Parliamentary Procedure: Politics of Dissensus

2018

The chapter deals with parliamentary procedure as a dissensual conceptual horizon. Parliamentarisation marks a form of politicisation by opening up parliamentary controversies, and the formation of the parliamentary procedure can be read as a history of the struggle on the successive politicisations, which partly is related to the growing powers of the parliament, partly to the formation of a specific procedural profile for the parliament. The procedural rules for parliamentary agenda-setting and debate create chances for the parliamentary style of acting politically. The procedure indicates how to deal with dissensus without eliminating it. It consists of rules, conventions and practices a…

Review of Bauman & Lyon (2013) Vigilancia Liquida

2014

In the contemporary liquid society of consumers, those aspects linked to security and surveillance is on the agenda of public opinion. Based on a polished style but not less deep, Bauman in his recent book, Liquid Surveillance explores not only the roots of fear as a political indoctrination mechanism, but also as a sign to unmark the selected people. Technology posed at the disposal of surveillance, more than a need, exhibits a sign to the rest of society.

Development of a HMD for Virtual Acoustics. Application in a World Heritage (UNESCO) Building from the Valencian Civil Gothic

2016

The aim of this paper is to show the development of an immersive application in a historic visual and acoustic space. The “Llotja de la Seda” (“Silk Exchange Building”) is a late Valencian Gothic style civil building in Valencia (Spain), built between 1482 and 1548. The UNESCO considered it as a World Heritage Site in 1996 since “the site is of outstanding universal value as it is a wholly exceptional example of a secular building in late Gothic style, which illustrates the power and wealth of one of the great Mediterranean mercantile cities”.

Análisis de variables psicopedagógicas en hijos adolescentes violentos desde el modelo cognitivo

2018

[EN] Parental abuse by sons and daughtersis a reality latent in our society. The present article analyzes the existence or not of psycho-pedagogical variables (academic and occupational) as risk factors in adolescents who exert violence against their parents. Methods used are descriptive, focused on the analysis of studies that contemplate these variables and compare them with research on aggressive offspring. Results suggest that these variables are risk factors for violent behaviors in adolescents due to violence towards parents and they suggest relevant issues to research, prevention and educational intervention. Hereby, from the cognitive model, interaction between intrapersonal and int…

On Simon Nelson Patten’s Progressivism: A note

2020

This article is an attempt to offer an assessment of the main coordinates of Simon Nelson Patten’s views on democracy and biological determinism. This will allow us to better delineate the differences—as well as the affinities—between Patten and the core of progressives discussed by Thomas C. Leonard in a series of path-breaking contributions, culminating in his Illiberal Reformers: Race, Eugenics, and American Economics in the Progressive Era. It is our contention that even within the persisting intricacies, ambiguities, and contradictions of Patten’s expository style, it is possible to trace a shift in some aspects of his ideas—a gradual evolution that makes his peculiar brand of progress…

Development of Prosocial Behavior in Spanish Adolescents and Its Relations to Parenting Styles

2019

The goal of this chapter is to describe how parenting relates to prosocial development in Spanish adolescents. Although not a lot of work has been done on Spanish youth, the work that has been done has largely paralleled the work done on European American youth. We present evidence from a longitudinal study that examines how support and communication, psychological control, and permissiveness from both mothers and fathers change across adolescence and relate to prosocial behavior in a large sample of Spanish adolescents. Adolescent prosocial behavior was relatively stable. Both mothers and fathers became more permissive and supportive across adolescence, but less psychologically controlling…

Patient and mentor language style matching as a predictor of working alliance, engagement with treatment as usual, and eating disorders symptoms over…

2022

Objective The aim of this study was to examine the processes involved in a guided self-help (GSH) pre-treatment intervention (RecoveryMANTRA) for patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), by measuring the levels of patient/mentor Language Style Matching (LSM). RecoveryMANTRA was supported by student mentors or peer mentors (recovered individuals) over six weekly chat-based sessions. We examined whether LSM during RecoveryMANTRA predicted patients'working alliance with the clinic therapist, motivation, eating disorder (ED) and general psychopathology. A further aim was to examine differences in LSM between student mentors and peer mentors. Method 87 AN adults received RecoveryMANTRA plus treatmen…

Lifestyles and Quality of Life of People with Mental Illness During the COVID-19 Pandemic

2023

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the quality of life (QoL), daily lifestyle, and mental health of people suffering from a mental disorder. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the prolongation of the COVID-19 emergency on QoL and lifestyles in a sample of 100 outpatients at the Psychiatry Unit in Palermo University Hospital, Italy. QoL was measured through the 12-item Short Form Survey and the COV19-Impact on Quality of Life. Lifestyle changes during the pandemic were measured through the lifestyle change questionnaire. Lifestyle, psychological, socioeconomic and environmental factors and their impact on hypertension during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

2020

SUMMARY: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic considerably affects health, wellbeing, social, economic and other aspects of daily life. The impact of COVID-19 on blood pressure (BP) control and hypertension remains insufficiently explored. We therefore provide a comprehensive review of the potential changes in lifestyle factors and behaviours as well as environmental changes likely to influence BP control and cardiovascular risk during the pandemic. This includes the impact on physical activity, dietary patterns, alcohol consumption and the resulting consequences, for example increases in body weight. Other risk factors for increases in BP and cardiovascular risk such as smoking…
