into electricity. The construction and operation of the first world lab-scale prototype unit are reported. The system consists of: (i) a reverse electrodialysis unit where, the concentration gradient between two solutions of thermolytic salts is converted into electricity and (ii) a thermally-driven regeneration unit where low-temperature heat is used to restore the initial conditions of the two feed streams. Insertion of Magnetic Bimetallic Oxalate Complexes into Layered Double Hydroxides

Bimetallic oxalate complexes have been successfully inserted into layered double hydroxides as ferromagnetic oxalate-bridged oligomers. Different preparation methods afford different sizes and compositions for the oligomers. In all cases, no magnetic ordering has been observed above 2 K.

Modeling bimetallic corrosion under thin electrolyte films

A finite element model (FEM) was developed to calculate the potential distribution in the electrolyte in the case of bimetallic corrosion between iron and zinc electrodes, taking into account mass transport of oxygen in the solution. This model was first compared with experimental results obtained by scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) on a galvanized steel cut-edge in immersion conditions in a 0.03 M NaCl electrolyte. A good agreement was obtained between the calculated and experimental current densities. Recent seismic events, all over the world, demonstrated that masonry constructions are prone to brittle collapses when shear or compression capacity is reached. It is clear that, in many real cases, masonry columns need to be strengthened for enhancing their load-carrying capacity and to develop a more ductile response.
