Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanin (KLH): Slow In Vitro Reassociation of KLH1 and KLH2 from Immucothel®

1998

Abstract Following our in vitro reassociation of keyhole limpet hemocyanin subunits in the presence of high concentrations (100 mM each) of calcium and magnesium chloride (Harris et al., 1997a, Micron 28, 31–41; 1997b, Micron 28, 43–56), we have now extended our investigations by using a buffer system containing a lower concentration of the two divalent cations (10 mM each). Reassociation of mixed KLH subunits present in the commercially available product Immucothel® was performed using a standardized buffer solution containing 50 mM Tris–HCl, 150 mM NaCl, 10 mM CaCl2 and 10 mM MgCl2 (pH 7.4) over a minimum period of one week, at 4°C. This solution was selected as being close to our KLH sta…

Superchiral Pd 3 L 6 Coordination Complex and Its Reversible Structural Conversion into Pd 3 L 3 Cl 6 Metallocycles

2015

Large, non-symmetrical, inherently chiral bispyridyl ligand L derived from natural ursodeoxycholic bile acid was used for square-planar coordination of tetravalent Pd(II) , yielding the cationic single enantiomer of superchiral coordination complex 1 Pd3 L6 containing 60 well-defined chiral centers in its flower-like structure. Complex 1 can readily be transformed by addition of chloride into a smaller enantiomerically pure cyclic trimer 2 Pd3 L3 Cl6 containing 30 chiral centers. This transformation is reversible and can be restored by the addition of silver cations. Furthermore, a mixture of two constitutional isomers of trimer, 2 and 2', and dimer, 3 and 3', can be obtained directly from …

Variability of near-surface saturated hydraulic conductivity for the clay soils of a small Sicilian basin

2019

Abstract Proper characterization of saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, of clay soils in a hillslope or a basin is still a challenge for soil science. In this investigation, the clay soils of the Maganoce (Sicily, Italy) basin were sampled at 19 sampling sites by the BEST procedure of soil hydraulic characterization. More OM implied less compact conditions (decreasing dry soil bulk density; coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.67), more stability to water of the soil aggregates (increasing water stable aggregates; R2 = 0.83) and, consequently, higher Ks values (R2 = 0.54). Variability of Ks was lower in the steeper zones of the basin than in the flatter ones. A comparison with the Ks data…

Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Molecular Materials Formed by Tetrathiafulvalene Radicals and Magnetic Trimeric Clusters of Dimetallic Oxalate‐Bridged Compl…

2003

The first examples of trimeric, dimetallic, pure oxalate-bridged complexes [ox = (C2O4)2−] have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically for the two new series of crystalline molecular assemblies formulated as (TTF)4{MII(H2O)2[MIII(ox)3]2}·nH2O [for MIII = Cr; MII = Mn (1), Fe (2), Co (3), Ni (4), Cu (5) and Zn (6); for MIII = Fe; MII = Mn (7), Fe (8), Co (9), Ni (10) and Zn (11)]. Both series (Cr2M and Fe2M) are isostructural. The crystal structure of (TTF)4{Mn(H2O)2[Cr(ox)3]2}⋅14H2O (1) [monoclinic, space group C2/c (no. 15), a = 13.240(5) A, b = 19.450(5) A, c = 27.690(5) A, β = 97.63(5)°, V = 7068(3) A3 and Z = 4] shows alternating layers of the organic radical T…

Human neuroglobin: crystals and preliminary X-ray diffraction analysis

2002

Neuroglobin, a recently discovered member of the haemoglobin superfamily, is primarily expressed in the brain of humans and other vertebrates, where it has been proposed to enhance O(2) supply in response to hypoxia or ischaemia, protecting the neuron from hypoxic injury. Neuroglobin is the first example of a vertebrate haemoglobin in which a hexacoordinate haem geometry has been detected. A triple mutant (replacing three Cys residues) of human neuroglobin (151 amino acids) has been expressed in Escherichia coli, purified and crystallized in two crystal forms, the best of which diffracts to 1.95 A resolution using synchrotron radiation. The crystals belong to space group P2(1), with unit-ce…

