According to appraisal theories fear and anxiety are elicited by the subjective evaluation of a situation or internal state as threatening. From this perspective anxiety disorders result from maladaptive, exaggerated threat appraisals that over-estimate the threatening consequences of often innocuous stimuli and situations. Fibroblasts cultured from the skin of patients with the genetic diseases mucolipidosis I and mucolipidosis II were found deficient in a neuraminidase specific for both an α23 and and α2 6 type of neuraminosyl linkage of sialyl oligosaccharides. Obligate heterozygotes (parents) showed an intermediate activity in mucolipidosis I, but a normal one in mucolipidosis II. The neuraminidase activity of mucolipidosis I fibroblasts towards gangliosides, measured at pH 4.5 in the presence of Triton X-100, was within the range of normal controls with gangliosides Gm3 and GD3, but somewhat diminished with a bovine brain ganglioside preparation. Recently, it was suggested that melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is oxidized by activated neutrophils in a reaction most probably involving myeloperoxidase (Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. (2000) 279, 657-662). Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is the most abundant protein of neutrophils and is involved in killing invading pathogens. The readily available methylated pyrano[3,4-b]indol-3-ones 1a and 1b were hydrolyzed to furnish the 2-acetylindol-3-alkanoic acids 2 and 4. Compound 2 was easily transformed selectively to 2-acetyl-3-methylindole (3, salvadoricine). Substrate 1b reacts with molecular oxygen from the air only in the presence of a catalyst to give 2,3-diacetylindole (5) while 1a reacts with nitrosobenzene via a proposed Diels-Alder step to yield 2-acetylindole-3-carbaldehyde (6). The latter product can also be obtained in low yield from the reaction of 1a with molecular oxygen from the air.

Wormlike Polystyrene Brushes in Thin Films

Mono- and multilayer films were prepared on mica by solution casting of a high molecular weight polymacromonomer, i.e., a polymethacrylate of about 1000 repeating units each of which was substituted by a polystyrene chain with a molecular weight of about 5000 Da. The films were studied by tapping scanning force microscopy. The material showed a remarkable preference for forming well-defined monolayers of a thickness of 6.5 ± 0.2 nm consistent with the hard core diameter of the collapsed cylindrical brush molecules. Abstract High-aspect ratio porous structures with controllable pore diameters and without a stiff substrate can be fabricated using the ion track technique. Atomic layer deposition is an ideal technique for depositing thin films and functional surfaces on complicated 3D structures due to the high conformality of the films. In this work, we studied Al2O3 and TiO2 films grown by ALD on pristine polyimide (Kapton HN) membranes as well as polyimide membranes etched in sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and boric acid (BO3) solution by means of RBS, PIXE, SEM-EDX and helium ion microcopy (HIM). Wettability and compositional analysis of hydroxyapatite films modified by low and high energy ion irradiation

Abstract Hydroxyapatite-like thin films on silicon substrate were deposited using atomic layer deposition and were subjected to irradiation with Ar ions accelerated through 0.6–1.2 kV as well as 2 MeV 16 O + ions. After low energy Ar irradiation a significant reduction in contact angle was observed. However, the Ca/P atomic ratio remained unchanged. No reduction in contact angle was seen for high energy 16 O + irradiation. Atomic force microscopy showed the enhancement of floral-like pattern after low energy Ar bombardment while high energy oxygen irradiation lead to raised islands on as-deposited films.
Proton beam written hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) nanostructures for Nickel electroplating

Abstract Hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) behaves as a negative resist under MeV proton beam exposure. HSQ is a high-resolution resist suitable for production of tall ( 1.5 μ m ) high-aspect-ratio nanostructures with dimensions down to 22 nm. High-aspect-ratio HSQ structures are required in many applications, e.g. nanofluidics, biomedical research, etc. Since P-beam writing is a direct and hence slow process, it is beneficiary to fabricate a reverse image of the patterns in a metallic stamp, e.g. by Ni electroplating. Abstract Solvents such as 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) with a high capacity for donating hydrogen bonds generate solvates that enter into selective cross-coupling reactions of aryls upon oxidation. When electric current is employed for oxidation, reagent effects can be excluded and a decoupling of nucleophilicity from oxidation potential can be achieved. The addition of water or methanol to the electrolyte allows a shift of oxidation potentials in a specific range, creating suitable systems for selective anodic cross-coupling reactions.
