Structural and functional characterization of enamel pigmentation in shrews.
2013
Pigmented tooth enamel occurs in several vertebrate clades, ranging from mammals to fish. Although an iron compound is associated with this orange to red colored pigmentation, its chemical and structural organization within the enamel is unknown. To determine the nature of the iron compound, we investigated heavily pigmented teeth of the northern short-tailed shrew Blarina brevicauda using combined characterization techniques such as scanning and transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We found that the pigmentation of the enamel with an iron content of around 8wt% results from a close to amorphous magnetite phase deposited around the nm-sized enamel crystals. Fu…

Remodelling of biological parameters during human ageing: evidence for complex regulation in longevity and in type 2 diabetes.
2013
Factor structure analyses have revealed the presence of specific biological system markers in healthy humans and diseases. However, this type of approach in very old persons and in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is lacking. A total sample of 2,137 Italians consisted of two groups: 1,604 healthy and 533 with T2DM. Age (years) was categorized as adults (≤65), old (66-85), oldest old (>85-98) and centenarians (≥99). Specific biomarkers of routine haematological and biochemical testing were tested across each age group. Exploratory factorial analysis (EFA) by principal component method with Varimax rotation was used to identify factors including related variables. Structural equation modelling (SEM) wa…
Vinblastine-induced autophagocytosis: effects on liver glycogen
1983
The possible similarities of the mechanism by which vinblastine induces autophagocytosis in liver were compared with the known effects of glucagon in glucagon-induced autophagocytosis. A single intraperitoneal injection of vinblastine produced a wave of autophagocytosis in less than 0.5 h in mouse hepatocytes. Liver glycogen content decreases simultaneously and blood glucose first increased and then decreased below control values. Both liver cAMP concentration and the activity of glycogen phosphorylase remained unchanged. These findings provide evidence that the induction of autophagocytosis after vinblastine injection is not mediated by cAMP. The increased degradation of glycogen may occur…
Differentiative pathway activated by 3-aminobenzamide, an inhibitor of PARP, in human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells
2004
AbstractThis study describes the molecular mechanism by which treatment with 3-AB, a potent inhibitor of PARP, allows human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells to restrict growth and enter differentiation. Our findings show that in MG-63 cells, aberrant gene expression keeps Rb protein constitutively inactivated through hyperphosphorylation and this promotes uncontrolled proliferation of the cells. After 3-AB-treatment, the poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation of nuclear proteins markedly decreases and this results in an increase in both the hypophosphorylated active form of Rb and pRb/E2F complexes. These effects are accompanied by G1 arrest, downregulation of gene products required for proliferation (cyclin D1, β…
One-dimensional heterogeneous solids with uncertain elastic modulus in presence of long-range interactions: Interval versus stochastic analysis
2013
The analysis of one-dimensional non-local elastic solids with uncertain Young's modulus is addressed. Non-local effects are represented as long-range central body forces between non-adjacent volume elements. For comparison purpose, the fluctuating elastic modulus of the material is modeled following both a probabilistic and a non-probabilistic approach. To this aim, a novel definition of the interval field concept, able to limit the overestimation affecting ordinary interval analysis, is introduced. Approximate closed-form expressions are derived for the bounds of the interval displacement field as well as for the mean-value and variance of the stochastic response.
Biodynamic behavior of the trunk and the abdomen during whole-body vibration
1989
Vibration strain may be defined as the sum of all reactions of the human being to vibration exposure. This also includes the biomechanical behavior of particular parts of the body. Knowledge about these reactions is necessary in the field of occupational health and ergonomics. Biomechanical models, experimental methods, and results are presented. It can be shown that under vibration exposure with different conditions (body posture, vibration direction), the body parts are in resonance at varying frequencies, mainly in a low frequency range.
Influence of Structural Isomerism on the Electronic Properties of Extended Phthalocyanines
1993
Abstract The electronic structure of isomeric naphthalocyanines (H2Nc) is investigated using the nonempirical valence effective Hamiltonian (VEH) technique. The way the outer benzene rings are annelated (linearly as in 2,3-H2Nc or angularly as in 1,2-H2Nc) is shown to determine very important changes in the electronic properties. While similar properties to those of phthalocyanine are calculated for 1,2-H2Nc, lower oxidation potentials and red-shifted optical absorptions are predicted for 2,3-H2Nc in agreement with experimental data. The isomerism resulting from the different relative positions of the angularly annelated benzene rings in 1,2-H2Nc is shown to have almost no effect on the ele…
Convolution-based ensemble learning algorithms to estimate the bond strength of the corroded reinforced concrete
2022
Reinforced concrete bond strength deterioration is one of the most serious problems in the construction industry. It is one of the most common factors impacting structural deterioration and the major cause of premature decadence of reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, developing an accurate model with the lowest variance and high reliability for the bond strength of corroded reinforced concrete is very important. The current work evaluates the efficiency of convolution-based ensemble learning algorithms. To address these issues, convolution-based ensemble learning models are developed using a database collected from the previous experimental studies of relative bond strength for corro…
