Tertiary lymphoid structures in pulmonary metastases of microsatellite stable colorectal cancer

Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) are ectopic lymphoid aggregates located at sites of chronic inflammation and recognized as prognosticators in several cancers. We aimed to analyse the prognostic effect of TLSs in colorectal cancer (CRC) pulmonary metastases and primary tumours, with a comparison to the CD3+ and CD8+ cell density-based immune cell score (ICS). For TLS density and TLS maximum diameter analysis, 67 pulmonary metastases and 63 primary tumours were stained with haematoxylin and eosin. ON-LINE CONSTRUCTION OF A SMALL AUTOMATON FOR A FINITE SET OF WORDS

In this paper we describe a "light" algorithm for the on-line construction of a small automaton recognising a finite set of words. The algorithm runs in linear time. We carried out good experimental results on real dictionaries, on biological sequences and on the sets of suffixes (resp. factors) of a set of words that shows how our automaton is near to the minimal one. For the suffixes of a text, we propose a modified construction that leads to an even smaller automaton. We moreover construct linear algorithms for the insertion and deletion of a word in a finite set, directly from the constructed automaton.
Mixed Finite Elements for multilayered smart plates nonlocal analysis

A mixed finite element formulation for the Eringen’s nonlocal analysis of smart, magneto-electro-elastic, multilayered plates is presented. Finite elements for different refined higher order plate layerwise theories are systematically developed. They ensure interface continuity and allow associating different values of the nonlocal parameter to the laminate layers. Standard 9-node and 16-node isoparametric, quadrilateral finite elements have been implemented and tested, showing the characteristics and limitations of the proposed approach.

AbstractIn the developing CNS α- and β-dystroglycan are highly concentrated in the endfeet of radial neuroepithelial cells at the contact site to the basal lamina. We show that injection of anti-dystroglycan Fab fragments, knockdown of dystroglycan using RNAi, and overexpression of a dominant-negative dystroglycan protein by microelectroporation in neuroepithelial cells of the chick retina and optic tectum in vivo leads to the loss of their radial morphology, to hyperproliferation, to an increased number of postmitotic neurons, and to an altered distribution of several basally concentrated proteins. The author has studied, in a group of 40 dissections on cadavers of individuals of different ages, the main “critical zones” of entrapment of some terminal branches of the lumbo-sacral plexus, which include canals (fibrous, osteo-fibrous, fibro-muscular), intervals (intermuscular, fibro-muscular, musculo-ligamentous), rings (fibrous or fibro-muscular) and foramina. They provide the topographical anatomical basis for possible compressive phenomena of the nerves of the lower limb.

Type V collagen counteracts osteo-differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells

In search of novel gene signatures for osteo-differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), we submitted cDNA preparations from undifferentiated and differentiating MSCs to differential display- and semiquantitative-PCR and found down-regulation of COL5A1 in osteo-induced cultures at days 21 and 28, when the mineralized matrix accumulates. We also cultured osteo-differentiating MSCs onto type V collagen substrates and found a decrease in the accumulation of extracellular calcium compared to those grown in uncoated flasks. To our knowledge, this is first evidence that type V collagen might represent a stromal component that impairs osteogenesis.
