Sulfuric acid water table caves (Grotte du Chat / Acqua Fitusa /Bad Deutsch Altenburg + Kraushöhle).
2014
Sulfuric acid caves can display a variety of forms, from 3D maze systems, to isolated chambers, and more or less maze-like water table caves. Most of the voids are normally generated at or immediately above the water table, where condensation-corrosion processes are dominant, creating a set of characteristic meso- and micromorphologies. This paper deals with the description of four very typical sulfuric acid water table caves: the Grotte du Chat in Provence (France), the Acqua Fitusa Cave in Sicily (Italy), and the Bad Deutsch Altenburg and Kraushöhle caves in Austria.
A study on the fragmentation of sulfuric acid and dimethylamine clusters inside an Atmospheric Pressure interface Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometer
2021
Abstract. Sulfuric acid and dimethylamine vapours in the atmosphere can form molecular clusters, which participate in new particle formation events. In this work, we have produced, measured and identified clusters of sulfuric acid and dimethylamine using an electrospray ionizer coupled with a planar differential mobility analyser, connected to an atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ESI–DMA–APi-TOF MS). This set-up is suitable for evaluating the extent of fragmentation of the charged clusters inside the instrument. We evaluated the fragmentation of 11 negatively charged clusters both experimentally and using a statistical model based on quantum chemical data. The…
Pretreatment of trace element-enriched biomasses grown on phytomanaged soils for bioethanol production
2017
Abstract Phytotechnologies are a set of sustainable, ecological options notably for alleviating pollutant linkages induced by contaminated soils. However, concerns exist regarding the processing of trace elements (TE)-enriched biomass and the fate of TEs in the end-products. The fractionation of phytoremediation TE-enriched non-woody lignocellulosic (tobacco) and woody (birch, willow) phytoremediation-borne biomasses was studied using ethanol organosolv, soda and dilute acid pretreatments. TE distribution in the process fractions (pulp, liquid effluents and lignin) was further examined. In dilute acid conditions, a wood pretreatment performed at 170 °C in the presence of 2% w/w of sulfuric …
Efficiency of acetic acid and formic acid as a catalyst in catalytical and mechanocatalytical pretreatment of barley straw
2016
Abstract In this study, the potential of organic acids (formic acid, acetic acid) in a catalytical and mechanocatalytic conversion of lignocellulosic barley straw to valuable sugars is explored using sulfuric acid as a reference. Acid-catalyzed hydrolysis has been carried out with acid-impregnated samples as well as unmodified barley straw. In the mechanocatalytical approach, pretreatment consists of impregnation with the acid catalyst and mechanical treatment by ball milling following chemical hydrolysis. Straw samples and residues were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) whereas hydrolysate analysis was based on total reducing sugar (TRS) determination following th…
Carbohydrates as Chemical Constituents of Biowaste Composts and their Humic and Fulvic Acids
1995
The decomposition of organic matter of source-separated biowaste during composting was followed during 18 months. Compost samples were fractionated into three parts: (i) hot water soluble extract (HWE) (ii) bitumen fraction and (iii) humic substances (humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA)). Original compost samples and the HA and FA fractions were hydrolyzed with sulfuric acid for hexoses and pentoses. Quantitative spectrophotometric and qualitative GC/MS analyses of monosaccharides as trimethylsilyl ethers of the corresponding alditols were carried out.During composting, the amount of HA in the organic matter of the compost increased, the amounts of HWE and bitumen decreased and the amoun…
Observations on the use of a sulfuric acid medium for As(V) to As(III) reduction in lodimetric titrations: Application to the determination of total …
1991
Abstract The use of a sulfuric rather than a hydrochloric acid medium for the reduction of As(V) to As(III) by iodide is proposed. Optimum conditions of acid concentration, amount of sodium hydroxide, and time and temperature are established to achieve quantitative reduction. The optimized reduction procedure was applied to the iodimetric determination of total arsenic and compared to a procedure that employs a hydrochloric acid medium. A systematic error of 0.04% was found for the method with a sulfuric acid medium opposed to 0.05% for the method with a hydrochloric acid medium in the reduction step. The proposed modified iodimetric method has been successfully used with some organic sampl…
Pretreatment and fractionation of lignocellulosic barley straw by mechanocatalysis
2017
Abstract This study focuses on the mechanocatalytical process combining dilute acid pretreatment and mechanical processing driven by ball milling. Milled and hydrolyzed barley straw samples are subject to reducing sugar analysis by DNS assay and capillary electrophoresis. Optimization of the saccharification conditions was carried out with two different sulfuric acid concentrations, 0.5 mol kg −1 and 1.0 mol kg −1 , and compared. A significant yield of total reducing sugar (53.4%) was obtained from barley straw impregnated with sulfuric acid (1.0 mol kg −1 ) after milling for only 20 min. Glucose and xylose concentrations accounted for 3.5% and 11.3%, respectively. Strikingly, the present s…
Cyclocondensation reaction of 1,2-diamino-4-methylbenzene andp-substituted acetophenones
1993
1,2-Diamino-4-methylbenzene 1 reacts in the presence of sulphuric acid with 4-substituted acetophenones 2a-e yielding 2,4-diaryl-2,3-dihydro-2,8-dimethyl-1H-1,5-benzodiazepines 3a-e and as minor component 2,4-diaryl-2,3-dihydro-2,7-dimethyl-1H-1,5-benzodiazepines 4a-e. The ratio 3:4 is in the range of 7:3. The structure determination of the regioisomers was performed by NOE measurements.
Different approaches in sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) conductivity measurements
2019
Ion conductivity of sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes with various degree of sulfonation (DS) was investigated using impedance analysis with different measuring cell configuration and ion conductivity was calculated from resistances of polymer membranes. SPEEK was synthesized from poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) via sulfonation reaction in concentrated sulfuric acid (95-98%). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of membrane surface was performed to determine possible mechanical damage to the membrane during resistance measurements.
Modified photobehavior of carboxylic acid derivatives induced by protonation
1987
Abstract A series of carboxylic acid derivatives 1–6 containing a second interacting function have been converted into the corresponding O -protonated species or acylium ions upon treatment with 96% sulfuric acid or oleum, respectively, at room temperature. The resulting stable cations have been spectroscopically characterized and submitted to irradiation. Cis-trans photoisomerization was observed in the ionic speciesderived from trans -crotonic, fumaric and maleic acids, and maleic anhydride. By contrast protonated crotonolactone 5a+ was found to be photostable. Finally, protonated α-bromobutyrolactone 6a+ was clean and efficiently dehydrohalogenated to 5a+ upon irradiation. Since the norm…