Pressure Effect Studies on the 3D Spin Crossover System: {Fe(3CN-py)2[M(CN)2]2}·nH2O (n < 2/3, M = Ag(I), Au(I))

2007

[EN] Pressure effect investigations on the magnetic behaviour of the 3D SCO polymers {Fe(3CN-py)2[Ag(CN)2]2} · 2/3H2O (1) and {Fe(3CN-py)2[Au(CN)2]2} · 2/3H2O (2) have been carried out in the range of 105 Pa to 0.7 GPa. Despite both compounds are isostructural their magnetic behaviour under applied hydrostatic pressures is very different. Strong nonlinearity in the Tc(P) vs. P plot has been observed for compound 1 a fact which contrasts with the almost linear dependence observed for each spin transition in 2. However, both compounds are extremely sensitive to the application of pressure as well as the Tc(P) vs. P plots denote.

In vitro evaluation of leishmanicidal properties of a new family of monodimensional coordination polymers based on diclofenac ligand

2020

Some series of isostructural chains with general formula [M(diclof)(HO)]·(EtOH) have been obtained from reaction between diclofenac ligand (diclof) and first row transition salts (M = Mn (1),Ni (2) and Co (3)). These monodimensional coordination polymers have been characterized and their crystal structures have been solved by X-ray diffraction methods, elucidating isostructural compounds that are chains with water molecules acting as bridge between different metallic centers, while diclofenac ligands are coordinated to the octahedral coordination environment of the same. Magnetic studies of these complexes have revealed the existence of moderate ferromagnetic interactions among manganese, n…

On the regioselectivity of the Friedländer reaction leading to huprines: stereospecific acid-promoted isomerization of syn-huprines to their anti-reg…

2001

Abstract Racemic 12-amino-6,7,8,11-tetrahydro-7,11-methanocycloocta[ b ]quinoline derivatives ( syn -huprines) substituted at the 9-position with a methyl or ethyl group, and both enantioenriched forms of the 9-ethyl derivative, obtained by chiral MPLC resolution of the racemic mixture, were readily converted to the corresponding anti -isomers (huprines) by stereospecific acid-promoted (AlCl 3 or triflic acid) isomerization of the endocyclic CC double bond from the 9(10)- to the 8(9)-position. These results support the hypothesis that the hitherto unseen syn -huprines are also formed under the usual acidic Friedlander reaction conditions used to prepare the known huprines, but rearrange in…

Performance-based characterization of recycled polymer modified asphalt mixture

2021

Due to the introduction of secondary materials, the asphalt mixtures to be designed and tested in our laboratories are constantly becoming much more complex than traditional asphalt mixtures making difficult to use conventional laboratory procedure and/or predict expected results. This study proposes a comprehensive characterization of asphalt mixture modified with recycled polymer compound by using both wet and dry process proposing adjustments to laboratory mixing and sample compaction procedure. Accordingly, three AC20 Hot Asphalt Mixture (HMA) were designed and their conventional and performance related properties were assessed by looking at a) Indirect Tensile test (ITS) a) moisture da…

Hydrothermal liquefaction of waste biomass in stirred reactors: One step forward to the integral valorization of municipal sludge

2020

Abstract Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of municipal sludge (MS) was performed at 350 °C for 30 min (subcritical water) and at 400 °C for 0 min (supercritical water) at fixed kinetic severity (LogR0 = 8.9) in static and stirred batch reactors to study the effect of the flow regime on the energy recovery (ER) of the process and on the quality of the products. With adopted experimental procedures it was possible to reduce to less than 10% the yield of lost organic compounds, termed volatiles (VT), and to collect and quantify a liquid hydrocarbon fraction (HC) separated from the biocrude (BC). The highest value of the HC yield, 25% w/w, was obtained in supercritical conditions. The C content …
