Polyoxometalate Monolayers in Langmuir-Blodgett Films

Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a variety of polyoxometalates of different shapes, sizes, and charges were prepared by taking advantage of the adsorption properties of these polyanions on a positively charged monolayer of an organic surfactant spread on water. Three different aspects were investigated. 1) The electrochemical and electrochromic properties of LB films containing the easily reducible polyoxoanion [P2Mo18O62]6-. Absorbance changes of these LB films deposited onto an ITO substrate have been induced by repeated switching of the applied potential. International audience; Substrate surface preparation is a key step in coating deposition process. In recent years, pulsed laser cleaning has emerged as a possible technique to challenge the traditional preparation methods (based on degreasing and eventually grit-blasting). Application of sol-gel and laser evaporation methods to obtain thin gas sensitive films

New type resistive/capacitative gas sensitive structures were obtained by using a specially prepared substrate- glass, covered by thin conducting In/sub 2/O/sub 3/ layer, cutted into a comb teeth-type electrodes by help of laser beam. Such laser processed gap in the layer of conducting material was a prototype of excellent humidity sensor, especially at high values of relative humidity (RH). Different additional coatings onto a laser processed gap were examined for humidity sensing. Sol-gel, vacuum thermal evaporation and laser evaporation methods were used to obtain a thin layers of different materials.

Abstract The present study deals with information that could be obtained by real-time contactless monitoring of the normal displacement, due to the propagation of the longitudinal waves generated by nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation, through a transparent and porous ceramic coating deposited on a metallic substrate. Monohydroxylated fatty acid substrate specificity of human leukocyte 5-lipoxygenase and ω-hydroxylase

Various monohydroxylated fatty acids were synthesized from eicosapolyenoic acids, namely arachidonic (20:4 omega-6), timnodonic (20:5 omega-3), dihomogammalinolenic (20:3 omega-6) and mead (20:3 omega-9) acids. 12-Hydroxy derivatives, as well as 12-hydroxy-5,8,10-heptadecatrienoic acid (HHT), were produced with platelets as the enzyme source, and 15-hydroxy derivatives were produced by soya bean lipoxygenase treatment. Calcium-Dependent Assembly of Centrin-G-Protein Complex in Photoreceptor Cells

Photoexcitation of rhodopsin activates a heterotrimeric G-protein cascade leading to cyclic GMP hydrolysis in vertebrate photoreceptors. Light-induced exchanges of the visual G-protein transducin between the outer and inner segment of rod photoreceptors occur through the narrow connecting cilium. Here we demonstrate that transducin colocalizes with the Ca(2+)-binding protein centrin 1 in a specific domain of this cilium. Coimmunoprecipitation, centrifugation, centrin overlay, size exclusion chromatography, and kinetic light-scattering experiments indicate that Ca(2+)-activated centrin 1 binds with high affinity and specificity to transducin. Potential biological role of laccase from the sponge Suberites domuncula as an antibacterial defense component

Abstract Background Laccases are copper-containing enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of a wide variety of phenolic substrates. Methods We describe the first poriferan laccase from the marine demosponge Suberites domuncula. Results This enzyme comprises three characteristic multicopper oxidase homologous domains. Immunohistological studies revealed that the highest expression of the laccase is in the surface zone of the animals. The expression level of the laccase gene is strongly upregulated after exposure of the animals to the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide. Resistance simulations for junctions of SW and MW carbon nanotubes with various metal substrates

Abstract This theoretical study focuses on junctions between the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and contacting metallic elements of a nanocircuit. Numerical simulations on the conductance and resistance of these contacts have been performed using the multiple scattering theory and the effective media cluster approach. Two models for CNT-metal contacts have been considered in this paper: a) first principles “liquid metal” model and b) semi-empirical model of “effective bonds” based on Landauer notions on ballistic conductivity. Periglacial transport distance of Pb derived from small-scale ore veins in the Rhenish Slate Mountains

Abstract The spatial extent of metal contamination caused by small-scale ore veins is increased by periglacial solifluction. Our objectives were (1) to examine the spatial distribution of Pb in cover beds that migrated over Pb ore veins, (2) to calculate the transport distance of ore-derived Pb, and (3) to determine controls on the transport distance. We examined six transects (320–775 m long) in the Rhenish Slate Mountains in West Germany. The transects included four west-exposed and two east-exposed slopes with inclinations between 2–20°. The synthesis of SNAT2 transporters is required for the hypertonic stimulation of system A transport activity

AbstractIn cultured human fibroblasts incubated under hypertonic conditions, the stimulation of system A for neutral amino acid transport, associated to the increased expression of the mRNA for SNAT2 transporter, leads to an expanded intracellular amino acid pool and to the recovery of cell volume. A protein of nearly 60 kDa, recognized by an antiserum against SNAT2, is increased both in the pool of biotinylated membrane proteins and in the total cell lysate of hypertonically stressed cells. The increased level of SNAT2 transporters in hypertonically stressed cells is confirmed by immunocytochemistry.
