Development of a Matrix-Matched Sphalerite Reference Material (MUL-ZnS-1) for Calibration of In Situ Trace Element Measurements by Laser Ablation-Ind…

2016

Sphalerite (ZnS) is an abundant ore mineral and an important carrier of elements such as Ge, Ga and In used in high-technology applications. In situ measurements of trace elements in natural sphalerite samples using LA-ICP-MS are hampered by a lack of homogenous matrix-matched sulfide reference materials available for calibration. The preparation of the MUL-ZnS1 calibration material containing the trace elements V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga, Ge, As, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Tl and Pb besides Zn, Fe and S is reported. Commercially available ZnS, FeS, CdS products were used as the major components, whereas the trace elements were added by doping with single-element ICP-MS standard solutions a…

Composition, crystallization conditions and genesis of sulfide-saturated parental melts of olivine-phyric rocks from Kamchatsky Mys (Kamchatka, Russi…

2020

Highlights • Parental melts of sulfide-bearing KM rocks have near primary MORB-like composition. • Crystallization of these S-saturated melts occurred in near-surface conditions. • Extensive fractionation and crustal assimilation are not the causes of S-saturation. • S content in melts can be restored by accounting for daughter sulfide globules. Abstract Sulfide liquids that immiscibly separate from silicate melts in different magmatic processes accumulate chalcophile metals and may represent important sources of the metals in Earth's crust for the formation of ore deposits. Sulfide phases commonly found in some primitive mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) may support the occurrence of sulfide …

Sulfide mineral identification using laser-induced plasma spectroscopy

2003

Sulfide minerals in rock samples were identified with laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS) in the near vacuum ultraviolet spectral region. Reference spectra of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, barite, calcite and dolomite were applied to classification of minerals in sulfur-bearing drill core samples. On the basis of the results mineral distributions in the sample were estimated. The potential of the LIPS method for in situ analysis is discussed.

Synthesis of substituted carbamo(dithioperoxo)thioates as potential BCA2-inhibitory anticancer agents

2015

A new, simple, one-step synthetic route to carbamo(dithioperoxo)thioates from commercially available starting materials is described. The key step of this new synthetic approach involves the tetrabromomethane-promoted reaction between secondary amines, carbon disulfide and alkyl thiols under basic conditions at room temperature. New compounds from this series selected for anticancer screening showed selective sub-micromolar activity within BCA2-expressing human breast cancer cell lines.

Synthesis of poly(disulfide)s with narrow molecular weight distributions via lactone ring-opening polymerization

2020

We report the first example of controlled polymerization of poly(disulfide)s with narrow molecular weight distributions. 1,4,5-oxadithiepan-2-one (OTP), a disulfide-containing 7-membered ring lactone, was polymerized by using the diphenylphosphate (DPP) catalyzed lactone ring-opening polymerization method. The polymerization proceeded in a living manner, and the resulting polymers displayed very narrow polydispersity index (PDI) values below 1.1 and excellent backbone degradability responding to reducing conditions and UV irradiation.

Increased sulfate availability in saline water promotes hydrogen sulfide production in fish organic waste

2020

The risk of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production can be a challenge in marine land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic gas that can cause massive fish mortality even at low concentrations, and in addition, serious odour problems in the surroundings. It is a bacterial by-product originating from the degradation of organic matter in sulfur-rich waters such as marine waters. In order to hinder H2S production in marine land-based RAS, more information on the H2S production conditions and the associated microbiology is needed. In this study, the production of H2S from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) organic waste was examined using a novel H2S measurement …

Mssbauer study of the spatial distribution of the active species in Cs doped Fe2O3-V2O5 catalysts

1995

From a Cs doped Fe2O3-V2O5 (Fe:V=1.4) catalyst exhibiting an inhomogeneous composition after calcination, three different fractions have been separated by visual inspection. One fraction has been found to consist of mainly α-Fe2O3, another one of mainly FeVO4. The third fraction (S1 in the text) is the catalytically most active fraction containing besides both of the former components an amorphous phase of FexVyOz and also the dopant. By combining the results from transmission and conversion electron Mossbauer spectra it has been concluded that the amorphous component is enriched in the surface region of the crystallites of the catalyst. In addition, the formation of a thin surface layer of…

Environmentally relevant precursors of carbonyl sulfide in aquatic systems

1997

Seawater solutions of environmentally relevant organosulfur compounds, commercial humic acid (HA), and natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) were incubated with and without UV light in order to determine the carbonyl sulfide (COS) producing capabilities of these compounds. COS dark- and photo-production rate constants were determined for dilute solutions of the organosulfur compounds (μmol l−1) and HA/DOM (mg l−1). Dissolved COS was determined using a purge and cryogenic trap method followed by GC/FPD detection. COS was produced in considerable amounts both non-photochemically and photochemically from the reduced form of free acid of glutathione (GSH) and photochemically from cysteine (CYS…
