Multiexciton complex from extrinsic centers in AlGaAs epilayers on Ge and Si substrates

The multiexciton properties of extrinsic centers from AlGaAs layers on Ge and Si substrates are addressed. The two photon cascade is found both in steady state and in time resolved experiments. Polarization analysis of the photoluminescence provides clearcut attribution to neutral biexciton complexes. Our findings demonstrate the prospect of exploiting extrinsic centers for generating entangled photon pairs on a Si based device. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Role of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Detection of Cardiac Amyloidosis

Objectives Our aim was to evaluate the role and mechanism of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in identifying cardiac amyloidosis (CA) and to investigate associations between LGE and clinical, morphologic, functional, and biochemical features. Background CA can be challenging to diagnose by echocardiography. Recent studies have demonstrated an emerging role for LGE-CMR. Methods LGE-CMR was performed in 120 patients with amyloidosis. The Sec61 translocon of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane forms an aqueous pore, allowing polypeptides to be transferred across or integrated into membranes. Protein translocation into the ER can occur co- and posttranslationally. In yeast, posttranslational translocation involves the heptameric translocase complex including its Sec62p and Sec63p subunits. The mammalian ER membrane contains orthologs of yeast Sec62p and Sec63p, but their function is poorly understood. Functional Characterization of a Guanylyl Cyclase-activating Protein from Vertebrate Rods

The membrane-bound guanylyl cyclase in vertebrate photoreceptor cells is one of the key enzymes in visual transduction. It is highly sensitive to the free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]). The activation process is cooperative and mediated by a novel calcium-binding protein named GCAP (guanylyl cyclase-activating protein). We isolated GCAP from bovine rod outer segments, determined amino acid sequences of proteolytically obtained peptides, and cloned its gene. The Ca2+-bound form of native GCAP has an apparent molecular mass of 20.5 kDa and the Ca2+-free form of 25 kDa as determined by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The present study explored how the organisational and cultural experiences of a trainee Sport Psychology Consultant (SPC) working in professional football shaped her identity and professional development. Gene flow is the main force opposing divergent selection, and its effects are greater in populations in close proximity. Thus, complete reproductive isolation between parapatric populations is not expected, particularly in the absence of ecological adaptation and sharp environmental differences. Here, we explore the biogeographical patterns of an endemic ant species, Cataglyphis floricola, for which two colour morphs (black and bicolour) coexist in parapatry throughout continuous sandy habitat in southern Spain. Comparative analysis of zebrafish nos2a and nos2b genes

Abstract Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) produces nitric oxide (NO) from arginine. Three NOS isoforms have been identified in mammals, namely a neuronal (NOS1), an inducible (NOS2) and an endothelial (NOS3) enzyme. In zebrafish genome, one nos1 gene and two nos2 genes (nos2a and nos2b) were observed. We cloned zebrafish nos2a cDNA and compared nos2a and nos2b sequences, expression and inducibility. When analyzed by reverse transcription-PCR, the expression of nos2a remained very low during initial development, then increased at 96 hpf, while nos2b was expressed from 6 hpf and subsequently remained stable. Filamins are actin-binding proteins that participate in a wide range of cell functions, including cell morphology, locomotion, membrane protein localization, and intracellular signaling. The three filamin isoforms found in humans, filamins A, B, and C, are highly homologous, and their roles are partly complementary. In addition to actin, filamins interact with dozens of other proteins that have roles as membrane receptors and channels, enzymes, signaling intermediates, and transcription factors.
