A new bipartite matching approach for record linkage: the case of two big Italian databases
2022
In recent years, university student mobility in Italy has worsened the north-south economic divide. Therefore, studying this phenomenon and its determinants is necessary to provide helpful information to support socio-economic policies. Thus, this paper aims at integrating two big databases about university students in Italy: the first one is provided by the Ministry of University and Research, concerning the university careers of student cohorts; the second one is provided by the AlmaLaurea consortium, concerning the university experiences of graduates and their success in the labour market. Both databases contain socio-demographic information that complements each other. The proposed meth…

Co-evolution of three mega-trends nurtures un-captured GDP – Uber's ride-sharing revolution
2016
Uber used a disruptive business model driven by digital technology to trigger a ride-sharing revolution. The institutional sources of the company’s platform ecosystem architecture were analyzed to explain this revolutionary change. Both an empirical analysis of a co-existing development trajectory with taxis and institutional enablers that helped to create Uber’s platform ecosystem were analyzed. The analysis identified a correspondence with the “two-faced” nature of ICT that nurtures un-captured GDP. This two-faced nature of ICT can be attributed to a virtuous cycle of decline in prices and an increase in the number of trips. We show that this cycle can be attributed to a self-propagating …
Multi-Skill Call Center as a Grading from “Old” Telephony
2009
We explore parallels between the older telephony switches and the multi-skill call centers. The numerical results have shown that a call center with equally distributed skills is preferable compared to traditional grading-type design. The annex contains a short version of mathematical proof on limited availability schemes design for small call flow intensity *** and for large *** . The proof explores one excellent V. Benes' paper (from Bell Labs). On its own merit, the annex could initiate new mathematical research in call center area, more by now the powerful software for numerical analysis is available. Main conclusion is the following: numerical analysis of simple multi-skill call center…
Contrasting age-specific recruitment and survival at different spatial scales: A case study with the European storm petrel
2009
Evolutionary studies on optimal decisions or conservation guidelines are often derived by generalising patterns from a single population, while inter-population variability in life-history traits is seldom considered. We investigated here how survival and recruitment probabilities changed with age at different geographical scales using the encounter histories of 5523 European storm petrels from three Mediterranean colonies, and also how our estimates of these parameters might be expected to affect population growth rates using population matrix models. We recorded similar patterns among colonies, but also important biological differences. Local survival, recruitment and breeding success inc…
Versatile optimization-based speed-up method for autofocusing in digital holographic microscopy
2021
We propose a speed-up method for the in-focus plane detection in digital holographic microscopy that can be applied to a broad class of autofocusing algorithms that involve repetitive propagation of an object wave to various axial locations to decide the in-focus position. The classical autofocusing algorithms apply a uniform search strategy, i.e., they probe multiple, uniformly distributed axial locations, which leads to heavy computational overhead. Our method substantially reduces the computational load, without sacrificing the accuracy, by skillfully selecting the next location to investigate, which results in a decreased total number of probed propagation distances. This is achieved by…

Bayesian Design of “Successful” Replications
2002
Replication of experiments is commonin applied research. However, systematic studies of the goals and motivations of a “replication” are rare. As a consequence, there does not seem to be a precise notion of what a “success” when replicating means. This article discusses some of the possible goals for replication; this leads to different (but precise) notions of “success” when replicating. Bayesian hierarchical models allow for a flexible and explicit incorporation of the assumed relationship among the experiments. Bayesian predictive distributions are a natural tool to compute the probability of the replication being successful, and hence to design the replication so that the probability of…
